In an effort to tackle the 82% unemployment rate among people with disabilities, The Arc established The Arc of Indiana Foundation, tasked with creating business ventures that provide training and employment opportunities. Currently they are building the Erskine Greene Training Institute and Teaching Hotel in partnership with the City of Muncie, Indiana where people with disabilities will be provided postsecondary education opportunities and other training designed to lead to greater self-sufficiency. THE PROJECT AND ITS PURPOSE n n n n n n n n n n n n n n According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2013 unemployment among individuals with disabilities was 82%. In the absence of employment, individuals with disabilities are forced to seek public assistance to survive. Developed by The Arc of Indiana, the Erskine Green Training Institute and Teaching Hotel will be Indiana’s first statewide hospitality and healthcare training institute for individuals with disabilities. The project’s primary goal is to provide a postsecondary education opportunity that successfully trains individuals with disabilities in the hospitality, food service and healthcare industries resulting in their employment. The Erskine GreenTraining Institute and Teaching Hotel will train and employ individuals with disabilities throughout the hotel and restaurant in various capacities including management. To promote independence, the Teaching Hotel includes entrepreneurial venture opportunities within the hotel that are owned and operated by individuals with disabilities. The project will provide a resource for Indiana businesses to successfully hire and retain employees with disabilities. The Erskine Training Institute and Teaching Hotel will be a 150 room Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Muncie, IN with a restaurant and an attached parking garage. The Teaching Hotel will feature original artwork created by individuals with disabilities with opportunities to sponsor the artwork. The Teaching Hotel will operate as a for profit company paying taxes and supporting the State of Indiana. All profits will be used to support the Training Institute and other employment initiatives. The project will create approximately 129 jobs in the hotel and restaurant. At least 20% will be filled by people with disabilities. Anticipated opening is slated for late 2015. Located at 601 South High Street in downtown Muncie, IN, the Erskine Training Institute and Teaching Hotel will be attached to the Horizon Convention Center. Postsecondary training partnerships are being pursued with Ivy Tech Community College and Ball State University. POSITIVE Outcomes n n n n n n The Erskine Green Training Institute and Teaching Hotel project will lower Indiana’s unemployment rate for people with disabilities and generate new tax revenues. The Erskine Green Training Institute will provide a well-trained workforce for employment in the hospitality, food service and health care industries in communities throughout IN. The Erskine Green Training Institute and Teaching Hotel will set the standard for the future development of similar training institute projects. The project will provide a positive economic impact for the City of Muncie through the creation of additional property taxes, convention and tourism business and tourism and hospitality employment opportunities. The project will provide a positive economic impact for the State of Indiana by saving $4.5 million in public assistance for every 200 individuals with disabilities that become employed over 4.5 years. Development of the Erskine Green Training Institute and Teaching Hotel project will create construction opportunities for area contractors.
