TIPS AND
TIDBITS...
• All boys volleyball directors will have a meeting
at 6 p.m. Thursday, May
14, at the Badger Region
office.
• Any athlete requesting to
switch clubs for the remaining indoor season, must
have a release letter from
their original club that approves of the change. This
must be sent to the Region
office before they will be
released in Webpoint.
• Summer memberships
will be available starting
May 1.
No club is like the Pink Panthers.
The one-team boys volleyball organization that
got its start with the 2014-15 season is founded on
three key principles:
1. Working hard
2. Having fun
3. Making a difference
Nowhere in their philosophy does the word
volleyball even come up.
And that’s because, as club founder Lisa Deppe
said, these principles can be applied to any organization sports group, theater department or
traveling team.
“We want to emphasize character building and
developing skills,” Deppe said. “We are trying to
find a way to motivate young people to do something more.”
“It’s not about playing sports,” she said.
How it was founded
The groundwork for the Mukwonago-based
Pink Panthers was built by Deppe and her longtime friend Tanya Pozorski, who battled cancer
for close to 10 years. During the last 4.5 years of
Tanya’s life, she had stage four medastatic breast
cancer that required her to spend much of her
time in hospital rooms.
It was there that the Pink Panthers began to take
shape.
“I wanted to make all that time spent in a
treatment room with her mean something more,”
Deppe said softly.
It was there that they began brainstorming the

River City embraces giving back
with Blankets of Love project
By Brian Sharkey

Sara and Jeremy Wesemann of
Butler, Wis., had a dream — to
make a blanket for each of the
1,400 young children served by
Next Door — an early education
provider in Milwaukee’s most
impoverished neighborhood.
Their vision became a reality thanks to their tremendous
efforts.
They raised thousands of
dollars to purchase material and
organized hundreds of volunteers
to make the blankets.
In 2014, they created the Blankets of Love Project. Each child’s
blanket was handmade by volunteers with materials purchased
through donations to the project.
Kids from birth to 6 years old
benefited from this project.
This year, River City Volleyball
Club players and their families
spent their time helping make
many of these blankets. They
were joined by many volunteers
from the Watertown volleyball
community and the city’s high
school.
The River City Volleyball Club
has chosen a different organization or group for their annual
Give Back Drive. This was the
seventh year of the Give Back
Drive.
In year past, River City has
donated to the Watertown Food
Pantry, organized a food drive for
troops and other various community service projects.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to this week’s Team of the Week, Southwest Milwaukee VBC G15-1s. The
girls have just recently completed a remarkable run to end March into the beginning of April.
They started out by finishing 3rd at the Badger Region Championships in the 15 Open Division. The next weekend they earned a bid to the USAV Girl’s Junior National Championships
in the 15 National Division by winning the Badger Region Qualifier. To top of their magical
run, they went to the Windy City Qualifier in Chicago to compete in the 15 American Division,
winning the tournament with a perfect 10-0 match record and 20-0 set record. Keep up the
good work girls and good luck with the remainder of the season! To nominate your team for
Team of the Week, send information to Ryan Thompson at [email protected]
Voting begins May 1 for Board
The Badger Region will have
voting for its Board of Directors
starting Friday (May 1) and running through Sunday, May 10.
The Badger Region Volleyball
Association, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a 13-member board, has four seats up for
re-election this year:
* Vice President
* Northwest Representative
*Southwest Representative
* At-Large
Current Badger Region members will be receiving an email
in the coming day about how to
vote in this year’s election for
the Board of Directors.
Election winners will be announced by May 13.
To serve on the board, individuals must be a member of
the Badger Region. Our board
currently consists of coaches,
club directors, officials, parents
and spectators — with some
members wearing several different hats.
Candidates for the Vice
President position must have
previously served on the Board.
Candidates for the Southwest
and Northwest Rep positions
must live in that area of the
state. Anyone 18 or over who
did not play on a junior club
volleyball team during the 201415 season may run for the AtLarge Representative position.
The Badger Region Board of
Directors meets four times per
year, normally meeting at the
Region office in Pewaukee, Wis.
For all of the position qualifications and guidelines, please
see the Badger Region by-laws,
found on the website at www.
BadgerVolleyball.org under the
“About” section.
Please contact Jennifer
Armson-Dyer ([email protected]) with any questions
about the upcoming elections.
The next Badger Region
board meeting is Monday, June
8 at 5:30 p.m. at the office in
Pewaukee.
Teaching
players to
be leaders
A prominent topic among
coaches today is the lack of
leadership we see in today’s
athletes. Why aren’t more
players stepping up and taking
charge? One theory is that the
explosion of adult-run youth
sports programs has drastically
reduced the number of players
who take leadership roles.
In the good old days, kids
naturally developed leadership
skills because they picked their
own teams, decided the rules,
determined the lineups, officiated their games and learned
about problem solving from
handling conflicts themselves.
Research tells us that young
people today are often more
concerned with fitting in than
standing out. While all athletes
have been coached to perform
skills, it’s likely that many of
today’s athletes have received
little or no training related to
leadership.
Questionnaire for team
members
1. Define leadership
2. List 3 people you respect
for their leadership ability
(from any phase of your life).
3. List characteristics of these
effective leaders.
4. How do effective leaders
influence your performance?
5. Do effective leaders
influence your self-esteem? If
so, how?
6. Name some rewards of
being a team leader?
7. What are risks associated
with being a team leader?
8. Name some characteristics
of great groups/teams?
9 . What do you think is the
best way to select team leaders/
captains?

idea of helping kids learn about
humanity, learn about the quality
of life and learn about living in
the moment, much like Tanya was
doing in the hospital.
“Our time together was about
having fun and enjoying every
sandwich. Going to lunch, sitting
in the sun or even a simple day
out – small things easily taken for
granted,” Deppe said. “The Pink
Panthers exist to improve the
quality of life for families living
with illness. Giving support and
hope to others – that is the legacy
of our friendship.”
Maybe easier said than done.
But thanks to Lisa’s background
in marketing and her husband’s
expertise in the world of volleyball, things quickly started to
evolve.
“Volleyball is a lifelong endeavor,” Lisa said. “That’s why I like
it so much. So using this sport
is a great place to start for our
mission.”
In college, Lisa was a cross
country runner at the University
of Hawaii, where she met her
future husband, Tom Deppe, a
member of the men’s volleyball
team in the late 1980s.
As a coach, Tom, acts as a
mentor for the athletes, helping
them find their inspiration and
setting goals off the court just as
much as on the court, Lisa said.
How it works
For most families who participate in traveling sports, the word
“fundraising” leaves a bad taste in
everyone’s mouth.
So when Lisa and Tonya were
laying out how the Pink Panthers
would operate, their goal was not
to require kids to have fundraise
to help pay their dues. They
wanted to take their mission of
having kids work to earn a spot
on a team or in an organization
to local businesses and sponsors.
“We wanted our kids to learn
the importance of handshakes
and phone calls,” Lisa said, referencing the influx of time they
spend on video games, texting
and in front of other media. “We
want them to learn more from
the teamwork that this requires.”
With the support of a major

contributor, HD Financial, the
Pink Panthers were able to start
their season off on the right foot.
But in turn, they then required
all of the athletes to work off
their dues and earn their spot on
the team by giving back to the
community.
How they track and work off
their dues is still a work in progress, Lisa said.
But the boys on the team have
worked as servers, dishwashers
and bus boys at the Urban Ecology Center. They have raised money for the Mukwonago ParkWalk
for Cancer. They have shoveled
snow and donated time to the
D.H. Greenwald Center, a cancer
treatment center in Mukwonago.
“It’s not about asking parents
for money for them to play
volleyball,” Lisa said. “It’s about
empowering the kids to do more
and earn a spot on the team.”
The Pink Panthers aren’t
necessarily looking to add teams
to their club, which only offered a
boys 16s team this year.
“We’re looking to share our
model and motivate young people.”
Lisa said.
That way they can assist in
finding businesses that will donate
to the club and then they can start
working off their community service hours in advance, she said.
“It’s just a matter of framing
what we currently do in a new
way,” Lisa said.

Second annual Dale Rohde event a success
On Sunday, April 19, hundred of volleyball players, coaches and
fans came together at Kettle Moraine High School and Center Court
Sports Complex for the second annaul Dale Rohde Memorial Tournament.
The event is a yearly tribute to longtime referee and volleyball enthusiast Dale Rohde who passed away in January of 2014.
In attendance were Dale’s widow Sue, his son Kyle and other friends
and family members.
“It was a real pleasure for me
to watch the 18s final, where
three of Kyle’s high school
teammates and friends helped
the MVC B18 Jake team win
the gold,” Sue said. “Seeing how

leyball is a perfect lifetime sport,
and I’m so glad that Dale’s legacy
includes participating and supporting Badger Region volleyball.”
This year’s tournament again featured silent auction baskets, t-shirt
sales, lanyard sales and, of course, lots of great volleyball.
In the 18s division, Milwaukee Volleyball 18-Jake defeated Milwaukee Sting 17s in the final . At the 16s age level, Southport 16s defeated

the 12/13s age division, Milwaukee Sting 12s defeated Southwest 13s

Two Minnesota clubs (North Country and Minnesota Premiere)
even made the trip to southeast Wisconsin event.
All proceeds from the event go toward promoting boys volleyball
by keeping tournament entry fees low for teams and offering promotional items to all the players as a keepsake for Dale’s memory.
Thank you from the Badger Region to all the teams, coaches,
referees and staff that made this event a success. We look forward to
hosting it again next year.

‘Reaching over the net’ rules explained
This week, we’ll look at two
of the possible outcomes from
our back-row setter scenario of a
couple issues ago — reach-over
by the offense and reach-over by
the defense. These are probably
the most complex and difficult
to understand, as there are many
considerations involved in deciding weather a fault has occurred.
What is permissible regarding reaching beyond the net
when blocking?
Rule 11.1.1 - “In blocking,
a player may touch the ball
beyond the net, provided that
he/she does not interfere with
the opponent’s play before or
during the latter’s attack hit.”
Rule USAV 14.3 – Blocking
the ball beyond the net above
the opponent’s team area shall
be permitted, provided:
a) the block is made after
FROM THE REF STAND
the opponents have hit the ball
in such a manner that the ball
would, in First Referee’s judgment,
clearly cross the net if not touched
by a player, and no member of the
attacking team is in position to
make a play on the ball,
b) The ball is falling near the
net, and no member of the attacking team could, in the First
Referee’s judgment, make a play
on the ball.
So, as you can see, much
depends on the trajectory of the
ball, as well as the position of the
players on the attacking team.
What is permissible in
reaching beyond the net when
attacking?
Rule 11.1.2 - “After an attack
hit, a player is permitted to pass
his/her hand beyond the net,
provided that the contact has
been made within his/her own
playing space.”
Rule 13.3.1 – Faults of the
attack hit - “A player hits the
ball within the playing space of
the opposing team.”
In my experience, this is the
rule that is most misunderstood.
Typically, the setter is playing
an over-pass, reaches beyond the
net, and attempts to bring the
ball back for the hitter. The coach
usually yells, “The ball was in the
plane!” The player’s contact with
the ball must be made within his/
her own playing space. The point
of contact with the ball is the determining factor, not the position
of the ball.
Oh yeah, this last situation
is allowable contact in NCAA
Women’s volleyball. Look for
during the fall season.
