Opening Night Film | The Rewrite
ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE KEY AUDITORIUM | 7:00 PM
Once upon a time, Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant — About a Boy, Love Actually) was an award-winning
Hollywood screenwriter, but divorce and a string of unsuccessful films have left him with nothing but
bad debts and blank pages. So when his agent arranges a job as guest screenwriting professor at a
remote university in upstate New York, a desperate Keith can’t say no. Initially hoping to give minimal
effort to actual teaching so he can focus on his next script, Keith unexpectedly finds himself becoming
invested in his student’s lives, including Holly (Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler), a single mom looking to
start her own new chapter. THE REWRITE features an all-star cast, including J.K. Simmons (Whiplash),
Allison Janney (American Beauty), Chris Elliott (Groundhog Day) and Bella Heathcote (Pride and
Prejudice and Zombies). Director Marc Lawrence’s other achievements include Two Weeks Notice and

Panel | Film Fatales Present: Female Vision
ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE, CONVERSATION ROOM | SATURDAY, 3/28 | 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
When a filmmaker shows up to a table read, a lit set, or an edit suite, they bring with them their own
life experiences and distinct perspective. How does gender influence this approach to storytelling?
From camera angles to business collaboration, is there really such a thing as distinct “female vision”?
And what could be gained culturally by bringing more of it to today’s cinematic landscape?
Panel | Movie Critics: What Were They Thinking?
ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE, CONVERSATION ROOM | SATURDAY, 3/28 | NOON – 1:00 PM
Movie critics have long been loved or hated for what they say about films. By what rubric do they judge
art and how much is personal taste? These well-known film critics take us through their process and
then face off with the audience. Here’s a chance to play hardball with a few of the top dogs in the
industry. Hear from film critic and producer David D’Arcy, New York Daily News Chief Film Critic Joe
Neumaier, and Ann Hornaday, Chief Film Critic for The Washington Post.

At first glance, Lyndon Johnson was a Texan who

different story when he dared to champion two laws
that changed America and the world — the Civil

Now, 50 years later, a new film sheds light on the

Come behind the scenes of one of today’s most popular themes in film: the true story. Take a
hard look at the realities of turning a true story into a narrative or documentary feature. For the
narrative, what are the challenges of mixing fact and fiction? For the documentary, how hard is
it to stay factual yet compelling; cinematic, but real? How do you manage the emotions and
expectations of a film’s subject?

How do you successfully distribute your film on the web today and can you make money on it?
Filmmakers and hobbyists alike discover working models championed by those who have done it.
Explore and discuss new distribution platforms that defy the conventional distribution model of
festival-to-theatrical-to-broadcast-to-VOD/website release. Learn how building your audience along
the way and engaging them in the process can be your key to success. If you release your film on the
web does it inhibit your chances for press and reviews, theatrical release, or festival inclusion?
Let the experts put you ahead of the game.
