S34: Applications and Presentation Layer Madeleine Noland, S34 Chairman LGE S34 Organization S34-1 – Video S34 S34-2 – Audio S34-3 – Conceptual Models S34-4 – Interactivity Runtime Environment S34-5 – Accessibility S34-3 – Conceptual Models • • • Conceptual Models flesh out requirements developed by S31 – Additional input was solicited to clarify requirements as needed Goal is to provide detailed input to guide detail/technical work in other SGs and AHGs Documents include: – Service Conceptual Model – Advanced Emergency Alerting Framework – Personalization Conceptual Models • Rendering/Accessibility Preferences • Targeting/Demographics – Service Usage Reporting Model – Companion Device Model S34-3 – Service Conceptual Model • Service Conceptual Model addresses the following questions – What is a Service? – What kinds of Services are possible? – What is a Service composed of? – How does it all go together? S34-3 – SCM: Types of Services • Enhanced linear services – Multiple, alternative components, apps and more • OnDemand services • Interactive Applications – As enhancements to A/V services – As stand-alone application services • Audio-only services S34-3 – SCM: Service Components • Audio, video, captions, applications • Multiple alternative components – Select one (e.g., choose an audio track) – Select more than one (e.g., main view & PiP) – May be user selectable (e.g., choose CC track) – May be auto-selectable (e.g., receiver chooses the one it’s capable of rendering) S34-3 – SCM: Hybrid Delivery • Broadcast-only services – All signaling and components delivered by terrestrial broadcast • Hybrid services: Broadcast+broadband – Some components/signaling delivered by broadcast and others by broadband, combined and synced at receiver • Broadband hand-off capability – E.g., to support temporary loss of RF reception – All signaling and components temporarily delivered by broadband Note: pure OTT (i.e., no connection with or origination from broadcast) is out of scope of ATSC. S34-3 – SCM: Programs & Interstials • Temporal divisons of a linear service or on-demand session • Program: specific airing of a Show including any interstitials • Show: The “main event” of a Program • Segments: portions of a Show airing in a Program, typically separated by interstitials • Interstitials: ads, promos, pledge drives, etc. Flexible Service Model - Components Components Interactive App App App Closed Captions 2 Closed Captions CC CC CC Audio 2 Audio Audio Audio Audio Video 2 Video Video Video Program (time) Video Hybrid broadcast/broadband delivery is possible And components can be dynamically selected and combined at the receiver. Video • • • • • • • Enhanced HD UHD is a key goal of ATSC 3.0 Targeting small screens (HD) and big screens (UHD) High efficiency compression – all proposals use HEVC Multiple, selectable video components 3D support Wide Color Gamut, HDR and Scalable Coding in consideration • Lots more on Video in the afternoon sessions Video • Resolutions of up to 3840 × 2160 – Exact matrix of formats under discussion • General agreement on progressive only for UHD resolution • Frame rates of 24, 30 and 60Hz (integer & fractional) – Plus 25Hz and 50Hz for international compatibility (integer) – 120Hz in discussion (integer & fractional) • High dynamic range and wide color gamut are in active discussion and anticipated to be included • SHVC (scalable video) being tested to compare with simulcasting • Aspects of legacy support are in discussion, including SD • Closed Captions work has been separated from video work Audio – Immersive • High spatial resolution in sound source localization in azimuth, elevation, and distance • Increased sense of sound envelopment • Targeted to various devices (fixed, mobile) • Targeted to various speaker set-ups and headphones • Lots more on Audio in the afternoon sessions Audio - Personalization • Selectable, mixable audio components • Control of dialog – hearing impaired can raise dialog level • Alternate audio tracks – alternate language tracks – special commentary and music and effects • Normalization of loudness, contouring dynamic range – based on capabilities of the device and environment Audio – Progress • Call for Proposals was issued – The CfP included details of testing and evaluation for sound quality, codec efficiency and personalization features • Two proposals currently under consideration: – Dolby – MPEG-H Alliance (Fraunhofer, Technicolor, Qualcomm) • Proponents participating in tests as stipulated in the CfP • Full test results expected by late summer Interactivity • Robust App Runtime Environment with HTML5 support • Based on HbbTV 2.0 with restrictions and extensions – HbbTV 2.0 was published earlier this year – 20+ extensions being documented, several based on ATSC: A/105 (aka “ATSC 2.0”), now in Candidate Standard phase – Changes being documented due to ATSC 3.0 IP delivery solution (HbbTV is based on MPEG-2 TS) • Lots more to come on Interactivity in the afternoon sessions Interactivity – Profiles • Working with CEA to bundle features into “profiles” – One or more “Universal Profile(s)” are desired – Advanced Profile(s) and/or Add-on Features are in discussion • Goal is to promote adoption and use by app developers – E.g., knowing which interactive features are supported in all devices vs. some devices • Goal is to simplify receiver implementations – E.g., profiles could require fewer test vectors than “mix & match” implementations Interactivity – a few sample uses • • • • • • • • • Targeted ad insertion On demand content launcher Flexible use of display real estate, aka “screen mash-up” – PiP, tickers, graphics, etc. T-commerce Voting and polling Games News and sports feeds Notifications and reminders The list goes on… Accessibility • Generally agreed closed captions can be its own essence • Recent decision to move closed captions work out of video group and into newly formed Accessibility group • Initial focus: refine closed caption requirements • Contributions will likely be solicited soon • Again, more on this in the afternoon [email protected] Thanks.
