DISCLAIMER
This is a list of the dinnerware tested by KUTV and Kenyon
Consulting, Inc. on November 16, 2007. The tests were done using an XRay Fluorescence Analyzer (XRF Gun). The device can be used to
determine if there is a measurable amount of lead in an item. Any reading
above a 1.0 on the XRF Gun is considered unacceptable by the Division of
Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA). Neither of these agencies regulates the import of dinnerware into the
United States. That falls under the control of the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). The FDA states that all imported dinnerware is
within established standards. There are no regulations that require a
manufacturer or retailer to disclose the existence of lead in your dinnerware
if the level is within these standards. The levels found in our tests show a
varying amount of lead exists in different plates, but the XRF Gun
CANNOT measure the potential for lead leaching from your plates into
food.
This listing of information confirms ONLY what was found in the
physical dinnerware that was tested. This does not demonstrate that the same
dinnerware or design in your home may or may not contain lead. Due to
dinnerware being manufactured in different factories at various times, there
is a likelihood that a particular plate design that tested negative for lead for
us may actually test positive at another time. In short, if you hold plates that
are the same as what is listed here, you should not assume that your plate
would have the exact same result if tested for lead.
If you wish to have your dinnerware tested for lead, you have a few options.
You may contact your local health department and ask if they have
information on any “Environmental Consulting” company in your area that
uses an XRF Gun. Or you can contact DataChem Labs to do a lead leach
test. The test is established by the FDA, and the level of compliance is 2.0
parts per million.

Commonly asked questions:
What plates should I buy?
We cannot answer that. All we can tell you is that as an observation
from our tests, certain brands listed below in green tested with no
measurable lead.
As a personal observation, dishes that contained colorful designs (IE:
Christmas themes, fruit patterns, farm scenes, etc) tended to test
positive for containing lead.
How many plates did you test?
More than 1,500.
How many plates that you tested had lead?
About 30 percent; or 3 of every 10.
Were most of the plates with lead from China?
Not according to our results. Though many did come from China,
some of the worst offenders came from European countries and even
right here in the United States.
What dishes tested the worst?
As you might imagine, lead crystal goblets and plates all tested
positive with VERY high levels of lead.
As a personal observation, dishes that contained colorful designs (IE:
Christmas themes, fruit patterns, farm scenes, etc) tended to test
positive for containing lead.
Also as a personal observation, the older the dish the more likely it
was to have a higher level or lead…however that did not, in any way,
exempt new dishes from containing lead.
Below is a partial list of the plates we tested on Friday, November 17, 2007.
It is only partial because we have disregarded plates that did not have any
identification stamp on them.
Brands in which we tested 3 or more plates, and they all tested POSITIVE
for containing lead, are highlighted in RED
Brands in which we tested 3 or more, and some contained lead and some did
not, are highlighted in YELLOW.
Brands in which we tested 3 or more plates, and they all tested NEGATIVE
for containing lead, are highlighted in GREEN.
You will notice a vast array of miscellaneous brands and descriptions in this
list. Wherever possible, we gathered information from the back of plates
tested, and printed it as seen. Many plates did not include brand names or
styles. What you see is the information provided.
