2,000 children had the chance to meet reenactors who were on hand to showcase camp
life, village life, health care, cooking and to
recreate actual skirmishes between Union
and Confederate forces. Infantry, cavalry

On Friday, May 1, 2015, rain or

educational venue for hundreds of school
children from this region. On Saturday, May
2rd and Sunday, May 3th, the park is open
to the public to visit Union, Confederate,

participate in photo ops with General Robert

reenactments, and more. Make a point to
come and experience this for yourself.

On March 18, 2015, the Center Unified
School District Board of Trustees held a
scholarship award ceremony during the Board
of Trustees meeting, honoring local Center
High School student Stephanie Fidomski.
The CFW Foundation has been established
by Caldwell Flores Winters, Inc. to provide
scholarships to graduating California high
school students to pursue their post-secondary
education. The scholarship program provides
opportunities for graduating California high
school students to apply for assistance to
attend four year colleges, technical schools,
and community colleges that provide programs
in their area.
The CFW Foundation has committed
to $500,000 in scholarship awards over time.
Approximately $400,000 has been awarded
over the last 8 years to 208 high school students
across California. This 2015 award cycle will
provide a total of $50,000 in scholarships to
26 high school students. Scholarship awards
range from $1,000 to $5,000 per student.
Stephanie Fidomski is a senior at Center
High School. Stephanie plans to attend
California State University of Sacramento to
pursue a career in law enforcement.
Superintendent Scott Loehr notes: “I
believe that Stephanie will be an incredible
success story and be the first in her family
to earn a college degree. I am proud of
her accomplishments and pleased with
the opportunity the CFW Foundation has
provided”.

Center Joint Unified School District
BY SCOTT A. LOEHR, Superintendent
As we continue with the
implementation of the CJUSD Local
Control Accountability Plan (LCAP),
I am proud to share that we are making
significant progress in attaining the
goals we have established. Through
the annual update process, will look
at data, review the progress our
Mr.
district has made and revise goals as
needed to meet the educational needs
of our students. Annual update discussions
with all stakeholders will happen throughout
the district in March and April. I look forward
to your input throughout the development of
our LCAP.
Updating technology throughout the
district has been of high priority to stay up to
date with innovative teaching practices and
provide the necessary tools for students to be
successful on the upcoming computer-adaptive
Smarter Balanced Assessment. You may be
wondering what it means to be computer
adaptive. In a computer adaptive testing system
the system makes choices about what questions
to give to students based on the students’
answers to previous test questions. That is
the adaptive quality. Unlike the previous
paper and pencil system where most students
saw the same test questions, the computer
adaptive test is completely customized to each
student’s ability level. Students will likely be
more engaged with the computer adapted
system. In the former pencil paper assessment,
students who know all the answers got bored
and student who might have struggled with
answering difficult questions gave up. Because
of the power of the computer-adaptive system,
students will need to answer fewer questions,
taking less time.
Ways to support your child through
Smarter Balanced Assessment:
• Discuss the new assessment with your
child. Make sure he or she is not scared or
anxious about it.
• With older children, explain that the
new assessments were created to help him
or her better prepare for college and career
• Explain to your child that the new
assessments will be more challenging,
especially the first time they are taken
• Tell your child that you and his or her
teacher have high expectations and that you are
both there to help them every step of the way.
• Review test results with your child,
bringing your child’s teacher into the discussion
as necessary
• Make sure your child gets a good night’s
sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing
Mark your calendars for our Open
House events throughout the district. Open

Dry Creek School District Update
BY BRAD TOOKER, Superintendent
As we move into spring, the
third trimester is underway, spring
sports have begun, schools are filled
with exciting activities, and we have
several recognitions to acknowledge
for both students and staff.
This year, seven students
qualified to represent the district
on March 12, 2015 at the Annual
Mr.
County-Wide Spelling Bee at the
Placer County Office of Education
in Auburn. Each of the qualifying district
students were recognized by the Dry Creek
Joint Elementary School District Board of
Trustees on March 19, 2015.
The Antelope Crossing Middle School
yearbook staff, under the direction of Ms.
Kim Burkhart, once again received First
Place recognition for their 2013-2014 edition
of “Crossroads” by the American Scholastic
Press Association. This is the third year in a
row they have received this prestigious first
place recognition.
Six students from Antelope Crossing
Middle School participated in the National
History Bee – Regional Finals in Fremont,
CA on March 11, 2015, and one-eighth grade
student qualified during the Regional Finals
to go to the National Finals, May 22-24, 2015
in Louisville, KY. Antelope Crossing Middle
School was well represented by two sixth grade
(elementary division) and three eighth grade
(middle school division) students, they each did
very well at the Regional Finals and we are very
excited to have one of our own representing us
at the National Finals. The National History
Bee is an academic competition
for elementary and middle school
students that tests knowledge of a
wide range of historical topics.
Teams from Olive Grove
Elementary, Antelope Crossing
Middle School, and Silverado
Middle School, participated in the
2015 Capital Gold Odyssey of the
Mind Tournament (OotM) held
Tooker
on Saturday, February 21, 2015. In
the competition, students are given
problems to solve and are scored based on
their creativity and “out of the box” type
thinking. All three schools had teams qualify to
move on to the state competition. Both teams
from Olive Grove Elementary, and one team
each from Antelope Crossing and Silverado
Middle Schools, will be heading to Riverside,
CA to participate at the state competition
on March 28, 2015. Congratulations to all of
the participants on their dedication and all of
the hard work they put in to compete in this
fabulous program.
The Fifth-Grade Math Bowl championship
goes to the Heritage Oak team. The fifth-grade
Math Bowl was hosted by Creekview Ranch
School on March 9, 2015. Each school was
represented by a four-person team to represent
their school in the competition. All fifthgraders in the district gathered at Creekview
Ranch School to cheer on their school’s team
during the competition.
Every year, many of our outstanding
staff members are nominated for special
recognition. This year, the Dry Creek Joint

Elementary School District is recognizing two
outstanding teachers to represent the district as
the 2015-2016 Teachers of the Year. Teachers
of the Year are:
Laura Benjamin, Creekview Ranch
School:
Mrs. Benjamin joined the Dry Creek
family in August 2007. She is dedicated to
student health, fitness and education in all
grades, K-8, at Creekview Ranch School
She was instrumental in developing and
implementing standards based physical
education to include the K-5 students in their
new K-8 school. Principal Marty Alberti states,
“Laura is an exemplary physical education
teacher, and her positive, “can do” attitude, is
infectious.” Congratulations Laura Benjamin!
Steve Sampson, Silverado Middle School:
Mr. Sampson joined the Dry Creek family
in July 2002. Principal Priscilla Rasanen states,
“Steve is a teacher for today, he encourages his
students to think, ask question and argue why
or why not? You may hear him request, ‘Write
a reason on your white-board. You have to have
a reason.’ In his class, it’s no longer...because
that’s how you do it. His style of teaching and
learning is a perfect fit for Common Core.” Mr.
Sampson is highly respect by his colleagues.
Congratulations Steve Sampson!
Silverado Middle School Principal
Priscilla Rasanen received recognition from
the Placer County Association of California
School Administrators (ACSA) as the ACSA
Placer County Middle School Principal of
the Year at an awards presentation held on
February 23, 2015, and on March 13, 2015, she
was recognized as the ACSA Region 2 Middle
School Principal of the Year!
The 2015-2016 Academic Calendar was
approved by the Board of Trustees on February
19, 2015. To view and/or print the calendar visit
the District website at www.drycreek.k12.ca.us.
In closing, I would like to remind everyone
as the weather warms to be alert while driving
in neighborhoods and around schools, as kids
will be outside playing more and walking/biking
to and from school.
Let us know what special things
your kids are doing in Antelope!

Clarence Clark IV — AKA CJ
BY LISA LISONBEE
We sure do have a talented group
of neighbors here in Antelope. Meet
Clarence Clark IV, who goes by C.J., a young
accomplished (and still aspiring!) musician.
C.J. grew up in Antelope, attending Olive
Grove Elementary, Antelope Crossing Middle
School and Antelope High School (after a
year at Oakmont, waiting for the high school
to be finished).
C.J. loves music. It’s a part of his life every
single day. He currently attends American
River College, which he picked for the great
music program and unparalleled teaching of
music theory. At ARC he has done Latin
Jazz Ensemble, Studio Jazz Ensemble (big
band), and Jazz Combos, which are smaller
ensembles, like quartets/quintets, etc.
Specifically, C.J. plays the saxophone,
but he also plays the Wind MIDI Controller
and sings. In elementary school he started by
singing and playing the piano but didn’t further
pursue the piano because once he got to high
school he liked the saxophone more. C.J. is
the type of musician who enjoys playing any
instrument he can get his hands on, so he can
find his way around the bagpipes, harmonica,
chanter, tin whistle, pan pipes and others.
For the past few years, C.J. has been in and

But C.J. does have interests other than
music. He played football all four years of
high school and he still enjoys playing sports
with his friends. He likes to relax, get outside,
play video games, jam with friends, and go to
the movies.
And he loves his parents. His parents have
always encouraged him in all his endeavors
and especially have helped him with his music
and obtaining his saxophone. His dad was
born in Georgia, but due to his father and his
military experience, has moved around a lot.
C.J.’s mother was born in Mexico but came to
California with her family in her teen years.
“It’s a blessing to have a supportive family!”
C.J. and his father get to spend time
together enjoying something they both love
- singing. They have performed in shows at
Sierra College, and at a community theater
called “Celebration Arts.” They both volunteer
as part of the music ministry at St. Clare
Church. And C.J.’s band the City of Trees
Brass Band is starting an educational outreach
program that will host free clinics at school
band classes.
When asked about his plans for the future,
C.J. is wise enough to realize that plans, with
life, change constantly. But he knows that
one of his main goals is to continue being
a musician. So he will continue to practice,
become better, network, and finish school.
Ideally, he will be able to make a living by
playing music. We wish our talented neighbor
the best of luck!
Do you know a neighbor who should be
recognized? Well, just let us know.

only as the spirit of AHS but a well respected
and accomplished program in Northern
California. The “crowd” teams are made up
of a Freshman, JV and Varsity team totaling
nearly 60 kids in each of the past 5 seasons.
This team cheers at football and basketball
games, charity events and rallies. The 20152016 Season Informational Tryout Meeting
is scheduled for Thursday, April 16th at
7pm in the Library. Tryouts are scheduled
for April 20th-24th. This is the only tryout
so interested incoming freshman families
should attend.
In addition to crowd, AHS Cheer has
had a highly competitive and decorated
competition team the past 5 years. They’ve
won 15 regional competitions, 2 West
Coast Championships in LA, and 2 Finalist
accomplishments at the biggest high school
competition in Orlando, Florida through 3
elimination rounds and getting to finals both
years, not an easy task.
To add to an already successful program,
AHS Cheer will begin its second season
participating as a demonstration school
for the new female emerging sport called
STUNT. This is an awesome new sport
that removes the crowd-leading element
and focuses on the technical and athletic
components of cheer, including partner
stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group

March 2014 through Nationals in January 2015. The Antelope

breathe cheerleading. The girls and their coaches not only love
the sport, but they exemplify the hard work and dedication that
it takes to master the sport they love.
AJT is proud to announce the placement of our Mighty Mite/

Heroes Big and Small of All Ages…
That’s The Antelope Shave To Save Crew
BY CINDY CAMPBELL
For the 5th straight year, this Team has
shined and made a statement to everyone
around them that they are NOT afraid to
Shave their heads in support of kids everywhere
who are battling childhood cancer. The St.
Baldricks event is held all over the country to
raise funds to find a CURE so that someday
no child will be lost to Cancer. With this year’s
totals still being calculated, they are sure to
surpass their team goal of $5,000 and together
they have raised over $24,000 in five years. I
would say that is pretty amazing and inspiring!
This year, they had 17 members, and they came
from all around the Antelope community, and
of all ages as you can see in these pictures.
The team will continue next year with Luke
Campbell leading the way, and we hope you
will join them on the 2016 Antelope Shave to
Save Crew. Look for information in January
2016. Thanks to each and every team member,
and Thanks to everyone that donated on their
bald heads, and if you didn’t get a chance to
donate, it isn’t too late;
go to www.stbaldricks.org/teams/
