any chains or boxes between the shells.

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st).
SPECIAL TERMS
shell: (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in indicated space.
offset-shell: (3 dc, ch 3, dc) in indicated space.
NOTES
1. Jacket body is worked in one piece from lower back edge, upwards to underarm. Stitches are added for sleeves and
then work continues to shoulders. At shoulders the piece is divided for fronts and back neck, and work continues
downwards to opposite underarm. Stitches are left unworked to complete sleeves and then work continues to lower front
edge.
2. Large front bands, that also form the collar, are worked around the front opening when the body is complete.
PATTERN STITCHES
Boxes and Shells (Body Pattern)
Row 1 (Foundation Row): 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first dc), ch 7, sk next 11 ch, *(2 dc, ch 1, 2
dc) in next ch (shell made), ch 7, sk next 11 ch; repeat from * across to last ch, 3 dc in last ch.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in first dc, ch 7, sk next ch-7 sp, *shell in ch-1 sp of next shell,
ch 7, sk next ch-7 sp; repeat from * across to last 3 dc, 3 dc in last dc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, ch 4, sl st in marked ch 3 rows below (remove the marker), turn; ch 3, dc in next 4 ch, turn,
ch 3, place a marker in top of ch-3 just made, dc in each dc across (box made); *shell in ch-1 sp of next shell, ch 4, sl st
in marked ch 3 rows below (remove the marker), turn; ch 3, dc in next 4 ch, turn, ch 3, place a marker in top of ch-3 just

Row 1: Ch 5, offset-shell in ch-3 sp of each offset-shell across, 3 dc in turning ch-sp, turn.

BACK
Note: Before beginning Body, work one sleeve ch as follows: Ch 36, loosely. Set this chain aside. Later, it will be joined to
one side of the body to serve as the foundation ch of one of the sleeves.
Beginning at lower back edge, ch 100 (112, 124, 136), loosely.
Row 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first dc), ch 7, sk next 11 ch, place a marker in center ch of ch-11
just made, *(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch (shell made), ch 7, sk next 11 ch, place a marker in center ch of ch-11 just made;
repeat from * across to last ch, 3 dc in last ch—8 (9, 10, 11) pattern repeats.
Repeat Rows 2–4 of Boxes and Shells pattern until piece measures 10"/25.5cm from beginning; end by working a Row 3 of
pattern.
Begin Sleeves
Remove hook from loop at end of last row of back (do not fasten off, just drop the loop). Pick up sleeve ch and insert hook
in last loop, and join with sl st to top of turning ch (first dc) of last row of Body. Fasten off. Return hook to dropped loop.
Row 1: Ch 39, loosely, turn, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first dc), ch 7, sk next 11 ch, [shell in next
ch, ch 7, sk next 11 ch] twice, shell in top of next dc, ch 7, sk next box, *shell in ch-1 sp of next shell, ch 7, sk next box;
repeat from * across to turning ch of back, shell in top of turning ch; working across sleeve ch, ch 7, sk next 11 ch, [shell in
next ch, ch 7, sk next 11 ch] twice, 3 dc in last ch—14 (15, 16, 17) pattern repeats.
Repeat Rows 2–4 of Boxes and Shells pattern until piece measures 12"/30.5cm from beginning of sleeves; end by working
a Row 3 or pattern. Do not fasten off.
FIRST FRONT
Row 1 (dividing row): Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, ch 7, sk next box, [shell in ch-1 sp of next shell, ch 7, sk next box] 4 (4, 5, 5)
times, 3 dc in ch-1 sp of next shell, turn; leave remaining sts unworked for back neck and second front—5 (5, 6, 6) pattern

Sk next 4 (5, 4, 5) unworked boxes following first front (for back neck), join yarn with sl st in ch-1 sp of next shell.

End Sleeve
Beginning at sleeve edge, sk first 3 boxes of sleeve, join yarn with sl st in ch-1 sp of next shell.
Next Row: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-1 sp, [ch 7, sk next box, shell in ch-1 sp of next shell] 1 (1, 2, 2) time(s), ch 7, sk next
box, 3 dc in last dc, turn—2 (2, 3, 3) pattern repeats.
Working over 2 (2, 3, 3) pattern repeats only, repeat Rows 2–4 of Boxes and Shells pattern until first front measures
10"/25.5cm from end of sleeve; end by working a Row 3 of pattern. Note: Fold piece at shoulder and ensure that front and

FINISHING
Fold the piece at shoulder line. Sew side and sleeve seams. Note: When sewing sleeve seams, sew foundation chains of
sleeves to sts of last Row 3 of sleeves.
Front Bands/Collar
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in lower front corner.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 69 sc evenly spaced up front edge, 42 (34, 42, 34) sc evenly spaced across back neck, and 69 sc
evenly spaced down other front edge, turn—180 (172, 180, 172) sc.
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sc, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, sk next sc, dc in next 2 sc; repeat from * across to last sc, dc in
last sc, turn—44 (42, 44, 42) pattern repeats.
Repeat Row 1 of Offset Shells pattern until front bands/collar measures 8"/20.5cm from beginning; end by working a WS
row.
Note: The last round is worked across all edges of jacket, including front edges, back neck edge, and lower edge.
Last Round: Ch 5, offset-shell in ch-3 sp of each offset-shell across front band, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in turning ch-sp, do not
turn; working in ends of rows across lower edge of front bands/collar, 5 dc in each ch-5 sp across; 3 dc in end of last row;
working in sts of front lower edge, 3 dc in sp between first and second st, ch 3, sc in tip of next box, ch 3, [5 dc in ch-3 sp
of next shell, ch 3, sc in tip of next box, ch 3] 1 (1, 2, 2) times, 5 dc in side seam; working across opposite side of
foundation ch of lower back, ch 3, 5 dc in ch at base of next box, ch 3, *sc in base of next shell, ch 3, 5 dc in ch at base
of next box, ch 3; repeat from * across lower back edge, 5 dc in side seam; working in sts of other front lower edge, sc in
tip of next box, ch 3, [5 dc in ch-3 sp of next shell, ch 3, sc in tip of next box, ch 3] 1 (1, 2, 2) times, 3 dc in sp between
2nd to last and last st of front lower edge; working in ends of rows of front bands/collar, 3 dc in end of first row, 5 dc in

Sleeve Edging
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in sleeve seam at wrist.
Round 1: Ch 1, working in ends of rows, work 80 sc evenly spaced around edge; join with sl st in first sc—80 sc.
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), sk next sc, dc in next 2 sc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, *sk next sc, dc in next 2 sc, (dc, ch 3,
dc) in next sc; repeat from * around to last 3 sc, sk next sc, dc in last 2 sc, dc in same sc as beginning ch-3; join with ch 1,
hdc in top of beginning ch (join counts as ch-3 sp)—20 pattern repeats.
Round 3: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, dc) in first ch-3 sp (formed by join), offset-shell in ch-3 sp of each offset-shell around; join
with sl st in top of beginning ch.
Fasten off. Repeat around other sleeve.
Using yarn needle, weave in ends. Block lightly, if desired.
