PROGRAM OF EVENTS CITY OF UNLEY ANZAC CENTENARY PROGRAM 2015 A year of respect, remembrance and celebration of those who served in World War I. The ANZAC centenary from 2014 to 2018 remembers 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War. Around two thousand from Unley enlisted of a population of about 30,000. It is hard for us to imagine the collective psychology permeating through the neighbourhood as families saw many of their fit young men and women, putting their personal and professional lives on hold to enlist and fight and serve on the other side of the world. Our communities would never be the same again. These commemorations provide us with an opportunity to remember and to reflect. Our society today has been built upon the sacrifice that these soldiers made, through their service and some who paid with the sacrifice of their own lives. Australia found a new national identity in the trenches of Gallipoli and the Western Front. Qualities such as courage, larrikinism and ingenuity are still those associated with Australians today and which we celebrate with national pride. Some of us have family members who fought but none of us are unaffected by the ANZACS and their legacy that has shaped our local community and our nation. Lest We Forget Lachlan Clyne Mayor City of Unley UNLEY REMEMBERS 1915-2015 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli and the centenary of formation of Unley’s 27th Battalion. This program acknowledges these milestones and the birth of the ANZAC spirit. Through these events we aim to provide the community opportunities to reflect on and honour the service and sacrifice of all those who have worn our nation’s uniform, and to also acknowledge the support and sacrifice made by families and friends on the home front.
