Bristol Artist Celebrated at Cotswolds Fair
Works by the Bristol art Stanley Anderson RA (1884-1966) go on sale at
The Cotswolds Decorative Antiques & Fine Art Fair at Westonbirt School,
near Tetbury, Gloucestershire from 27th - 29th March 2015.
Original engravings belonging to art specialists Aquila Fine Art will
include by The Cooper’ line engraving (1947), one of a small collection
priced from £300 to £700. Best known for his series of line-engravings of
rural crafts from the 1930’s onwards, Anderson’s earlier subjects included
down-and-outs in London and Paris. Anderson was Bristol born and an
early member of the Bristol Savages, whom, along with Bristol Museum,
retain a number of his local works.

Anderson is currently being celebrated in a retrospective exhibition at
the Royal Academy, An Abiding Standard, The Prints of Stanley Anderson
which runs until 24th May 2015.

Rupert Annual
The £10,000 original cover artwork for a Rupert Annual from 1961
highlights a colourful display of illustrations belonging to Art of the
Imagination, the Salisbury dealers. This and others will be familiar to
anyone who once enjoyed the Rupert the Bear annuals and cartoon strips,
stories of King Arthur, the Chronicles of Narnia, The Jungle Book, The
Wind in the Willows, The Golden Compass and The Little Mermaid.
‘People love the nostalgia of childhood and these illustrations always bring
back memories,’ explains Mike Emeny from ‘Art of the Imagination’, art
dealers from Salisbury. Particularly eye-catching will be the original cover
artwork for the Rupert Annual 1961, by the artist Alfred Bestall. Painted
in watercolours and ink, it is on sale for £10,000 and is likely to be a very

now valued at tens of thousands of pounds when less than a decade ago a pen and ink drawing
could be bought for a few hundred pounds.
Another Rupert illustration, this a pen and ink drawing by Mary Tourtel for ‘Rupert and the Little
Prince’, published in 1930, signed by the artist, is priced at £1,450.
Also eye-catching will be a rare work by the highly collected artist Arthur Rackham. This original
coloured illustration for Legends of King Arthur, this signed work dates from 1902 and is on sale
for £14,000.
More affordable will be a number of original prints at £165 each of an illustration for Wind in the
Willows by the contemporary artist Angel Dominguez. The original painting for this print will
also be on sale - shown here with Mike Emeny.
The Cotswolds Fair
‘The Cotswolds Decorative Antiques & Fine Art Fair is always one of our most popular events of
the spring’, explains organiser Sue Ede of Cooper Events, who has been running the fair for more
than ten years. ‘The fair offers a wide variety of interesting and desirable pieces for collectors,
home furnishers, interior designers and anyone looking for unusual decorative pieces.’
The Great Hall, Orangery and adjoining rooms of Westonbirt House are transformed into an
Aladdin’s cave of temptations, from country antique furniture and Mid-Century Modern to eyecatching Art Deco, contemporary sculpture and illustrative art, including ceramics, glass, silver,
jewellery, textiles, Victorian paintings, period lighting, clocks and much more.
There are dealers showing stylish 20th century designer pieces, such as Scandinavian by Design,
Antiques by Design, Paul Burnett, Not Wanted on Voyage and Mere Antiques. Traditional antique
furniture, including farmhouse tables, dressers and chairs will be shown by Melody Antiques and
Brian Ashbee Antiques while Mark Buckley Antiques specialise in Victorian and early Edwardian
walnut and mahogany pieces.
The fair has many specialists, including new exhibitors A Heart of Glass, showing the best of
contemporary glass design by artists including Peter Lanyon, Lina Lundberg, Mats Jonasson, Pavel
Havelka, Bob Crooks and Allister Malcolm.
Other specialists include Muse - The Sculpture Gallery from Tetbury, jewellery specialists Plaza,
Brieve Antiques, Terry Robert, Trivette and Shapiro & Co, while Candice Horley shows a range of
designer costume jewellery from the 1930s and 40s.
Silver specialists offer a range of antique and 20th century pieces, including returning exhibitor Jack
Shaw Antiques and regulars Malka Levine and Peter McCarthy Antiques.
The fair features a wide selection of original art from specialists including Freya Mitton with 20th
Century British Art including works by Diana Armfield, John Bratby, Reginald Brill, Richard Ewick,
Mary Fedden, Sir Terry Frost, Dame Laura Knight and Julian Trevelyan; Plumbs Fine Art with contemporary works and Ashleigh House specialising in Victorian and early 20th century oils.
Also specialising will be Enid Riley with sewing tools and collectables, The Ambulist
with swordsticks, canes and walking sticks, Roger de Ville with early English pottery, Lucias Red
Roses with antique textiles and Lynways specialising in vintage and Retro glass and ceramics.
