BARGELLO I—110 X 110
The Bargello Quilt kit is a very simple quilt to construct. You will be making long strips and sewing
them together, not unlike a Sunshine and Shadows pattern except that the rows will vary in widths
and placement of the colors to make the pattern work. Study the whole pattern before you begin as
this is a project that looks very complicated but actually is very easy. Bargello patterns have been
around for centuries in tapestries, knitting, crocheting etc. Now you can make a beautiful quilt from
the same kinds of designs.
PIECE CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
Cut strips the widths on the chart below and then cut blocks down the strips in 3 7/8” lengths in the
required number of pieces as in the diagram above. Stack your colors in the various sizes and be
sure to keep them marked as to the color numbers as you cut.

CONSTRUCTING THE STRIPS
Now let’s sew the strips together to construct the quilt top. Use the charts below to sew the rows
together. You may want to number the rows as you sew them or simply make a row and then the
next row and sew them together as you go:

Cut 8---2 1/2”strips of color #16. Sew to quilt top with square end sets.
Border #2
Border #2 is a pieced border. Cut 4” X 4” blocks as per the chart below:

SEWING CHART FOR PIECED BORDER
Now sew the pieced border blocks into correct sequence using the chart below:

Right
Now sew the block border to the quilt top keeping the sequence as above. The top and bottom
borders are constructed left to right and construct the left and right borders as above. You will note
the left and right borders are marked with an arrow noting the top of the quilt.
BORDER #3
Cut 8—4” strips of color #6 and construct 4 border pieces. Sew to quilt top with square end sets.
BORDER #4
Cut 10—4”strips of color #18 and construct 4 border pieces. Sew to quilt top with square end sets.
BORDER #5
Cut 10—4 1/2” strips of color #19 and construct 4 border pieces. Sew to quilt top with square end
sets to complete the quilt top and borders.
FINISHING THE QUILT
Make your backing as usual, place on large table and layer the batting.
Place top on top of the sandwich. Then baste and quilt in the usual manner. I like to quilt in the ditch on
these types of quilts so that you don’t “shadow” the design with the quilting in ¼” as is standard. But as Mom
used to say “do the way YOU want”. That way it’s yours.
