This includes: 1) the infrastructure or “pipes” used to deliver your service; 2) high-speed access to the Internet; and/or 3) the services and applications available via broadband networks, such as Internet protocol television (IPTV). The delivery methods for broadband vary, with each having its own strengths and weaknesses. The most common method is cable modem. Coaxial cable usually supplies both television and Internet, without much modification. The cable consists of two wires, one inside the other, and is capable of using broadband frequencies to transmit large amounts of data. If the cables are used for Internet access, a cable modem must be installed to convert the data signal into information your devices can understand. Another data transmission system capable of delivering broadband services is fiber-optic cable. Fiber is the utilization of super-fine glass fibers to transmit light which bounces along the pipe like it would with a system of mirrors until it reaches its destination. Arvig Contests Another system is Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) which delivers broadband to the home via standard telephone lines. Since telephone lines can be found practically everywhere, setting up DSL systems is convenient and readily available. It requires the use of special DSL routers; and since each user has a dedicated line, high-traffic periods don’t affect individual Internet speeds.
