New RDO office building not inaugurated due
to court case
By Our Staff Reporter
The new bulding constructed to house the offices of Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO),
Ambattur, and Tahsidar, Ambattur, on Ambattur Estate Road at its junction with Park Road
and Padi Kuppam Road, has not been inaugurated for several months due to a case pending
in the court.
Many decades back, TNHB acquired the land and kept it under its control for future
development.
But a litigant has filed a case against TNHB to prevent the inauguration of the building
as the land acquired by it was supposed to be for layout of plots to be allotted/sold.

Corporation collects Rs. 580-crore property tax
By Our Staff Reporter
Chennai Corporation has
collected property tax to the
tune of Rs. 580 crores, this
(2014-15) financial year, a
record, as against Rs. 461
crores for 2012-13 and Rs. 480
crores for 2013-14.
A senior official told media
personnel that this was
possible due to extensive
ground work such as fixing
bugs in the online tax collection facility, setting up
collection centers at banks
and special property tax
drives in different parts of the
city.
The ‘name and shame’ policy
recently adopted by the civic
body has also yielded good
results as the majority of
defaulters deposited their
tax soon after their names
were made available to the
public.
Still, the Corporation neither penalizes defauters nor
gives incentives to those
making advance payments,
which are regular practices of
several other civic bodies
across the country.
Despite a law stipulating
that the property tax be
revised once every five years,
the Corporation has not
revised it since 1998 due to
political pressures.

She was 70 and had been a resident of
Anna Nagar for more than 25 years.
She is survived her husband
Ananthakrishnan (retired from Central
Bank of India), daughter and a
granddaughter.
M. KANDASWAMI
M. Kandaswami (resident of AK 49,
Anna Nagar) passed away on March 29.
He was 89 and had been a resident of
Anna Nagar for more than 40 years.
He had retired as Deputy Collector. He
was also Founder Secretary of Anna
Nagar Welfare Association. He was a
social activist and had been closely
associated with organizations like Anna Nagar Tamil Sangam,
T.N. Senior Citizens’ Association, Anti-Corruption Movement,
Pensioners’ Association and Indian Inst. of Public
Administration. He had been Trustee of Anna Nagar
Manavalakkalai Manram and Vice President of World
Community Service Centre. His eyes were donated as per his
wishes.
He is survived by daughter Dr. M. Kalanidhi, sons
Karunanidhi, Dayanidhi and Kirubanidhi and grandchildren.
Anna Hazare, a retired military driver, landed on an
ambitious, young Revenue Service Officer and
proclaimed to the Delhi commoner that India would be
flooded with honey and milk if the angry young men
itching to serve them, as good old Gandhi intended selflessly and with love based on Gandhian ideals were given a chance.
Anything new shines and, before Delhi’s riffraff and
similar floaters could indulge in the heavy brainwork of
thinking, the good old organising cronies jumped the
electoral gun and squashed the bad old Delhi
Government, aided and abetted by a few smooth talking
lawyers who could not divine the depth and thickness of
Kejriwal’s philosophy that promised a new life in old
Delhi, based on the acronymous amalgam of the
continued efforts of the main proponents.
The novice politicians ran too fast and stumbled,
bringing down the jerky government to dust. Kejri had
a siesta in his inaugural dharna to show the Delhiites
that he did not mind losing sleep if it would help the
dear voter. He lost sleep and in return gained sympathy,
a sore throat and a head cold which he kept under wraps
with his now famous muffler. This perhaps came in
handy when he had to answer uncomfortable questions
about unkept electoral promises; all he had to do was to
have a coughing fit and hand over the mike baton to his
hapless spokespersons at press conferences. And, after
49 days, his fledgling government folded up.
With a disastrous Lok Sabha electoral drubbing,
contesting which many termed as premature overreach
by the newbie party, it seemed as though they were
disintegrating. But it looks like people still want to
believe when promised the moon, perhaps inspired by
Radhakrishnan having sent his satellite even further
to Mars. Kejri worshippers were willing to swallow the
Delhi bait a second time and, like a gambler, our friend
told his doubting pals that they could go to hell but that
he would thrash the enemies single handedly.
His second coming, though great and grand, fell afoul
soon thereafter with sting operations by former friends
now turned foes, allegations and counter allegations,
culminating in the grand finale of Prashanth Bhushan
and Yogendra Yadav being shown the door while
Kejriwal sought refuge in naturopathy which seems to
have allegedly lessened his bark though it seems not his
bite. He chewed up his former friends on tape using
unparliamentary language. Is the Aam Aadmi Party
fast becoming a Harm Aadmi Party? Too bad!

The government library on

It was founded by neighbourhood residents in 1994

allegedly sold the cars through Senthilkumar of
Palayamkottai. On a complaint from the owner, Madan was
arrested. Senthil is absconding and the cars are yet to be
traced. The case is being investigated by Syed Jamal (Inspector, T.P. Chatram Police).

TAMIL CINEMA 75 A LOOK BACK
Police to file FIR against
unauthorized hoardings
By RANDOR GUY
TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 51
‘Kalamegam’ remains an oddity, a paragraph in the history
of Tamil cinema, a movie in which a master of Carnatic music
faced a movie camera with much hope and no success. Sadly,
no print of this rare historic movie exists. Only some aging
stills and fading memories linger .…
M. K. THYAGARAJA BHAGAVATHAR
He was the first Super Star of South Indian cinema. His
incredible following was not only among the masses but also
among the classes. A great favourite among the women, he
was perhaps the first film actor to achieve such popularity
with a mere fistful of films. Between 1934 and 1944, he was
the most sought after personality in the fields of fine arts,
music and cinema in south India. His films usually ran for
months and years, and one film ‘Haridas’ (1944) established
a stunning record by running uninterruptedly for 114 weeks
in Broadway Cinema, Madras. This is a record untouched to
this day, more than half-a-century later. This movie witnessed
three Deepawali festivals in 1944, 1945 and 1946. Responsible
for this success was the matinee idol of his day M. K.
Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. He was no great actor, but he was
an excellent musician and a singer with a rich and honeydewed melodious voice.
A handsome man with great charisma, Thyagaraja
Bhagavathar became a household name in South India and
is still fondly remembered even after half century and more
since his demise in 1959.
To this day, he has fans not only in South India but also
around the world wherever Tamilians and Tamil- speaking
folks live like Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, USA.
Australia, England, France, Germany and others. His films
‘Chintamani’ (1937), ‘Ambikapathi’ (1937), ‘Thiruneelakantar’
(1940), ‘Ashok Kumar’ (1941), ‘Sivakavi’ (1943) and ‘Haridas’
(1944) are unforgettable.
A Bhagavathar film meant several songs rendered by him,
many of which have become immortal melodies. During his
heyday, he was a cult figure, hailed by many as the
reincarnation of Goddess Saraswathi.
Before he conquered the world of cinema, he was a leading
stage star over whom men and women went gaga. His stage
plays like ‘Pavalakodi’, were enormous hits not only in South
India but in Ceylon and Burma as well.
Mayavaram Krishnamurthy Thyagarajan was born in 1910
into a family of struggling goldsmiths in Trichinopoly. His
father, Krishnamurthy Achari, earned hardly enough to
make both ends meet. In spite of his poverty, he sent his son
Thyagarajan to school, but the boy showed little interest in
studies. He was more involved in music and singing in which
he revealed astonishing talent in spite of lack of proper
training.
Krishnamurthy pulled his son out of school and got him to
work in his workshop. The father was surprised to see crowds
flocking to the workshop and his surprise grew greater when
he found that the crowd was not of customers but people who
had come to listen to young Thyagarajan singing!
He thereupon decided to make his son a stage actor and
took him to the noted talent scout, impresario and theatre
personality of Trichy, F.G. Natesa Iyer, a senior railway
official who had his own amateur troupe. It was a time when
Tamil Theatre was under the influence of the ‘Boys’ Company
Movement.
Thyagarajan made his debut as Lohidasa in ‘Harishchandra’
and at once created telling impact with his vibrant voice.
Indeed, his performance so moved the audience that many
abused the stage parents Harishchandra and Chandramathi
for causing Lohidasa so much grief! Some in the audience
threatened to beat up the concerned actors after the show!
Many threw coins on stage when he sang the sorrow-tinged
songs.
Recognizing his son’s talents, Krishnamurthy Achari now
arranged for Thyagarajan to undergo proper training in
classical Carnatic music. Thyagarajan received such training
under leading musicians like Namakkal Raghava Ayyangar.
One of his gurus felt that his precocious pupil was now a
master of music and bestowed on him the honorific
‘Bhagavathar’. And Thyagarajan came to be known henceforth
as M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar.
(A ‘bhagavathar’ is an expert in music and musical
entertainment.)
(To be continued)
Despite an earlier ban by
Madras High Court, hoardings
and digital banners continue
to be exhibited in Anna Nagar
neighbourhood on JJ Nagar
West Main Road (in front of
the bus terminus), and the
junction of Ambattur Estate
Road and East Main Road.
A monitoring committee
formed as directed by the court
has asked all government
officials to comply with the
court’s orders of regulating
and preventing unauthorized
flex boards, hoardings and
digital banners. The police
have also been asked to
register FIRs in case of
violations.

Held for ‘black note’ scam
By Our Staff Reporter
R. Vignesh (24), a resident of Shanthi Colony, Anna Nagar,
and a final year B. Tech student, and six others were arrested
by the police on March 31 in connection with a black note scam,
also called ‘wash wash scam’, in which they allegedly cheated
others of lakhs of rupees.
According to the police, operators of the black note scam
would convince their victims that they have won a large
amount of money in an online lottery which has been shipped
to them as black notes to escape customs and enforcement
officials.
The operators would sell the bundles of black notes which
contain a few genuine notes and a bottle of a solution to convert
the black notes into normal ones, for a huge amount to their
victims. The victims would later on realize that they had been
cheated.
The kingpin of the scam is a Nigerian, John Jeffry Maris, who
had a website to lure potential operators with the promise of
making them rich in a short time.
