Found on the northern coast of Madagascar in a rough and almost inaccessible area, it is sourced along the coastline at low tide only, where small boats leave shore, loaded up and waiting for high tide to come. Tons of material needs to be mined, analysed, first roughly hammered, and then cut into smaller lots. Then it is sorted for use and by color. Volcanic eruptions and movements of the earth crust have pressed together different minerals over millions of years, developing layers of stone out of jasper, quartzes (the transparent part) and other minerals. It requires experienced gemstone cutters with a trained eye for „good and no good“ to work this mineral, and lastly, our final touch to select and determine the most beautiful patterns: Some look like pictures taken from space – we call them Landscape Jasper, and some look like hand-painted enamel – we call them Picasso Jasper. It is hard to believe that these multi-textured gems are just one piece of stone!
