The Michael Booker Bursary Fund “I have gained so much from BGS - great friends, confidence and a love of learning.” Year 10 Bursary Student Sumus Bristolienses You are part of the BGS heritage Supporting bright young people in every community across Bristol Since our foundation in 1532, as the city school for the sons of Bristol’s merchants and tradesmen, we have been proud to be a widely inclusive community. “I could only attend BGS due to the fact that I had an assisted place. I loved my time at BGS and am glad that my small contribution goes some way to helping children enjoy all that BGS has to offer.” Gareth Williams, OB Intellectual ability, not ability to pay, remains at the heart of BGS’s ethos When public funding through direct grants ended in 1976 we took over, using interest earned on the School’s endowment to provide assistance for bright children. The generosity of donors to our Bursary Fund has enabled us to extend this significantly. Now, nearly a tenth of our students receive some funding. “Since he started at BGS my son has grown into a mature young man, keen to rise to the challenges the School sets for him. I am delighted, and very thankful to the Michael Booker Bursary Fund for making this possible.” Father of a Year 10 bursary student We aim high at Bristol Grammar School and are proud to do so Our purpose is to provide an exceptional education for all our pupils, developing in them a spirit of enquiry and independence of thought through high-quality teaching, warm pastoral care and broad-ranging intellectual, physical and cultural opportunities. Above all, we are committed to supporting our pupils so that every one of them may achieve their goals and leave BGS as confident, compassionate and ambitious young adults. Your gift to the Michael Booker Bursary Fund will help give a young person an excellent education Large or small, every gift can help achieve something amazing. Modest sums donated monthly for several years mean we can plan ahead, confident that there will be funds to see new students through to the Sixth Form. Others may be in a position to make a larger gift and there are opportunities to endow a named bursary. We are also seeking specific 100% Sixth Form bursaries to enable students with talent in certain subjects to study at BGS to give them the best chance of achieving excellent results and entry to the best universities. “It is a very great privilege to teach the stimulating and lively-minded young people who come to BGS from such a wide variety of backgrounds.” David Selwyn, English Teacher 1975-2013 If you can help us enable more bright children to benefit from what BGS can provide, you will have given a great gift. Michael Booker taught Classics at BGS from 1938 to 1980. A very talented and popular teacher, he believed that all young people should have the best possible opportunities and his excellent coaching helped generations of children get a good start in life and make the most of their future. The Michael Booker Bursary Fund was started just over ten years ago in his memory so that former pupils, staff and friends of Bristol Grammar School could provide means-tested bursaries for bright children who would benefit from an education at BGS, but whose families lacked the means to afford it. Since then, these generous donors have: given over fifty girls and boys the gift of an exceptional education increased the financial assistance the School can provide so that we can now help over a tenth of our pupils donated over £600,000 built a group of supporters who enjoy attending events at the School and take great pride in the achievements of the children “The Bursary Fund means those who deserve to be here can make the most of the outstanding teaching and learning we provide. We are able to continue this long-standing BGS tradition – of helping so many deserving pupils – largely thanks to the support we have enjoyed from donors, great and small, down the decades. Thank you for giving them this life-changing opportunity.” Foundation Bristol Grammar School University Road, Bristol BS8 1SR 0117 933 9637 [email protected] www.bristolgrammarschool.co.uk Bristol Grammar School: a company limited by guarantee.
