The spring semester is underway and we are looking forward to the start of our bonds projects on campus. With the start of the band room anticipated to take place this summer, we can now focus on getting our final touches on the stadium redesign project. The School Board will review the plans and timelines with anticipated approval of the design to occur next fall. It would be exciting to be on campus while two major construction projects are being completed at the same time. I am aware that the Alumni Association is interested in improving the appearance of the campus so I am happy to announce that we are working on a project with the County Water Board on a DROPS program initiative. This grant will address four areas on campus that have high water retention and create bioswales to alleviate the standing water and run off. We are excited to have our Eco Action Class partner with DROPS to improve the campus plant. I also would like to announce that we have released our honor roll and 491 students have accumulated a 3.5 GPA or higher with special commendations to the 231 students who have a 4.0 or better. It is great to be a Tiger academically and athletically. ANALY ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Two years of organizing and planning culminated in a perfect 2 day event when the Analy Athletic Hall of Fame held their first induction event on October 18, 2014. The first class of inductees were selected for their contributions to Analy High School athletics either through their outstanding athletic abilities, coaching or community involvement. The first group included: Wilburn Talbot (1925) - the only State track champion ever to have run for the Tigers, winning the 1924 title in the 440 (51.4). Walt Foster (1931) - outstanding contribution both as a 3 sport athlete while at Analy and also for his coaching acronym in his 30 years at Analy. Louis (Chub) Blank (1934) - outstanding 4 sport athlete who contributed back to the local athletic community as a coach for several different sports. 1958 Football Team - The first and only undefeated team for over 50 years, this group took the Analy football program to a new level of excellence. Rick Mohr (1977) - transferring in his junior year, Rick immediately made a mark on both the football and baseball team before giving up baseball for track where he made it to the State track meet in the shot put. Played in the Canadian Football League after a successful football and track career at UC Davis. Jenny OLeary (1996) - a talented 3 sport athlete, Jenny took the playing fields and court at Analy by storm beginning in her Freshman year. A 2 time Athlete of the Year, 4 time All-Empire and All-League player in softballl along with a 3 time All League volleyball player, Jenny went on to play softball at Sac State. The inductees were introduced at half time of the Varsity football, and then were honored by over 200 friends, family and fans at a banquet held at the Foxtail Golf Course. The Analy Athletic Hall of Fame committee would welcome nominations of former players, coaches or community members that you feel are deserving of this honor. We would welcome additions to our committee. Please contact Linda Tighe Helton at [email protected] with you nominations. Plans for new Analy Band Room submitted to Sacramento The design plans for the new Analy Band Room have now been submitted for approval by the Division of State Architect (DSA) in Sacramento. DSA must approve the plans before construction can begin. If approval from Sacramento goes smoothly, well demolish the old classroom building on the lawn between the auditorium and High School Road this summer and break ground for the new building this summer, so that all the Analy bands will have a new home in fall 2016! Karlson Field Project Is Moving Forward The WSCUHSD School Board is scheduled to have a final review of the plans for new home bleachers, press box, lights, track, and synthetic turf on Karlson Field at the School Board meeting on Wed., Feb. 18 at 7:00 at the El Molino library. The plans will then be submitted to the state architect office in Sacramento for their approval. The School Board is faced with a difficult decision regarding when to build this project. If we break ground right after the July 3 community fireworks on July 3, the project may be less expensive and should be completed by December 2015. But this will mean having to hold fall sports off campus. If we break ground in spring 2016, the cost may increase and the field may not be ready by graduation for the Class of 2016. Whichever timeline is decided, Karlson Field should have a whole new look for fall 2017! Analy Bands Perform for Local Middle Schools The Analy Honor Band, Jazz Band and Full Orchestra will take a full school day on Monday, February 23 to visit and perform at Twin Hills, Brook Haven and Hillcrest Middle Schools to promote the AHS instrumental music program.Ê This is an exciting visit for the middle school students, and for the Analy students returning to their former haunts. It takes two large buses and a big truck to move the bands from school to school on this tour. The Analy music program is recognized for excellence across Northern California! Students Report on Analy Solar Power Production Students from the Analy Advanced Placement Environmental Science class recently presented a report to the WSCUHSD School Board on the amount of power produced by the Analy solar power project. The students compared the predicted electricity production with the actual amount of energy produced, and found that the project actually yielded more electricity than expected, based on the production ratings of the solar panels and recent weather patterns. Analy students will continue to monitor and report on the solar power production, in order to encourage energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. ~Keller McDonald, Superintendent 15th ANNUAL ANALY TIGER GOLF CLASSIC Dust off those clubs and call an old friend from high school! Its always a great day to be a tiger! ~Loretta Castleberry, Alumni Association President FROM ANALY SKITS TO HOLLYWOOD SHOWS My name is Matt Nix, and Im a TV Showrunner. In case youve never heard the term, it basically means head writer/producer/director on a TV show. Im best known for a show called Burn Notice, which ran for seven years on the USA Network, and for a show The Good Guys which ran for 20 episodes on Fox. I currently work on two shows, one called Complications, which will be out this summer on USA, and another called The Comedians, which will be out in Spring on FX. It would take a while to describe exactly what I do, but here are the basics: I hire the team that writes the show, and then either write, rewrite, or supervise each episode. Im the head creative producer, so I choose actors, hire directors, edit the show, and deal with budget and personnel issues. And I also either direct episodes myself or work with directors on how we want the show to look and feel. Its a ton of work, but its really fun. As part of my job, I get to do all kinds of things. For research, Ive hung out with all sorts of interesting people from detectives to soliders to doctors to CIA officers. Ive been able to work with a lot of my favorite actors. And I get to play with really big toys onscreen, doing car chases, throwing people off buildings, and of course blowing up pretty much everything you can think of with high explosives. Looking back, my experience at Analy was a HUGE part of what I get to do today although in a completely unexpected way. I was a pretty serious student, and I always thought Id be a doctor, a lawyer, something like that. But while I was in school, I always kept one hand in what I really loved to do. I acted in plays with Ms. Glazer and Mr. Craven. I took ROP Video with Mr. Davis. I wrote for the newspaper with Mr. Rose and geeked out on science with Mr. Goldberg. And more than anything, I hung out with a bunch of friends who liked to make stuff together movies, rally skits, etc. I thought these were all just hobbies. I was wrong. I went off to UCLA, thinking Id go to law school but when it was time to apply, I couldnt. When I thought about what I wanted to do, my dream was pretty lame: I wanna go back to High School and mess around making stuff with my friends. Since that wasnt an option, I did the next best thing: returned to LA to work in the entertainment industry. It was a long road. I worked for agents and executives. I taught myself to write screenplays. Slowly but surely, I built a career. Writing little movie scripts for studios turned into writing bigger ones. Eventually I got a shot in TV, and pitched and sold a show that turned into Burn Notice. From there, Ive been able to sell and run other shows. And over the years, its been great how many opportunities Ive had to return to my roots. My first writing and directing partner was my best friend from Analy. Ive hired friends I met in high school as actors. A friend from Analy is on my digital effects crew. This year, I hired a recent Analy grad in the camera department of my new show. Ive even written the school into scripts the character of Sam Axe on Burn Notice was a Tiger and talks about it in a couple of episodes. Im deeply grateful to Analy High for being a place where I could discover what I loved to do even if I didnt know that at the time. So for all of you who ever dreamed of spending your life engrossed in your hobbies and messing around with your high school friends? go for it. Its worked out pretty well for me. 15 TH ANNUAL ANALY TIGERS GOLF CLASSIC Friday, May 1st, 2015 Windsor Golf Club S ZE I R P T GREA Tee Prizes *Field Limited to First 120 Golfers* 18 Holes of Golf-Range Balls-Golf Cart Snacks-Refreshments-Dinner Team Prizes for Low Gross and Low Net Live Auction Raffle Prizes Putting Contest S C H E D U L E Time Event Hole in One and Long Drive Prizes 12:00 pm.
