The mission of Ann Arbor Academy is to allow students
with divergent learning styles to flourish in an
environment which promotes social and academic
confidence and growth.

Hello and welcome to this wonderful event! Speaking on behalf of
the entire Ann Arbor Academy community, we are so glad you're
here, and have chosen to be a part of a school that truly changes
lives each day. The purpose of this auction is to raise funds to
help students who cannot afford the cost of full tuition to attend
Ann Arbor Academy, and your presence here, and your donations,
are helping to change the lives of more students each year.
A recent study indicated that just over half of the high school
students in Michigan diagnosed with a disability graduate from
high school with a diploma. Ann Arbor Academy gives only
diplomas, and our graduation rate is one hundred percent. We
cannot let our youth who do not fit into the categories or norms
proscribed for them by the prevailing educational model to fall
through the cracks, or to be considered second class citizens in
any way. However, too often this is the message that is clearly
sent to young people with learning differences and disabilities, and
our children are smart – they hear this message and, unless it is
actively countered and comprehensively addressed, they too often
internalize it.
The power of Ann Arbor Academy is that, from the beginning,
students with all manner of diverse learning and social strengths
and weaknesses have been accepted and celebrated. Different is
good, and although some things may be harder for our students,
there are many things they do better than anyone else. Instead of
being compared to a standardized norm, they are recognized for
the individuals they are, with their own unique path to success. In
my time at Ann Arbor Academy, the educational establishment has
moved toward standardization, not away from it. At Ann Arbor
Academy, however, we remain committed to the child as an
individual, and to celebrating what each student brings to our
community table.
What we do at Ann Arbor Academy can only be accomplished
within the framework of an independent school. We have the
ability to be flexible, move with students at their own pace, and
stay out of the world of standardization. Everything at the
Academy flows out of our ability to be child centered, and to not
have to treat children as products on an assembly line. However,
Ann Arbor Academy
an independent school costs money, and while it's well worth it,
not everyone can afford to pay what it costs to send their child to
Ann Arbor Academy. The contributions we receive today go
directly to the school fund which allows us to provide scholarships
for as many students as possible.
This auction, which is so vital to so many of our families, wouldn't
exist without the hard work and dedication of the parent volunteers
who have organized it. In particular, I'd like to recognize Becky
Hankin, who has been at the helm of this amazing event for many
years. We are very grateful, and I am so moved by the generosity
and love that Becky and many other members of our school
community show to the school every day.

This year's theme, “Made in Michigan,” has allowed us to highlight
the wonderful products and services we have in this state. Please

membership share in the Honest Eats Farm LLC Summer

Baird Carillon Private Tour
Ann Arbor Academy
Carillonneur Kipp Cortez will conduct a private tour of the
Charles Baird Carillon in the Burton Tower on the central
campus of the University of Michigan. The Baird Carillon
is the third heaviest in the world, containing 53 bells cast
in 1936 and 1975 in England. This unique tour includes a
trip to the bell chamber where the instrument is played, a
history of the carillon and demonstration of how it works,
and an opportunity to play it. Weather permitting, visitors
can enjoy a splendid view of the area from the observation
deck.
