Dear Alumni and Friends,
Step back into an era of mythological gods and goddesses, of storied kings and emperors, of illustrious
heroes and philosophers. Walk through the wonders of glorious civilizations, today archaeological sites
of treasured antiquities. Simply enjoy the unsurpassed beauty of the vivid azure Aegean Sea as you sail
from port to port across the fabled waters of Homer’s epics The Iliad and The Odyssey and follow in
the footsteps of Philip of Macedonia, his ambitious son Alexander the Great and St. Paul—three of the
most tectonic figures of the ancient world. Experience the best this coastal region has to offer those who
seek to understand the glory and origin of human civilization—its past, present and future.
Join us on this extraordinary, one-of-a-kind odyssey to the cradle of civilization, from
Thessaloniki to Athens, Greece, visiting rare jewels of the ancient Aegean coast at this
ideal, pleasantly warm time of year. Cruise aboard the exclusively chartered small ship
M.Y. VARIETY VOYAGER, accommodating only 60 passengers and able to sail into small ports
inaccessible to larger vessels, a great advantage to visiting these stunning wonders of antiquity
seldom seen by North American travellers.
Our unique itinerary features up to eight tremendous UNESCO World Heritage cultural
landmark sites and places that most only read about. See the classical ruins of Pergamon, the
sophisticated capital of the Attalid dynasty established by the conquests of Alexander the Great.
Visit Philippi, the ancient citadel fortified by Philip of Macedonia in 356 B.C. and, hundreds of years
later, the first European city in which St. Paul preached. Explore the 10th-century hill-top monastery
dedicated to St. John and the cave where the apostle was said to have divined the apocalypse, both
UNESCO World Heritage sites on the unspoilt island of Pátmos. Ascend to the astounding UNESCO
World Heritage site of Meteora, nearly inaccessible 14th- and 15th-century monasteries “suspended
in the air”; and envision the lives of the Roman Empire’s most prominent citizens in the wonderfully
preserved mosaic-laden chambers of the often-overlooked Terrace Houses of Ephesus, along with the
city’s iconic Library of Celsus. Meanwhile an onboard expert study leader will enhance your experience
of these enigmatic destinations.
This is an exceptional value and is a wonderfully comprehensive
itinerary in this stunning area of the world. Given the highly exclusive nature of
this cruise, space is extremely limited and sure to sell quickly. I encourage
you to reserve now for this odyssey, an epic journey which will
provide, as it did for Odysseus, amazing experiences to recall back
at home.
Sincerely,
Melana Soroka

Philip of Macedonia and Alexander the Great built and expanded
their empires and St. Paul preached his teachings. The well-preserved ruins of
venerable palaces, basilicas and forums; magnificent sites of early Christian

Hellenistic and Roman civilizations made to establish our modern way of living.
This odyssey explores the rare gems of the Aegean coast, unparalleled in both
beauty and in great antiquities—a voyage through the glorious past of Western
civilization in the paths of three great men and more.
Thessaloniki, Greece
Named after Philip of Macedonia’s
daughter, the bustling metropolis of
Thessaloniki is the second largest
city in Greece. Visit the Church of
Agios Dimitrios, a glorious, five-aisled
basilica that is one of the most
important monuments of the early
Christian era and a UNESCO World
Heritage site, and see the 16th-century
White Tower, iconic symbol of the city.

sandstone pinnacles formed during
the Tertiary period, 24 holy Orthodox
monasteries were built in the 14th and
15th centuries, some of which continued
their traditions uninterrupted for
hundreds of years. Originally, the only
access to these lofty monasteries was by
way of very long ladders and baskets
suspended on ropes. Today, you will
ascend to them by coach on roads built
along the sandstone slopes overlooking
verdant Peneas Valley. Four of the
monasteries still house active religious

Kavala/Philippi/Lydia
In the picturesque port of Kavala, see the
15th-century Panagia Castle, built on the
former site of the Byzantine acropolis;
the medieval Old City Walls; and
the Kamares, a well-preserved
16th-century aqueduct constructed by
Süleyman the Magnificent. Nearby, visit
the ancient city of Philippi, named
after Philip of Macedonia, father of
Alexander the Great, and one of the
most important cities during the Roman,
Christian, Byzantine and Ottoman eras.
About 40 B.C. the Battle of Philippi took
place here between the Roman armies of
Brutus and Octavian, bringing about the
end of the Roman democracy. A century
later, Philippi was the first European
city in which St. Paul preached, and
it was here where he was imprisoned.
See the remains of his holding cell and
walk along the original Roman road,
Via Egnatia.
Outside Philippi, along the banks
of the Gangites River, visit the Greek
Orthodox Baptistery of St. Lydia,
where St. Paul baptized the first
European converted to Christianity.
Inside, see the splendid mosaics depicting
the travels of St. Paul.

EXTENDED SEVEN-NIGHT CRUISE OPTION
Pergamon, Turkey
The UNESCO World Heritage site
of Pergamon is one of Turkey’s finest
classical ruins. Visit the Acropolis, one of
the great centres of Hellenism, where the
monumental Library of Pergamon once
stood in the second century B.C. With over
200,000 manuscripts, the library rivaled
its counterpart in Alexandria as the
centre of ancient scholarship. Nearby, see
the foundations of the sanctuaries
of Zeus and Athena; the magnificent
theatre, where audiences once viewed
The picturesque seaside town of Kavala, Greece,
served as the main port for the ancient city of Philippi.
St. John the Apostle wrote the Book of Revelation in the
alypse on the Greek island of Pátmos.
the plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles;
and the partially reconstructed marble
Temple of Trajan. Descend to the lower
town and visit the Asclepion, a shrine
dedicated to the Greco-Roman god of
healing; in ancient times, this sanctuary
drew health-seekers from all the lands of
the eastern Mediterranean.
Pythagoreion, Greece
The ancient and classical Greek capital of
Samos, Pythagoreion today is a UNESCO
World Heritage site and picturesque
port city. In 535 B.C. Pythagoreion was
seized by the tyrant Polyerates, whose
rule produced what the Greek historian
Herodotus described as “the greatest
building and engineering feats in the
Greek world.” Among these is the World
Heritage site of Heraion, or the Temple of
Hera, the largest temple ever built in Greece
and the first Greek temple to be completely
surrounded by a peristyle of columns.
Ephesus, Turkey
The Greco-Roman city of Ephesus,
liberated from Persian rule by Alexander the
Great in 334 B.C., is one of the world’s
most remarkable architectural treasures,
offering an enthralling glimpse into ancient
coastal life. The beautifully restored façade
of the Library of Celsus is awe-inspiring,
and the Marble Way leads to an impressive
24,000-seat amphitheatre where St. Paul
delivered his Epistle to the Ephesians.
According to legend, St. John the Apostle
travelled with Mary, the mother of Jesus, to
Ephesus, where he wrote his Gospel of John
and later died and was buried.
By special arrangement, visit the
Terrace Houses, where the most
prominent families of first-century Ephesus
once lived. Admire the monumental arched
colonnades, well-preserved mosaics and
brightly coulored frescoes of these superbly
crafted residences, rarely seen by today’s
visitors to Ephesus.
Ku¸sadasi
First inhabited around 3000 B.C. and
later fortified with an island citadel
during the Ottoman Empire, Ku¸sadasi
is today a cosmopolitan resort town
offering sparkling beaches and unique
shopping opportunities.
Pátmos, Greece
The small island of Pátmos and its Greek
Orthodox Monastery of St. John, a
UNESCO World Heritage site, loom large
in the history of Christianity. Built in
1088, the monastery is still inhabited
today by monks who continue to preserve
it as a pilgrimage site and place of
religious study. St. John the Apostle of
Ephesus very possibly wrote the Book of
Revelation on this island in A.D. 95.
Athens
Birthplace of democracy and home to
many of history’s greatest philosophers and
poets from Socrates to Herodotus, Athens
is unmatched in its contributions to early
Western civilization. Today, the ancient
city’s grandeur endures in the spectacular
Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site,
and the perfectly proportioned Parthenon,
a flawless example of Doric architecture
dedicated to the goddess Athena in 438 B.C.
Built into a naturally steep hillside, the spectacular Hellenistic theatre of the Pergamon Acropolis in
Turkey was built with 80 rows of seating that could accommodate up to 10,000 people.
