Hello my Lovely Friends,
I do hope your lives are beginning to achieve some normalcy after the week of weather chaos and
that you and your family and friends have been blessed with safety through this. It’s a time to
come together, be thankful & help each other out...thank you for letting us be a part of your lives.
Perhaps you are already planning MOTHER’S DAY… we are! We have beautiful Mother’s Day Gift
Cards to be used for anything at all at either the Theatre or Beth’s Emporium at Erina Fair and are
additionally having a HUGE SALE with at least 20% OFF EVERYTHING at both the Theatre and
Beth’s Emporium! That will make for VERY MUCH APPRECIATED GIFTS! As we always do, there
will be a special little ‘thank you’ gift to all women who come to the movies on Mother’s Day.
We’ve had so many of you express your delight that the stunning Russian film LEVIATHAN is
here this week. Golden Globe winner & nominated for an Oscar, LEVIATHAN is a gripping parable
of class, faith and corruption, centering on a dispute between a small-time mechanic and local
authorities that reaps unimaginable, extraordinary consequences. This deftly-drawn and morally
complex thriller is an electrifying, vodka-fuelled examination of the familial, sexual and judicial
tangles of ordinary human lives in Russia. Even Putin doesn’t escape scathing comments on his
regime. Saturated with incredible imagery, superb performances and sly humour, this astounding
& frequently surprising masterwork should, quite simply, not be missed.
The genuinely warm hearted, feel good film BOYCHOIR has our patrons in raptures. It’s about
the power of music, of belonging & the nurture of gifts, starring Dustin Hoffman as a revered
conductor of the famed American Boychoir School, with a wonderful support cast of Kathy Bates,
Josh Lucas (Red Dog), Eddie Izzard and introducing Stet (Garrett Wareing) as a boy angry with
the world. ‘Boychoir soars by grace of its clear narrative, strong cast & the pure harmonious
voices that can only be described as celestial.’(Urbancinefile) You’re going to love BOYCHOIR!
The UN began INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY to build communities, believing Jazz to be a symbol of
unity & peace, encouraging artistic innovation and improvisation, allowing traditional music to
morph into much loved new traditions. You have to love that & we are in! Setting the mood with
our 1930’s wind up gramophone playing old 78’s, we then have the Red Hot Papa’s bringing fine
Dixieland & early Traditional Jazz with music and song like Alexander’s Ragtime Band, Weary
Blues, Tiger Rag & Basin Street Blues. With their eclectic sound including cornet, clarinet, piano,
trombone, banjo, bass guitar, bass & tuba. The film I’ve chosen is one of my favourite early Jazz
films, the 1947 NEW ORLEANS, chronicling the birth and rise to stardom of Jazz with great music
from Louis Armstrong and his band, Billie Holiday, Woody Herman and his band and cameors
from many, many Jazz greats – 29 songs in all! Book for Friday 1st May from 7pm, just $17.95!
New York Met Opera Double - IOLANTA before DUKE BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE! On the heels of
her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another
Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill with the enchanting fairy tale
IOLANTA followed by an erotic psychological thriller – DUKE BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE. Nadja
Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both
operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s.
Saturday 2nd and Monday 4th May, both at 11:30am. $25, Conc $23.
With the black outs, one of our charity events had to be re-scheduled asap and so the ENCORE
Screening of our Art On Screen VINCENT VAN GOGH also needed to be rescheduled to Monday
4th May. Everyone came out of this overjoyed & with much congratulations for the film & our
speaker Jonathan Cooper, formerly the NSW Art Gallery’s Educator & Lecturer. This brilliant film
is made in collaboration with the experts at the Van Gogh Museum; you’ll experience the wonder
of seeing Van Gogh’s legendary masterpieces, while hearing world-renowned curators & art
historians offer their interpretations & explanations with exclusive new research revealing
incredible recent discoveries for the 125th Anniversary of Vincent Van Gogh’s death. ENCORE
SCREENING is on Monday 4th May at 6:45pm. Tickets $23, Sen $19. Tell your friends!
Our new monthly STARS OF THE SILVER SCREEN is quickly growing! QuizMaster Dorian Mode
asks curly questions – with loads of prizes! This month we have the 1953 film BEAT THE DEVIL,
an exquisitely dry comedy with a witty script by Truman Capote. BEAT THE DEVIL finds subtle,
absurdist laughs in the misadventures of Humphrey Bogart's tough customer. With the original
script thrown to the winds, Truman Capote was flown to Ravello, Italy to write as filming
happened, leaving veteran stars Robert Morley & Peter Lorre to create their own dialogue! This is
Gina Lollobrigida’s first English speaking film “Emotionally, I am English," claiming to take tea
and crumpets every afternoon! Held the first Tuesday of each month, fish & chips are available
to order for lunch! STARS OF THE SILVER SCREEN is on Tuesday 5th May at 10am just $12.50.
For a special MOTHER’S DAY TREAT we have previews of the new film A ROYAL NIGHT OUT.
Norman & I so enjoyed this! Set on VE Day 1945 when all London joined together to celebrate the
end of the war, young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret slipped out of the palace to join the
communal euphoria – a rumour not confirmed or denied by the Palace. A wonderful look at the
times and a lot of fun! And remember, there is a special little thank you gift for every woman!
Don’t miss a stunner of a stage play on screen with a stellar cast led by Mark Strong (Imitation
Game) in the ‘magnetic, electrifying, astonishingly bold’ production of A VIEW FROM THE
BRIDGE which is the UK’s top theatre pick. The great Arthur Miller’s work confronts the American
dream in this dark and passionate tale. The visionary Ivo van Hove directs this stunning
production of Miller’s tragic masterpiece, captured live from London’s West End by National
Theatre Live. Saturday 9th and Monday 11th May, both at 11:30am. $25 and $23 Conc
