Skill Level: advanced beginner
Abbreviations:
k: knit
p: purl
K2tog: Knit the next 2 stitches together. This makes a decrease that slants to the right.
SKP: Slip the next stitch from the left needle to the right. Knit the following stitch then pass the slipped
stitch over the knitted stitch and off the right needle. This makes a decrease that slants to the left.
Instructions:
Cast on 38 stitches.
Top:
R1: Slip the first st, *k1, p1, repeat from the * up to the last stitch, p1.
Repeat row 1 five times.
Work in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl the next) for 6” from the bottom of the ribbing.
Heel:
Slip 1, k9, bring the yarn to the front of the work, slip the next st from the left to the right needle. Move
the yarn to the back of the work, slip the st back to the left needle and turn the needles around. The
stitch at the tip of the right needle has not been worked. It instead has yarn wrapped around it. Purl
to the end of the row. In this case that is 10 stitches.
This is called a wrap and turn and is necessary to prevent holes in your stocking. The 10 stitches now
have an extra 2 rows. You can see a wedge beginning to form for one half of the heel.
Repeat the short row shaping by working one less stitch on each knit row and purling to the end. When
you have purled just 1 stitch, turn and knit across the entire row. As you come to a wrapped stitch,
pull the wrap onto the left needle and knit it together through the back loop.
To work the second half of the heel, slip 1, p9, move the yarn to the back. Slip the next st to the right
needle. Move the yarn to the front, slip the st back to the left needle and turn the needles around.
Knit to the end of the row. Continue as you did for the other side, just starting your wrap and turn on
the purl side. When you get all of the stitches worked, turn and purl across the row, working the
wraps along with the stitches.
Whew! That's a lot to take in. Learning to do short rows is a good technique to know, though. It can be
used to make circles, and doing the shaping of shoulders on a sweater.
Now to continue our stocking.
Foot:
Make sure you have 38 stitches on the needle. Work stockinette stitch for 4” from the heel.
Toe:
Row 1: Slip 1, *k6, k2tog, k2, skp, k12, k2tog, k2, skp, k7 – 34 sts.
Row 2: Slip 1, purl across.
Repeat rows 1 – 2, working one less stitch before each k2tog and after each skp until there are 26
stitches left. End with a purl row. Bind off.
Seam the back and foot edges together. Fold the toe so that the top and bottom of the stocking meet and
seam the toe.
