I. Introduction
The
American College of Sports
®
Medicine (ACSM) is one of
the world most prestigious
professional bodies in fitness and sports medicine with more than 25,000 members in 60 countries
all across the world. ACSM also sets the industry standards for certifying health fitness professionals.
The ACSM certificates are also recognized as the highest standard in the fitness industry. With the
support from ACSM, the Physical Fitness Association of Hong Kong, China (PFA) and the Department
of Sports Science and Physical Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) are proud to
organize the ACSM Health Fitness Specialist Certification and Personal Trainer Certification Workshop
and Examination in Hong Kong. Do take this great opportunity to upgrade your professional standard
into the international level and ACT NOW!
Why ACSM?
• ACSM was the first to certify health fitness professionals … and today ACSM has certified over 25,000
health fitness professionals in 44 countries.
• ACSM establishes the exercise guidelines that all other certifications use for testing … so you know
you will be certified by the organization that is setting the standards in the health fitness industry.
• ACSM certifications are NCCA-accredited. The ACSM certifications are assured to meet the highest
qualifications.

Become an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer
ACSM Certified Personal Trainers are qualified to plan and implement exercise programs for healthy
individuals or those who have medical clearance to exercise. The ACSM Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)
works with apparently healthy individuals and those with health challenges who are able to exercise
independently to enhance quality of life, improve health-related physical fitness, performance, manage
health risk, and promote lasting health behavior change. The CPT conducts basic preparticipation
health screening assessments, submaximal cardiovascular exercise tests, and muscular strength/
endurance, flexibility, and body composition tests. The CPT facilitates motivation and adherence as well
as develops and administers programs designed to enhance muscular strength/endurance, flexibility,
cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and/or any of the motor skill related components of physical
fitness (i.e., balance, coordination, power, agility, speed, and reaction time).
Become an ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist
Are you a personal trainer ready to step up to the next level? Would you like the ability to work with
a wider variety of clients, including those with health risks? Then the ACSM Certified Health Fitness
Specialist Certification is for you.
The ACSM Certified Health Fitness SpecialistSM (HFS) is a health/fitness professional with a minimum of a
bachelor’s degree in exercise science. The HFS performs pre-exercise health risk assessments, conducts
physical fitness assessments, interprets results, develops exercise prescriptions, and applies behavioral
and motivational strategies to apparently healthy individuals and individuals with medically controlled
diseases and health conditions to support clients in adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors.
The academic preparation of the HFS also includes fitness management, administration, and supervision.
The HFS is typically employed or self-employed in commercial, community, studio, corporate, university,
and hospital settings.
The American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Committee on Certification & Registry Boards
has changed the name of ACSM Health Fitness Specialist Certification to better represent the scope
of practice and expertise of the exercise professionals holding this title. The new title, ACSM Certified
Exercise Physiologist, will replace ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist. ACSM conducted extensive
research prior to updating the title of its certification, surveying certified professionals, fitness industry
employers, health and medical partners and the general public. The survey data showed the new
name resonated with audiences across the board, with overall more than 70 percent of those surveyed
agreeing with the new title. For more information about the change of title, please browse:

Eighth Edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing. Examination includes “trial” questions
that are being tested for use in future examinations. These trial questions are randomly distributed
throughout the exam and will not be counted in the final results.
You will not be allowed to bring any materials or equipment into the examination area. A calculator
will be provided within the exam as it is needed.
7. After completing the exam, when will I receive my results?
You will receive your results immediately upon completion of the exam.
8. If I do not pass the exam, how quickly can I take a re-test?

examination 15 days following your initial examination and every 15 days following.
