Mammalia Artiodactyla order Cervidae family
Length: Approx.120 to 220cm (approx. 3.9 to 7.2 feet)
Weight: Approx.60 to 300kg (approx. 132 to 661 lbs)
Habitat: Around the Arctic Circle
The reindeer belongs to the cervidae family, and is well known as the
animal said to pull Santa's sleigh. Both male and female reindeer have
antlers, the female's growing in winter and falling off in spring/summer,
and the male's growing in spring and falling off in autumn/winter. They
inhabit the cold tundra of the Arctic Circle, feeding on grasses and
plants in the summer, and in the winter they use their antlers and
hooves to dig through the snow for lichen such as reindeer moss.
Reindeer's bodies feature a thick covering of fur, and large hooves
which have developed that way to ensure they can walk on the snow
without sinking. They are also known for seasonal large-scale
migration that takes place in groups, in search of food.
