Remembering Butterfly Project On Sunday, April 19, Hillel formally dedicated the Butterfly Project installation as part of the international Zikaron V’Tikvah—Remembrance and Hope initiative. Sponsored by Amy and Wayne Gould, the project commemorates the 1.5 million children who were killed during the Holocaust, represented by ceramic butterflies. Students Daniella Almeida ’16 and Jamie Oko ’15 were instrumental in organizing the project. Pictured from left to right are: Wayne Gould, Rep. Martha McSally and Amy Gould On hand to lead the celebration were Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and U.S. Congressional Representative Martha McSally. Mayor Rothschild read the proclamation of the City of Tucson naming April 19 as Holocaust Survivor and Butterfly Project Day. Over 120 students and community members attended, including a dozen Holocaust survivors. Now over 600 beautiful ceramic butterflies grace the entrance to Hillel where they fly in a memorial of hope and remembrance. 24th Annual Holocaust Vigil "I tell my story so that it won't become your future" Leslie Meisels- Holocaust survivor At noon on March 25, a large book was placed on a podium in the center stage of the UA Mall. The first of 6 million names of Jews listed in the book was read by students and community volunteers. This year marked the 24th anniversary of the Annual Holocaust Vigil, a 24-hour program dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust. Photo by Ben Bernstein The student-designed and organized program was led by Hanna Port ’15 and Jonathan Burger ’16. The Vigil provided numerous opportunities for students to commemorate the Holocaust and re-affirm “never forget, never again.” Participants listened to survivors’ stories, and a discussion led by Meryl Engle, ’16, “How do We Teach About the Holocaust When There are No More Survivors.” Notably, the entire middle school of Tucson Hebrew Academy attended the opening hours of the Vigil. Numerous displays were created on the Mall to inform and educate the community of the horrors of the Holocaust. Participants were invited to paint ceramic butterflies that became part of the Butterfly Project installation. Over 300 butterflies were painted throughout the Vigil in commemoration of the lives of children lost during the Holocaust. Whether it is through sponsoring programs; providing matching dollars for campaigns; purchasing ticket packages for our annual event; or by donating to our special appeals, your contributions make a difference. Steve Caine & Michelle Blumenberg In March, Hillel sponsored our annual fundraising event at UA Centennial Hall. “See Jane Sing” featured Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jane Lynch. Our donors were treated to an amazing program followed by a dessert reception sponsored by Alice and Paul Baker. 2014-2015 Board of Directors Chair: Steve Caine Vice Chair: Mark Hanna Treasurer: Suzanne Baron Helming Secretary: Dina Benita Immediate Past Chair: Steve Kippur MEMBERS Marc Epstein Gavi Fine John Judin Brian Kanter Nancy Koff Ruth Kolker Jason Lazarow Ken Miller Dana Narter Hanna Port Thomas Sayler-Brown Alyssa Silva Professional Staff Michelle Blumenberg, Executive Director Deborah Jassem, Development Director Amalia Mark, Director of Jewish Student Life Charae Stewart, Operations Manager Naama Cohen, Jewish Agency Israel Fellow Adam Fox, Engagement Intern Nancy Finkelstein, Bookkeeper Jane Lynch with John Linder and event co-chair Thomas Sayler-Brown For over thirty-eight years, Hillel has awarded the Ben and Sally Smith Memorial College Youth Award to an outstanding young Jewish leader on campus. Jamie Oko Alyssa Silva Jewish Wildcats Giving Back In the spirit of tzedakah, the act of justice, righteousness and fairness, Hillel students have engaged in several programs throughout the year to benefit those in need. Share the Love Share the Love was a program sponsored by Campus Hillel’s Heroes Challenge, an interfaith effort that seeks to build bridges between faith traditions. Participants included Hillel, Little Chapel of All Nations, Newman Center, Lutheran Campus Ministry, Episcopal Campus Ministry, University Religious Council, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and ASUA. The group chose poverty and hunger as an issue that crosses faith and cultures as a real and relevant problem that could be tangibly addressed in Southern Arizona. Students succeeded in raising over $790 that provided 3160 meals for hungry Tucsonans. In the true spirit of tikkun olam, Hillel students are committed to bridging faiths and addressing hunger in their communities. Challah for Hunger Challah for Hunger grew out of the desire to address global hunger and promote advocacy and awareness about food insecurity in a Jewish context. Challah for Hunger now has chapters at universities all over the country and the UA Hillel is proud to participate. Students meet every Thursday night to bake a variety of challah flavors (chocolate chip is the hands down favorite) and learn about the Jewish perspective on tikkun olam, hunger, and charity. On Fridays, the bread is sold on the UA Mall and proceeds are donated to the Southern Arizona Community Food Bank and to Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger. CatPac Cares Co-sponsored by Hillel and fraternity AEPI, CatPac Cares was a combined effort to organize donated care packages for lone soldiers in Israel. 80 students participated in this effort to provide necessary and fun items for these soldiers without family in Israel. Save a Child’s Heart On February 10, the Wildcats for Israel Team participated in a day of fundraising to support the Save a Child’s Heart Organization (SACH). Students bought colorful hearts and wrote “get well” wishes to the children. Based in Israel, SACH is one of the largest undertakings in the world, providing pediatric heart surgery for indigent children from developing countries. Left to Right) Ryan Amendariz, Naama Cohen, Edden Dembsky, Sivan Shahmoon and Alma Hernandez L’Dor v’Dor—Intergenerational Philanthropy When Wildcat Soccer player Sara Harelson first came to Hillel in the fall of 2014, she began to develop a deeper interest in “all things Israel.” The first year student athlete had a lot on her plate, but she still found the time to attend meetings and events at Hillel. Sara comes from a family with a long tradition of philanthropy and “tzedakah.” According to her grandfather, Bernard Briskin, his father taught him the importance of giving back and that is the lesson he wishes to impart to his family. With a long standing interest in preserving Judaica, Bernard, his wife Judy, along with his daughter Julie Harelson, son-in-law Matthew Pictured from left to right are: Judy Briskin, Sara Harelson, Bernard Briskin & Julie Harelson Harelson and granddaughter, Sara, helped to support the Torah restoration project. The 200 year old scroll given by an anonymous donor to the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies was in need of repair. It was in part through their generosity that the program was able to bring in an expert, a sofer, to restore the scroll. Long- time members of Temple Israel of Hollywood, Judy and Bernard Briskin are helping to raise funds for the expansion of their Day School. The Briskins are putting together a Board of Advisors to oversee the project. Sara and her mother Julie are part of that endeavor. But philanthropy does not just run in one side of Sara’s family. Fourth generation philanthropist Sara is a thirdgeneration Wildcat on her father Matt’s side. Her late grandfather, Hugh, a UA alumnus, was a journalist, former editor of Arizona Highways and a supporter of the School of Journalism. Sara recently declared a minor in journalism and will attend some of her classes in the Hugh Harelson Reporting Laboratory on campus. The computer lab was a gift to the department from the Harelson and Briskin families. Sara has learned a lot about philanthropy from her family. According to her parents, Julie and Matt, “giving back, whether it is your time or your resources, is not a luxury, it is mandatory. In the spirit of tikun olam it means leaving the world a better place.” Sara recently decided to provide her family’s financial support to Hillel by sponsoring two very important programs: the Israeli Shabbat that was held in April and Israel Week 2016. In spite of her busy schedule as a student athlete, Sara hopes to find the time to work with our new Israel Fellow on crafting an exciting program for next year’s Israel Week. It should be a fun and meaningful program. We will be looking forward to it! ISRAEL One very important goal of Hillel is to instill in our students a deep regard for Israel by fostering a strong relationship and connection through our programs and outreach. Hillel sponsors several programs throughout the year that aim to positively promote Israel and to help students understand the complexities of the Middle East. Israelpalooza The Israel cultural festival was held on October 22. Every fall, students prepare a day-long celebration of Israel on the Mall of the University of Arizona Campus. The entire campus community is invited to partake in Israeli foods, displays and games. Israel Week 2015 More than 325 students gathered together in the Hillel parking lot on April 30 for an Israeli BBQ that marked the end of Israel Week 2015, a celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut. Students enjoyed a wide array of Israeli food from falafel to shishkabob to Turkish coffee. Activities included a photo booth where students had the chance to don silly costumes, cram themselves into the booth and commemorate the event with a photo. While the D.J. played his music, many students stood in line to have arms adorned with beautiful henna tattoos. A special thanks to Sara and Tom Borin for sponsoring this year’s events. Israeli Shabbat Each semester, following Israelpalooza and Israel Week, students partake of a special Israeli Shabbat dinner that features traditional Israeli food. This semester’s Israeli Shabbat was sponsored by Sara Harelson and her family. AIPAC Award – At the national AIPAC conference held in March in Washington D.C., CatPac Wildcats for Israel were awarded the Duke Rudman Award as the nation’s most outstanding AIPAC campus. CHILLIN’ & CELEBRATING Chillel Every Thursday, from 11 AM-1 PM, Hillel provides a space for students to “chill,” study, and meet with friends. While Hillel is always open for students, Thursdays are a special day for Hillel’s Heroes students to spend time together. Chillel fosters the community of which Hillel is so proud, one of Jewish students finding and cultivating a community of other Jews within the doors of Hillel. Chillel provides space and time for students to re-connect with their Judaism or just to take a coffee study break with their Jewish friends. Jews n’ Brews Is a monthly gathering of 21 and older students who meet for a beer at a local pub to explore post-college opportunities in Israel. This event is sponsored by Masa Israel Journeys. Havdalah On a balmy Saturday April evening, students gathered together in front of Hillel for a peer-led Havdalah service. Taylor Wachman ’19 and Adam Rozansky ’17 provided guitar accompaniment for the service. Marisa Hoffman ’17 and Meryl Engle ’16 offered explanations of each part of the service - from the reasons behind the Havdalah candle to why we smell sweet spices. With arms clasped around each other, singing the blessings, students bid goodbye to Shabbat and welcomed in the new week. Passover Seder Hillel hosted over 100 students for Passover Seder this year. Alyssa Silva ’15 and Taylor Wachman ’19 planned and led a fun, engaging Seder that had students laughing, singing, and dipping parsley in salt water together. Each Seder table had three types of charoset, plagues galore, and lots of yummy matzah for students to snack on before the brisket was served. This year’s Seder was one of learning, fun, and enjoyment with the entire Hillel family. 2014-2015 Graduating Seniors: Were recognized at the final Shabbat of the semester in April We can’t wait to see what our incredible graduates will accomplish!
