Rows 2–30 Work same as Row 2 on

measure approx 4"/10cm square. If necessary, adjust hook size to obtain correct

NOTES
1 Leave long tails when fastening off near
fingers. Use tails to close any small holes
between fingers.
2 Take care when working the alternating
half double crochet and slip stitch pattern.
The thin, variegated yarn can make the slip
stitches a bit difficult to see. Take care to
work slip stitches loosely, and count the
number of stitches in each row or round.
3 The buttons and button loops were
intended to be worn on the inside of the
wrist, but you may prefer the buttons on
the outside.

BROOMSTICK LACE
Try your hand at a new stitch with this lacy fabric—broomstick optional.
BY ELLEN GORMLEY
T
he first question most
people have about broomstick lace is, “Is it really made
with a broomstick?”
The answer is that although you can
use a broomstick, it’s not required to
produce this lacy fabric, which is also
known as “jiffy lace,” “lace loops,”
and “peacock’s eye.” A large knitting needle works just as well, and its
diameter determines the size of the
lace’s eye. Your project will be the same
width as the needle’s length, unless you
combine strips of lace to make a wider
piece. For extra-wide projects, you can
use an actual broomstick or knitting
needle with a flexible cable.
To begin, you’ll need a regular
crochet hook, yarn, and a single jumbo
knitting needle in size 17 (12.75mm),
19 (15 mm), 35 (19 mm), or 50 (25 mm).
Broomstick lace is a two-step process that is similar to Tunisian Crochet
(Afghan Stitch): Loops are worked on
in one direction (loop pass), and then
12
Resources www.crochettoday.com
worked off in the other direction (return
pass), without turning the work.
CHOOSING SIDES
You’ll see that on the wrong side of the
fabric, a visible crochet ridge shows
where the wrong side of the single
crochets are placed. Although there is
a noticeable difference between the
wrong and right sides, you can choose
which to use for the “public” side of
your project.
STAYING ON TRACK
In simpler patterns, the number of
loops and the number of foundation
stitches should be equal. This means
if the groups in the pattern are made
of 4 loops, the foundation should be a
multiple of 4. If the groups are made
of 5 loops, the foundation should be
a multiple of 5, and so on. Check your
progress by counting the loops to make
sure you have the correct number before
working them off the stick/needle.
MEASURING GAUGE
You measure stitch gauge by the
number of groups per inch. One complete row is defined as one loop pass
together with one return pass. Row
gauge is the number of complete rows
per inch. Broomstick projects end after
you complete the single crochet return
pass.
A typical gauge for a broomstick lace
pattern might read: 3 groups (1 group is
4 loops) and 4 rows = 4".
Like traditional crochet, if your swatch
does not have enough stitches per inch,
try a smaller hook and smaller diameter stick/needle. If the swatch has five
groups in 4", but the pattern calls for
four groups in 4", then bigger stitches
are required. In this case, switch to a
bigger hook and stick/needle. If the
swatch has only three groups in 4", but
the pattern calls for four groups in 4",
the stitches should be smaller to fit more
in the space. Try again with a smaller
hook and stick/needle.
Step by Step
Step 1 You can begin with either a
foundation chain or a foundation
row of single crochet, but you’ll
probably find it’s easier to start with
an sc foundation. After you make the
foundation, hold the broomstick/
needle against the last stitch, remove
the hook from the last loop, enlarge
the loop, and insert the stick/needle
in its place.
Step 4 Continue this method of
pulling up loops across the work and
putting each one on the stick/needle.
In the end, there will be one loop for
each stitch in the previous row. One
loop pass has been completed. Do
not turn the work.
Step 7 In the same eye, sc the same
number of times as there are loops in
the group. Slide the hook under the
next 4 or 5 loops on the stick/needle
and stitch in the eye as specified.
Step 5 To begin the return pass, slide
the hook under the first 4 or 5 loops
on the stick/needle, as specified in
your pattern.
Step 2 Use the crochet hook to pull
up loops and place them on the
stick/needle. Pull the new loops
either through both loops on the
hook, or through the foundation’s
front or back loop, depending on
what your pattern requests.
Step 3 For each stitch, remove the
hook from the new loop, insert
the hook in the next stitch, and
pull up another loop.
13
Resources www.crochettoday.com
Step 8 At the end of the row, do
not turn. Remove the hook from the
last loop, and place the loop on the
stick/needle.
Step 6 Loosely yarn over with the
working yarn and pull through to
secure with a chain. Subsequent
groups do not need a chain to
secure, instead single crochet in the
eye according to the pattern. If the
securing chain is too tight, the first
group will be too short compared to
the rest of the row. The space where
the chain pulled through becomes the
“eye” of the broomstick stitch.
Step 9 Begin the next loop pass
with Step 2.

Making a
Foundation Chain
1
Start by making a slipknot and positioning it near the end of the hook. Wrap the
working yarn (the yarn attached to the ball or
skein) around the hook as shown. Wrapping
the yarn in this way is called a yarn over.
2
Draw the yarn through the loop on the
hook by catching it with the hook and
pulling toward you.
Single Crochet (sc)
1
Insert the hook under both the front
and back loops (i.e., under the complete “V”) of the 2nd chain from the hook.
Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to
front (this is called a yarn over) and catch
it with the hook. Draw the yarn through
the V.
2
You now have two loops on the hook.
Yarn over and draw the yarn through
both loops on the hook.
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
1
For this stitch, yarn over, then insert
the hook under the “V” of the 3rd
chain stitch from the hook. Yarn over
again and draw the yarn through the V.
2
You now have three loops on the
hook. Yarn over and draw the hook
through all three loops at once.
3
One chain stitch is complete. Lightly tug
on the yarn to tighten the loop if it is very
loose, or wiggle the hook to loosen the loop
if it is tight. Repeat from step 1 to make as
many chains as required for your pattern.
3
do not count
loop on
hook
One single crochet stitch is complete.
Continue to repeat steps 1 and 2, inserting the hook into each V across the row.
3
One half double crochet stitch
is complete. Repeat steps 1 and
2 until you reach the end of the row.
To proceed to the next row, make
two chain stitches and turn.

4
To count the number of chain stitches
made, hold the chain so that the “V”s are
all lined up. Do not count the loop on the hook
or the slipknot you made when beginning the
chain. Each V counts as one chain made.
24

4
When you reach the end of the row,
make one chain stitch (this is called a
turning chain), then turn the piece from
right to left. To begin the next row, insert
the hook under the V of the first stitch
(skipping the one chain stitch you just
made) and repeat the steps.

front post stitch
Insert the hook under the “V” indicated in
the pattern. Yarn over and draw through the
V and through the loop on the hook in one
movement. One slip stitch is complete.
Note that the slip stitch does not create
much height when worked; it is used
mainly to anchor stitches, shape pieces, join
circles, and for other utilitarian jobs.
Front Post Stitch
2
You now have three loops on the
hook. Yarn over and draw the yarn
through the first two loops.

You now have four loops on the

back post stitch
Working with hook in front of work, insert
hook from right to left around the post (or
