MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Kia ora koutou, Gree ngs, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei,
Kia orana, Namaste
It is hard to believe that Term 1 has come to an end. And
what a full term it has been! Our students have thrown themselves into a very
wide range of ac vi es which have enriched their lives enormously. Just in the
past few weeks we have had the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare in Schools
compe on which three teams par cipated, as well as our senior boys and girls'
teams at the Volleyball Na onals in Palmerston North. Our senior rugby league
team le for Greymouth on Tuesday morning 1st April for the annual ﬁxture
against the West Coast team, which brings the term to its conclusion.
A highlight of the end of
the term was the ﬁrst ever
full teacher-only day for
the four schools who will
be forming the Aranui
Community Campus along
with St James School. This
was a very worthwhile day
and it was a great pleasure
to be the school which
hosted the event. The
highlight of the day was the presenta on by the team from Tamaki College led
by Deputy Principal Russell Dunn. This focussed on the impact of the
Manaiakalani project on the engagement of students at Tamaki College, and
how this changed the way students viewed their learning. This project is the
model on which our own Christchurch based Te Tihi o te Matauranga project is
based.
During the day we were also able to see the ﬁrst few images of the Community
Campus, which were presented by Cheryl Doig from the Establishment Board.
We have had long discussions with the Ministry of Educa on team who will be
overseeing the new school development. Over the July break we will see the ﬁrst
part of the development ini ated, with our Village buildings being moved - most
in the front of the Performing Arts Block on the former swimming pool site. We
have been assured that every eﬀort will be made to minimise noise and
disrup on as the construc on of the campus begins.
Term 2 will be equally busy, but fortunately, with fewer interrup ons. During
May, June and July we will be holding a number of “Open Day” events which will
consist of tours of the school while it is in opera on, with opportuni es for
interested parents and families to book in for one of these mes as suits. We
hope this change of model will be appealing.

ARANUI SERVICES ACADEMY
INDUCTION COURSE AND MARCH OUT
AT BURNHAM MILITARY CAMP
Parents and school representa ves once again enjoyed the annual March Out
Parade which marks the end of the two week Induc on Programme for the
Services Academies of the South Island.
This is a very challenging programme which gives students the opportunity to
experience life in the New Zealand Defence Force and is run en rely by their
staﬀ.
The students showed a great deal of pride in gradua ng from the programme.

ATHLETICS: Canterbury Championships
The Canterbury Championships were held the 21
March. Although it was a small team compe ng, there
was one outstanding result - Nunu Siaifa was placed
third in the Junior Girls Shot Put, se ng a new school
record of 10.45m.

School Drama students who
performed at the Fes val. Well
done, you all worked hard and
now understood the pressures
and performances required at
this level. I am proud of you all.
A special men on to the Year 13
“Othello” group who reached the
ﬁnal and performed in the
showcase on Thursday night. They are Courtney Petelo, Angeline Leversedge,
Ruvimbo Gezi, Cassandra Shearer and Eruera Manuel who was their ligh ng
Technician. Aranui High School were among the top six secondary schools in
Christchurch comple ng in the showcase ﬁnal. The aim was for all schools to
be rewarded as this is a FESTIVAL of William Shakespeare’s work and not
merely a compe on.

TE MATATINI
My experience at Te Matatini 2015 was an experience I won't forget. Being
there and seeing all the performers with so much confidence and passion
made me want to be like them. I loved the atmosphere, it made me want to
push myself further into my Māori culture. The performers also made me look
at myself and how I perform in my kapahaka group. To be honest I have a lot to
improve on and I definitely need to build my confidence.

Te Mata ni was an amazing experience that I had the privilege to a end with
not only my whānau, but also my kura (school). I felt very proud knowing that
my Māori culture was going to be shown to all of Aotearoa and also the world!
I loved each group that performed, however I was mainly suppor ng
Ruatāhuna, because that is where my family is from. This compe on is great
for Māori people to express themselves, their mana, and also represent their
iwi and whānau. It is always great to see the passion each performer has for
our culture.

POLYFEST
This year's Polyfest event was a full Saturday outdoor
event at Westminster Park. This was a great
improvement on last year's event spread over three
nights at the Celebra on Centre in Bickerton Street.
Our school's group was somewhat smaller than in past
years but s ll performed with great energy and
enthusiasm, and looked stunning in their very
colourful costumes. The fes ve atmosphere and the
beau ful early autumn weather made the en re day a
huge success.
Our Tonga Trip fundraising group was able to take advantage of the big crowds
who a ended on the day, to sell meals as part of its eﬀorts to raise the
considerable sum which this trip will cost.
VOLLEYBALL
Senior A Girls had a dream start to the Canterbury Championships winning
their ﬁrst 5 matches comfortably. They were then in Semi-ﬁnals vs Riccarton
High school, who they had beaten on the 5 previous matches, but had a poor
game when they failed to receive serve eﬀec vely. They then went on to gain
Bronze medals a er again convincingly bea ng CGHS for only 1 loss in the
Tournament. The girls were placed second to Burnside (Na onal Champions
for 2015) in the premier Monday night Compe on.
Senior B Girls also lost just 1 match in their semi-ﬁnal and won the 3rd and
4th playoﬀ for bronze medals. They were placed second in their Monday night
compe on losing just 1 match in the ﬁnal by 15 points to 13 in the ﬁ h set.
Senior Boys played very well throughout the tournament placing ﬁ h a er
losing to second placed Lincoln by 15-13 in the ﬁ h set.

have just to play the ﬁnal
match vs St Thomas's to win
the Junior trophy for the
Monday night compe on.
Na onals: Both Boys and girls have recently returned from a week in
Palmerston North. 91 girls and 64 boys teams competed and our teams
aqui ed themselves very well. Both teams made the quarter ﬁnal stage and
were both very unlucky to lose these games. The boys lost in a 2 hour ba le
with Palmerston North Boys High
School 15-13 in the ﬁ h set and
the girls lost narrowly to CGHS.
This was a very unexpected loss
due to injury and sickness against
a team we have dominated in 3
previous encounters. The trip
was a major event and wonderful
experience for the players. The
drive and ferry crossings are
always great team bonding mes
and the boys and girls were great
in their support for each other throughout the week. Well done to both teams
YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO MOUNT COOK
On the 11 March 2015, fourteen Year 12 students headed down to Mount Cook
for our annual Geography ﬁeldtrip. The trip was a huge success where students
collected data to present with their internal assessment, which they are comple ng at present. We stayed at Glentanner Park Centre for two nights and
took part in a range of excursions over the 3 days.
These included
walks to Hooker
and Tasman
Glaciers, up the
Governors Bush
Track and some
more competent
student’s even
par ally up the Red
Tarns track.
We looked around the visitors centre and watched two short ﬁlms in 3D about
the South Island High Country. The en re class were an absolute pleasure to
take away; they were polite and enthusias c throughout and supported each
other on some of the more challenging walks. A big thanks to Siobhan Murphy
who also accompanied us on the trip, it was a great experience and a lot of fun.
RUGBY LEAGUE
On Saturday the 28th of March the senior rugby league team played the NZRL
South Island Academy. The South Island Academy had been training since
December 2014 and wanted a game before they go to Wellington to play the
other provinces. Our senior boys went out and played to their best and ended
the game 24 all. 3 players
made their debut for the
senior team, Phillip Burton,
Isaac Houghton-Pawa and
Bruce
Taula
(who
was
outstanding).
The senior boys were missing
ﬁve of our most senior players
but we were proud of our
draw for the ﬁrst game of the
season

This provided senior students with an opportunity to sample some hands-on
learning at the Trades Campus. There will be a second “Have a Go” Day in

your jabs? PANADOL (Headache—students think about—enough water? Sleeping
ok? Stressed? Eyesight problems? PADS (Girls, please come and see Nurse Gina for
help and advice if you have period problems). Students will be referred to Gina if
ANY doubts. Gina can help also, ge ng students seen quickly by doctors (or other
Health Services if necessary.
We have a new Student Health Council star ng Term 2. Courtney Morgan-Jewi ,
Tim Harrington, Camille Kennedy, Tori Wright. There will be great opportuni es to
meet other schools Health councils—perhaps leading to them being Doctors,
Nurses and health decision makers in the future! These students will discuss
Youth Health issues and help promote these to fellow students. Cool prizes and
games to come—WATCH THIS SPACE!!
PARENT PORTAL AND ENGAGEMENT REPORT
This Portal is now up and running and can be accessed through
your Internet Browser, or can be accessed through the KAMAR
app on Smartphone. As well as a endance, metable and NCEA informa on,
this portal also includes a new fortnightly Engagement Report which will
indicate in real- me how your child is performing in all of their subjects at
school. To ensure that all parents have access to this Parent Portal, it is
essen al that we have a correct email address. Please no fy the school if your
email address is incorrect or no fy us if you have not advised us of such

A total of 6 pigs were
donated by our Tongan
families, along with a
wide variety of other
food.
A very successful dinner was
held in our School hall on
Saturday, 28 March, which
raised $5000.
Another fundraiser dinner will
be held very early next term.
The Tonga Trip will
coincide with the
Corona on of new
King George
