About Dharampur
Dharampur is a small hill town full of quaint relics of the British Raj, situated about 1950
meters above sea level and nestling in the Shivaliks,
It is almost midway between the major cities of Chandigarh and Shimla. Kasauli's history can
be traced back to the 17th century when it provided refuge and later a home to uprooted
Rajput families. Later, in 1842, inspired by the crispy cool climate the British converted it into
a cantonment, a status it enjoys even today, thanks to which it remains clean, green and
serene.
Climate
Cotton clothing and light woollens for the summer and heavy woollen garments
for the winter, when it gets quite cold. Books, particularly on birds and a pair
of binoculars are strongly recommended. A pair of comfortable walking shoes is
a must-have as you will probably be doing a lot of walking here.
It may be a good idea to carry basic medicines with you as there aren't many
chemist shops in Dharampur.
Get Around
There is not much for sightseeing in Kasauli as the hill station is low on sights,
but at the top of the list is definitely Monkey Point, named for the Hindu god
Hanuman, a temple to whom marks the spot.
The view from Monkey Point- over the Sutlej River- is stupendous. Other than
that, Kasauli’s two churches- the somewhat unassuming Baptist Church (dating
back to 1922) and the imposing neo -gothic Christ Church, with its stained glass
windows make for an interesting sight and merit a visit.
You can also pay a visit to the Krishna Bhavan Mandir, a temple built in 1926
and as European in appearance as Kasauli’s churches.
Also worth the experience are the walks around Kasa uli- especially along the
Lower Mall and the Upper Mall, and visits to nearby places such as Sabathu, a
quiet cantonment town with an old Gurkha fort; and Dharampur, a picturesque
hamlet that is home to a famous tuberculosis hospital.
If you are an ardent birdwatcher then Kasauli is your paradise for the virgin
pine and deodar forests are teeming with birdlife parrots, humming birds,
flycatchers, minuets, magpies and much more. Get bewitched by the melodious
bird-song resounding in every corner of the tiny, but beautiful hill station of
Kasauli.
Sanawar is just 6kms from Kasauli, and has one of the best schools in the
country. The Lawrence School is almost one hundred -years-old and a major
attraction.
Dagshai, 19 km away is a sun-dappled cantonment town. Spend a few moments
at the cemetery here and then stop off for a picnic in the pristine pine and oak
forests. Totally off the tourist route, you can enjoy some moments of peace and
solitude here.
Do’s
A quiet retreat from the maddening chaos of the busy city life, Kasauli with its
flowers-filled gardens and cobbled streets has a wide ra nge of things to do that
would suit each and every traveller.
Kasauli has some wonderful sightseeing options and a must visit is a Monkey
Point. The view from this point overlooking Sutlej River is breathtaking. If you
derive pleasure in watching birds in their habitat then Kasauli is the place for
you. The pine and deodar forests in the hill station offer a lifetime chance to a
passionate birdwatcher. Marvel at the sights of beautiful churches or pay a visit
to Krishan Bhavan Mandir built in European style.
The hill station offers activities like trekking, paraglidin g, and camping for
adventurous travellers and if that it is too much for you then you can opt for
nature walks around the lush green forests of Kasauli.
Just let the pristine air of this stunning hill station calm and soothe your soul
and rejuvenate you so that you are ready to face the world once back at home.
