Analogy
Meaning of Analogy
Analogy means ‗Similar items‘. There is three types of Analogy
(a) Number Analogy
(b) Letter Analogy
(c) Word Analogy
Number Analogy
Example 1: 3 : 81 : : 6 : ?
(a) 1296 (b) 1269
(c) 1692 (d) 1926
Solution. (a) n : n4 relation here (3) and (3)4 = (81)
Similarly, (6) and (6)4 = 1296
Letter Analogy
Example 2 : Find the missing term : YWZX : USVT : : MKNL : ?
(a) IGGH (b) IGJH
(c) IGJJ
(d) IGHH
Solution. (b) Alphabets are used in reverse order. In the first term, the order of alphabet is
2, 4, 1 and 3 and in the second term, the order is 6, 8, 5 and 7. So, the missing term is
IGJH.
Word Analogy
Example 3 : Sailor : Ship : : Lawyer : ?
(a) Legal (b) Law
(c) Court (d) Ruling
Solution. (c) ‗Sailor‘ works at ‗Ship‘, similarly ‗Lawyer‘ works at ‗Court‘.
Classification
Alphabet Classification
In this type of classification, a group of jumbled letters, typically consisting a single or two
or three or four letters are put together. The pattern or order in which they are grouped is
to be identified and students need to find out which groups have the same pattern or
relationship between the letters. There will be only one choice, which will have a different
pattern from the rest and hence becomes the answer option.
Example 1: Find the odd one among the following.
(a) LY (b) GU
(c) DQ (d) JW
Solution. (b) Corresponding places in the first half and the second half of letters, except
option (b).
Number Classification
In such questions, students need to choose the odd number from the given options. The
numbers may belong to a particular pattern, i.e., they may be odd, even, prime, rational,
squares, cubes and they may also be coded into binary digits (0 s and 1 s), etc. and only
one of the choices will not follow the same pattern.
Example 2 : Find the odd man out.
(a) 35 (b) 55
(c) 45 (d) 65
Solution. (c) Except option (c) , the remaining are prime products of 5.
Series

(n2 – n) Series
n3 Series
(n3 + 1) Series
(n3 -1) Series
(n3 + n) Series
(n3 – n) Series
Letter Series - Type 1
One Letter Series Such series consists of one letter in each term and this series is based on
increasing or decreasing positions of corresponding letters according to English alphabet.
Example 1: B, C, A, D, Z, E, … F, X, G
(a) U (b) Y
(c) W (d) V
Solution. (b) The sequence consists of two series B, A, Z, Y, X and C, D, E, F, G. The
missing letter is Y.
Letter Series - Type 2
Two Letter Series The first letters of the series follow one logic and the second letters follow
another logic.
Example 2: EZ, DX, CV,..., AR, ZP
(a) CS (b) AM
(c) BT (d) TG
Solution. (c) First and second letters follow a sequence of-1 and -2 respectively.
Letter Series - Type 3
Three Letter Series: :Such series consist of three letters in each term. The first letters follow
one logic, the second letters follow another logic and the third letters follow some other
logic.
Example 3: DIE, XCY, RWS, ...
(a) LQN (b) QMP
FCI CAPSULE 2015
(c) LMS (d) LQM
Solution. (d) First, second and third letters of each group follow a sequence of -6 series.
Letter Series - Type 4
A series of letters is given with one or more missing letters. From the choices, the choice
that gives the letters that go into the blanks has to be selected as answer.
Example 4: In the following series some letters are missing. From the choices, select the
choice that gives that letters that can fill the blanks in the given sequence.
a_ c_ b_ab_a_ca_c
(a) abaccb (b) accbab
(c) aabbcc (d) baccbb
Solution. (d) First of all, notice that there are 6 blanks in the given sequence and each
choice gives six letters to fill the six blank in order. Now, we have to select an alternative
which if placed in the blanks of the series in order, we get a complete series of letters which
follow some particular pattern.
The best way is to try with each option. Inserting the letters of option (d) in place of the
blanks, we get a series like ―abc abc abc abc abc‖ which is a repetition of the group of
letters ―abc‖.
Letter Series - Type 5
Here, students are asked to count how many times a particular letter or group of letters
satisfying some conditions occurs and mark that number as the answer choice.
Example 11: In the following sequence of letters, in how many instances the letters n is
immediately preceded by the letter t ?
snruatnnghjtknstndgclntttnnntntntsmvbtngcxdptnklstnt
(a) 5 (b) 6
(c) 7 (d) 8
Solution. (d) On counting, we find that the letter n occurs 8 times, where n is immediately
preceded by the letter t.
Number, Ranking and Time Sequence Test
Type 1 Number Test
In these types of questions, a number, a set of numbers, series of digit is given and the
candidate is asked to trace out digit following certain given conditions.
Example 1 How many 5s are there in the following number sequence which are immediately
preceded by 7 and immediately followed by 6?
Terms : 7 5 5 9 4 5 7 6 4 5 9 8 7 5 6 7 6 4 3 2 5 6 7 8
FCI CAPSULE 2015
(a) 1
(b) 2
(c) 3
(d) 4
Solution. (a) Here,7 5 5 9 4 5 7 6 4 5 9 8 7 5 6 7 6 4 3 2 5 6 7 8
Preceded by 7 and followed by 6 So, there is only one such 5.
Type 2 Ranking Test
In these types of questions, generally the ranks of a person both from the top and from the
bottom are mentioned and the total number of persons is asked.
Example 2 : A class of boys stands in a single line. One boy is nineteenth in order from both
the ends. How many boys are there in the class?
(a) 27
(b) 37
(c) 38
(d) 39
Solution. (b) Clearly, number of boys in the row = (18 + 18 + 1) = 37
The question can be solved by formula also, total number of boys in the row = 19 + 19 - 1
= 37
Formula Total number of persons in a row or class = (Rank of a person from upper end or
left end) + (Rank of that person from lower or right end) - 1
Inserting the Missing Character
In this chapter questions contain a figure, a set of figures, an arrangement or a matrix,
each of which bears certain characters, be it numbers, letters or a group/combination of
letters/numbers which follow a particular pattern. You are required to identify and decipher
this pattern and accordingly find the missing character in the figure.
Example 1:
(a) 7
(b) 25
(c) 49
(d) 129
Solution. (b) The pattern is
(16 – 6)2 + (5 – 2)2 = 102 + 32 = 109
(22 – 15)2 + (21 – 19)2 = 72 + 22 = 53
So, the missing number = (17 – 13)2 + (51 – 48)2 = 42 + 32 = 25
Example 2:
FCI Capsule 2015. 8
FCI CAPSULE 2015
(a) 45
(b) 50
(c) 60
(d) 63
Solution. (d) Moving clockwise direction, the numbers are 13 – 1 = 0, 23 – 1 = 7, 33 – 1 =
26 and 43 – 1 = 63
Example 3:
(a) 9
(b) 18
(c) 24
(d) 27
Solution. (a) Starting from 3 and moving clockwise, the number in each quadrant is the
square of that in the previous quadrant. So, the missing number = 32 = 9
Arithmetical Reasoning
First we should know some mathematical operations. They are add (+), subtraction (–),
multiply (×) and division (÷), greater than (>), less than (<). This test is set up to test
candidates skill in mathematical operations. The questions involving these operations are
set using artificial symbols. You are required to substitute the real
signs and solve the questions accordingly, to get the answer
Different Type of Questions
There are three types of questions based on mathematical operations which are asked in
various competitive examinations. They are, Problem-Solving by Substitution
In such type of questions you have some substitutes for various mathematical symbols or
numerals followed by a question involving calculation of an expression or choosing the
correct/incorrect equation.

Example 2: If signs + and –and numbers 4 and 8 interchanges with each other, which one
of the following four equations would be correct?
(a) 4 – 8 + 12 = 0 (b) 8 – 4 ÷ 12 = 8
(c) 4 ÷ 8 – 12 = 16 (d) 8 ÷ 4 – 12 = 24
Solution. (a) On interchanging signs + and – and numbers 4 and 8 in equation (a)
8 + 4 – 12 = 0
12 – 12 = 0

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
Indian History
The Indian History is perhaps the
oldest in
the world, and the sources of Indian
History are
the verbal history, because our
ancients never did bother about
putting things down on paper and
archaeological evidences. Based on
the evidences available today, Indian
History, like the history of every
ancient culture in the world, is broadly
divided into four periods as mentioned
below:
Pre-History
From the big bang, the primeval
swamp to the Indus Valley civilization.
FCI Capsule 2015. 10
FCI CAPSULE 2015
Though Indus Valley civilization is
included in pre-historical period.
However, technical evidences shows
that Indus Valley civilization did have
a script, although it has not been
decoded yet. So, it is generally
included in Ancient History nowadays.
Ancient History
Indian civilization is the oldest
civilization in the
world. Even India came before
Greece, considered the oldest
civilization before the discovery of
Mohenjodaro and Harappa. The main
features of Ancient Indian History are
as follows:
It begins from the Indus Valley
civilization (for which the date is a
matter of hot debate, but historians
have agreed to disagree on 3000 BC)
to just after the king Harsha
Vardhana, which is around 700-800
BC.
Indus Valley Civilization
Medieval History
dating, it spread from the year 23501750.
It begins from 800 BC to mid-18th
century AD.
Modern History
Frommid-18th century to the
independence
of India, which is on August 15, 1947.
The history of Modern India is farther
sub-divided into two major periods:
1. The British Period.
2. The India Freedom Struggle and
Partition of
India.
ANCIENT INDIA
The discovery ofMohenjodaro and
Harappa
by British archeologist: Marshall
proved that
Discovery: In 1921, R.B. Dayaram
Sahani,
first discovered Harappa, in the
Montgomery district of the Punjab.
According to radio-carbon
Indus Valley Civilization Dr. R. D.
Banerjee found the ancient city
Mohenjodaro (literally,‗cityofthe
dead‘)inLarkana
district of Sindh, now in Pakistan in
1922.
The Marvelous Town Planning of
Mohenjodaro: A chief feature of
Mohenjodaro
is its superb town planning. The
streets, which
divided the city into neat rectangular
or square
blocks, varied in width but
alwaysintersected each other at right
angles. The city had an elaborate
drainage system, consisting of
horizontal and vertical drains,street
FCI Capsule 2015. 11
FCI CAPSULE 2015
drains and so on. The architecture of
the buildings was clearly intended to
be functional and minimalist, and
certainly not to please the aesthete.
Mohenjodaro was obviously
a cosmopolitan city, with people of
different races mingling with the local
populace-ProtoAustroloid,
Mediterranean, Alpine and Mongoloid.
The Indus Valley Civilization
Before the coming of Aryans, there
was a
civilization that was not only welldeveloped, but actually far more
sophisticated than that of the Aryans.
The Indus Valley civilization said its
last hurray roughly in 2200 BC. The
beginning and end of the Indus Valley
Civilization are both a matter of
debate because people could not have
emerged complete with their perfect
town planning, neat houses, lovely
jewellery and loads of make-up. So
where did they come from? and then
having come, just where did they
disappear?
Popular theory, which is most
accepted is that
the people of the Harappan civilization
were
chased out by the Aryans and went
down south.
The present South Indians are their
descendants

History of Planning in India
FCI Capsule 2015. 15
FCI CAPSULE 2015

First attempt to initiate economic planning in India was made by Sir M.Visvesvarayya, a
noted engineer and politician in 1934 through his book ‗Planned Economy For India‘.

In 1938 ‗National Planning Commission‘ was set-up under the chairmanship of J.L. Nehru
by the Indian National Congress. Its recommendations could not be implemented because
of the beginning of the Second World War and changes in the Indian political situation.

In 1944 ‗Bombay Plan‘ was presented by 8 leading industrialists of Bombay.

In 1944 ‗Gandhian Plan‘ was given by S. N. Agarwal.

In 1945 ‗People‘s Plan‘ was given by M. N. Roy.

In 1950 ‗Sarvodaya Plan‘ was given by J. P. Narayan. A few points of this plan were
accepted by the Government.
The Planning Commission

The Planning Commission was set up on March 15, 1950 under the chairmanship J.L.
Nehru, by a resolution of Union Cabinet.

It is an extra-constitutional, non-statutory body.

It consists of Prime Minister as the ex-officio Chairman, one deputy-Chairn appointed by
the PM and some full time members.

The tenure of its members and deputy chairman is not fixed. There is no defi definition of
its members also. They are appointed by the Government on its c discretion. The number
of members can also change according to the wishes of Government.
Functions

Assessment of material, capital & human resources of the country.

Formulation of plans for the most effective & balanced utilization of country‘s resources.

To determine the various stages of planning and to propose the allocation of resources on
the priority basis.

To act as an advisory body to the Union Government.

To evaluate from time to time the progress achieved in every stage of the plan and also to
suggest remedial measures.

To advise the Centre and the State Governments from time to time on special matters
referred to the Commission.
National Development Council
FCI Capsule 2015. 16
FCI CAPSULE 2015

All the plans made by the Planning Commission have to be approved by National
Development Council first. It was constituted to build co-operation between the States and
the Planning Commission for economic planning.

It is an extra-constitutional and extra-legal body.

It was set up on August 6, 1952, by a proposal of the Government. The PM is the exofficio chairman of NDC. Other members are Union Cabinet ministers, Chief‘ Ministers &
Finance Ministers of all States, Lt. Governors of Union Territories and Governors of
Centrally Ruled States.
State Planning Boards

Apex planning body at State level is generally a State Planning Body comprising the Chief
Minister as Chairman, Finance and Planning ministers of that State and some technical
experts.

District Planning Committee is also there comprising both official and non-official
members.
Numerical Aptitude
Fractions
A fraction is a part of the whole (object, thing, region). It forms the part of basic aptitude of
a person to have and idea of the parts of a population, group or territory. Candidate must
have a feel of ‗fractional‘ thinking. eg, , here ‗12‘ is the number of equal part into which the
whole has been divided, is called denominator and ‗5‘ is the number of equal parts which
have been taken out, is called numerator.
Indices and Surds
Indices
In the expression xn, n is called the exponent or index and x is called the base and xn is
read as ‗x to the power of n‘ or ‗x raised to the power n‘.
eg,
1. 36 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 729

Surds
If n is a positive integer and ‗a‘ is a positive rational number (a > 0), then n√ais called a surd
of order n or nth order surd n√aif is an irrational number.
Square Root & Cube Root
Square Root
The square root of a number is that number the product of which itself gives the given
number, ie, the square root of 400 is 20, the square root of 625 is 25.
The process of finding the square root is called evaluation. The square root of a number is
denoted by the symbol √ called the radical sign. The expression ―√9‖ is read as ―root time‖,
―radical nine‖ or ―the square root of nine‖.
Cube Root
The cube root of a number is that number the cube of which itself gives the given number
ie, the cube root of 64 is 4. The cube root of a number is denoted by the symbol 3√ The
expressions 3√8 read as ―cube eight‖, or the ―cube root of eight‖.
Simplification
In simplification of an expression there are certain laws which should be strictly adhered to.
These laws are as follows:
‗VBODMAS‘ Rule
This rule gives the correct sequence in which the mathematical operation are to be executed
so as to find out the value of a given expression.
Here, ‗V‘ stands for Vicnaculum (or Bar), ‗B‘ stands for ‗Brcket‘, ‗O‘ stands for ‗Of‘, ‗D‘ stands
for ‗Division‘, ‗M‘ stands for ‗Multiplication‘, ‗A‘ stands for ‗Addition‘ and ‗S‘ stand for
‗Subtraction‘.
(a) Here, ‗VBODMAS‘ gives the order of simplification. Thus, the order of performing the
mathematical operations in a given expression are
First : Virnaculum or line bracket or bar
Second: Bracket
Third: Of
Fourth: Division
Fifth: Multiplication
Sixth: Addition &
FCI Capsule 2015. 18
FCI CAPSULE 2015
Seventh: Subtraction
The above order should strictly be followed.
(b) There are four types of brackets.
(i) Square brackets [ ]
(ii) Curly brackets { }
(iii) Circular brackets ( )
(iv) Bar or Virnaculum –
Thus, in simplifying an expression all the brackets must be removed in the order ‗–‘, ‗( )‘, ‗{
}‘ and ‗[ ]‘.
HCF & LCM
Highest Common Factor
The highest common factor of two or more given numbers is the largest of their common
factors. It is known as GCD also.
eg, Factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20
Factors of 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36
Here greatest and common factor of 20 and 36 is 4.
:-> HCF of 20 and 36 is 4.
Least Common Multiple
The least common multiple of two or more given numbers is the least of their common
multiples.
eg, Multiple of 25 are 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, ..
Multiple of 30 are 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, ..
Here 150 is least common multiple of 25 and 30
:-> LCM of 25 and 30 is 150.
Percentage
‗Per cent‘ means ‗per hundred‘. It is given by % symbol. Here x% means x per hundred .
Thus, any percentage can be converted into an equivalent fraction by dividing it by 100.
Simple Interest
Interest
It is the sum which is paid by the borrower to the lender for using the money for a specific
time period. The money borrowed is called the Principal. The rate at which the interest is

English Test Paper
Directions—(Q. 1–10) Read the following passage carefully and answer the
questions given below it. Certain words/phrases have been printed in bold to help
you locate them while answering some of the questions. Once upon a time, there
was a royal elephant which used to reside in the premises of the king‘s palace. The
elephant was very dear to the king, so he was well-fed and well-treated. There was
also a Dog who lived near the Elephant‘s shed. He was very weak and skinny. He
was always fascinated by the smell of rich sweet rice being fed to the royal
elephant. One day, the Dog could no longer resist the aroma of the rice and
somehow managed to sneak into the Elephant‘s shed. He ate the grains of sweet
rice that fell from the Elephant‘s mouth. He liked the rice so much, that he started
going there daily to eat the rice. For days, the huge Elephant didn‘t notice the small
dog as he was busy enjoying the delicious food.
Gradually, the Dog grew bigger
and stronger eating such rich food. Finally, the Elephant noticed him and allowed
him access to the food.
The Elephant enjoyed the company of the Dog and started sharing his food
with him. They also started spending time with each other and soon became good
friends. They ate together, slept together and played together. While playing, the
Elephant would hold the Dog in his trunk and swing him back and forth. Soon
neither of them was happy without the other. They became great friends and didn‘t
want to be separated from each other.
Then one day, a man saw the Dog and
asked the Elephant-keeper, ―I want to buy this Dog. What price do you want for it
?‖ The Elephant-keeper didn‘t own the Dog but sold it and extracted a sum of
money from this deal. The man took the Dog to his home village, which was quite
far away. The King‘s Elephant became very sad after this incident. He missed his
friend a lot and started neglecting everything. He didn‘t want to do anything
without his dear friend, so he stopped eating, drinking and even bathing. Finally,
the Elephant-keeper reported this to the King; however he didn‘t mention anything
about the Dog. The King had a wise minister, who was known for his keen
understanding of animals. The King ordered the minister, ―Go to the Elephant shed
and find out the reason for the Elephant's condition‖. The intelligent minister went
to the Elephant shed and found the Elephant very sad. He examined the Elephant
and asked the Elephant-keeper. ―There is nothing wrong with this Elephant‘s body,
FCI Capsule 2015. 24
FCI CAPSULE 2015
then why does he look so sad ? I think this Elephant is grief stricken, possibly due
to the loss of a dear friend. Do you know if this Elephant shared a close friendship
with anyone ?‖ The Elephant-keeper said, ―There was a Dog who used to eat, sleep
and play with the Elephant. He was taken by a stranger three days ago‖. The
minister went back to the King and said, ―Your majesty, in my opinion, the royal
Elephant is not sick, but he is lonesome without his dear friend, the Dog‖. The King
said, ―You‘re right, friendship is one of the most wonderful things of life. Do you
know where that Dog is ?‘
The Minister replied, ―Elephantkeeper has informed me that a stranger took
him away and he doesn‘t know his whereabouts‖. The King asked, ―How can we
bring back my Elephant‘s friend and make him happy again ?‖ The Minister
suggested, ―Your Majesty, make a declaration, that whoever has the dog that used
to live at the royal Elephant‘s shed will be penalized‖. The King did the same and
the man who had taken the dog, instantly turned him loose when he heard the
proclamation. As soon as he was freed, the Dog ran back as fast as he could to the
Elephant‘s shed. The Elephant was so delighted to see the Dog that he picked his
friend up with his trunk and swung him back and forth. The Dog wagged his tail,
while the Elephant‘s eyes sparkled with happiness. The King was content to see the
Elephant happy once again and rewarded the minister for his wise judgement.
