POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Job title: WASH Coordinator
Location: Kirkuk
CHILD SAFEGUARDING:
Level 3 - the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or
access to children or young people.
ROLE PURPOSE:
In close collaboration with WASH Manager the position holder will responsible for Assessments,
development, planning, managing, supervision and implementation of SCI WASH (Water, sanitation
and hygiene promotion) projects in Kirkuk governorate and surrounding areas which fall under
Kirkuk field office. The position holder will also be responsible for providing support in day to day
logistics, managing budgets for WASH activities, recruitment and capacity building of WASH staff
and representation/coordination within the area of responsibility.
In line with SCI’s dual mandate, the WASH Coordinator will participate in emergency preparedness
training and be prepared to play an active role in WASH sector in response to an emergency
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
Program Support:
1. With support from WASH Manager, carry out WASH assessments in coordination with other SCI
thematic sectors (CP, Education etc.) and/or other external sector agencies, ensuring assessment
findings are documented and that all assessments include a specific analysis of children’s needs.
2. In close collaboration with WASH manager, develop project implementation plans, activity plans and
budgets.
3. With support from WASH Manager, support fundraising for Kirkuk, including contributing to the
development of high quality concept notes and proposals.
4. Spending 75-80% time in the field to ensure quality and impact of WASH interventions.
5. Implement projects as set out in WASH project planning documents, flagging up both successes and
risks to WASH manager in a timely manner.
6. Carry out monitoring and supervision of project activities as agreed in the monitoring and
implementation plan.
7. In collaboration with WASH manager, preparation of WASH program and donor reports on project
activities.
8. Identify project supplies needs and coordinate with the logistics team to ensure materials arrive in
timely manner.
9. Ensure that projects are carried out with participation from all relevant stakeholders, including disaster
affected children and their families.
10.In close collaboration with WASH Manager & Partnership manager providing all type of support to SCI
WASH partners in the area, visiting partner’s activities, review their plans and provide feedback and
support when and where needed.
11.Ensure preparation of standard BOQs & drawings for WASH infrastructure.
12.Ensure WASH activities are integrated with other SC thematic sectors e.g. CP & education.
13.To ensure that the minimum standards of humanitarian relief are maintained in accordance with the
Sphere Charter and Red Cross Code of Conduct.
14.Performing any other relevant task assigned by supervisor.
Reporting Responsibilities:
1. Prepare weekly and monthly reports for WASH sector and sharing it with WASH Manager.
2. Prepare activity and event reports for WASH activities and sharing it with WASH Manager.
3. Updating WASH sector 4W matrix and sharing it with WASH Manager when and where
needed.
Staff Management, Mentorship, and Development
1. Supervise and manage WASH staff in Kirkuk
2. Through support from WASH Manager identify the training needs and capacity building of
WASH staff in Kirkuk.
3. In collaboration with WASH manager ensure staff objective setting and performance appraisal
are done well on time.
Collaboration and Representation
1. Representing SCI at WASH cluster level, UN forums and with relevant government authorities.
2. Keeping close coordination with all WASH partners and relevant government authorities when
and where required.
3. Ensure all the WASH activities are well coordinated with directorate of water, sewerage,
health and municipality in Kirkuk.
Emergency Preparedness and Response
1. Actively participate in emergency preparedness and planning processes at Kirkuk level.
2. In case of emergency, be prepared to contribute to the delivery of an appropriate and timely
response in WASH sector.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
 Graduate/Bachelor degree in Civil, Environmental, public health engineering or equivalent
 Minimum 4 years of working experience, including minimum 2 years of working in WASHrelated humanitarian programs.

Previous experience of working effectively as part of a WASH project team

Auto Cad knowledge and working experience will be an asset



Commitment to capacity building and developing others

Ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports

Excellent communication skills

Strong influencing skills

Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy



The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and
sometimes insecure working circumstances.

Commitment to the aims and principles of SCI in particular, a good understanding of the SCI
mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support
 Oral and written Language skills in Arabic & Kurdish with work English skills
 Ability to work simultaneously with multiple tasks, willingness and ability to work efficiently
with a wide diverse group of people
 Working ability with tight deadlines and in a fast growing program environment
Desirable
 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills & problem solving skills
 Fluent Oral and written English, Kurdish and Arabic languages are desirable.
 Computer literate, knowledge and experience of working on Ms. Excel, word, Power point
& Auto cad and Strong organizational skills.
 Excellent working knowledge of threat assessment, risk mitigation and ability to work on
acceptance strategy at all levels.
 Experience or knowledge of working and living in relevant regions/contexts.
 WASH sector experience.
