2015 A WEAVING ODYSSEY INSTRUCTORS
PAT CAROTHERS – Columbus, Indiana
I’m totally hooked! I began weaving over 20 years ago and was immediately fascinated by not only the process
of weaving, but also the beauty of the craft. I’ve been teaching classes locally and at conventions and retreats for several
years. I weave all types of baskets and love all of them…well, maybe ribbed baskets and I don’t have quite a loving
relationship! I continue to learn and I am so thrilled to be a part of Central Pennsylvania’s Weaving Odyssey. I am looking
forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones!
CHAR CIAMMAICHELLA – Aurora, Ohio
Char has been weaving for almost 20 years and teaching for the last ten years. She weaves mainly with reed and
loves playing with color placement to get many different and interesting patterns. She teaches at home, at guild
gatherings and many weaving conventions. She loves teaching and passing down the weaving techniques to all of her
students. Char is constantly trying new techniques, colors and ideas! Char has been the coordinator for WinterWeave
Conference the last 17 years. Char sells basket kits and basket related jewelry on her website: www.charsweavings.com.
BONNIE GALE – Norwich, New York
Bonnie Gale has been a professional traditional willow basketmaker and willow artist for the past 31 years. Her
baskets are part of the collections at Plimoth Plantation and Mount Vernon Estate. In 1999, she was awarded an Artist’s
Fellowship from New York Foundation for the Arts. Her living willow installations have been featured in Vogue, Vogue
Living, House and Garden and Fiber Arts magazines. In 2009, her work was featured in the PBS “Cultivating Life” series,
and in 2010, she appeared on the Martha Stewart show. She was featured in the new public television series Artist Café
which aired locally in October 2013. She produced her first book: Living Willow Form in 2014. Her main web site is
www.bonniegale.com.
PAM KING – Mechanicsville, Maryland
Pam comes to us from Southern Maryland, just south of Washington, D.C. on the western shore of the
Chesapeake Bay. She spent her career as a county Extension agriculture agent, but has been exploring her more artistic
side teaching basketry for about ten years. Pam enjoys making all kinds of baskets and other 3-dimensional fiber art,
experimenting and trying new materials and techniques.
SHARON KLUSMANN – Tallmadge, Ohio
Sharon Klusmann has been weaving, designing and teaching basketry for 29 years. Her website:
www.SharonKlusmann.com has seven pages of her original designs. She not only teaches basketry from her home studio
in Tallmadge, Ohio, but at national conventions and guilds throughout the country. She has had three of her designs
featured in Create and Decorate Magazine in partnership with her friend, Barbara Bunsey, who creates the painting
designs for these baskets. Sharon is also author of her “Business in a Basket” to help others who love basket weaving
turn their passion into a successful teaching business.
DEBRA ROBERSON – Hallam, Pennsylvania
Deb made her first basket in 1985. The Basket Bug bit and her life changed forever. A few months later, Deb
left her full-time executive position to become a full-time basket weaver. She spent the next 20+ years traveling the
East Coast exhibiting at Art Shows where she was recognized with various awards. In more recent years, Deb has gone
from the production weaver to a more artistic weaver, focusing mostly on smaller and more detailed weaving. Deb's
material of choice is waxed linen thread.
10
JUDITH SAUNDERS – Norfolk, Virginia
Judith Saunders, a Virginia and North Carolina resident, is a retired art educator. Her interest in weaving threedimensional forms began in a workshop with Shereen LaPlantz in the early eighties. While traditional basketry
techniques can be seen in her work, Judith leans toward non-traditional materials and more sculptural than functional
forms with copper and hand-painted papers being her materials of choice.
Judith is a juried professional member of the Artisans Center of Virginia and is currently a member of the
National Basketry Organization, the Handweavers Guild of America, as well as several regional associations and guilds.
Her artwork is included in the Plaited Basketry with Birch Bark book by Flo Hoppe, Vladimir Yarish and Jim Widess in the
section featuring contemporary basket makers. Judith has taught bias plaiting workshops in Virginia, North Carolina and
Pennsylvania.
KATHY TESSLER – Howell, Michigan
I LOVE teaching basketry! My goal as a teacher is to fill my students’ heads with as many tips and techniques as I
possibly can during a class. Of course, I hope that they leave class with a basket that they really love.
I have specialized in double base/double wall baskets for many years and have LOTS of patterns available for my
designs in basketry shops and online. I also design totes that feature my leather handles.
I love weaving with ash on a Shaker cathead mold and a square mold that my husband designed. My students
have been enthusiastic about adding these treasures to their collections.
I have taught at every AMB convention since 1987. I also teach at several other conventions and gatherings
nationwide.
ANGIE WAGNER – Kempton, Pennsylvania
Angie Wagner was raised in a very rural section of Berks County, Pennsylvania. She continues to try to live as
close to nature as possible. Inspired by the patterns and colors she sees every day, she works to create symmetry in
contemporary forms from chaotic natural materials. Angie grows and harvests many of the accents used in her work,
which led to the name Woven Branch Designs. She specializes in round reed work and gourd art, but is always exploring
new materials and techniques. Operating The Country Seat, Inc. with her parents, Bill and Donna, keeps Angie immersed
in the basketry world every day.
LAURA LEE ZANGER – Augusta, Georgia
Laura Lee Zanger has been designing baskets and writing patterns since October 2000. She has been teaching on
the basketry convention circuit since 2002 and enjoys expressing her creativity in Cherokee, Choctaw and Chitimacha
twill designs. She travels the country teaching Southeastern Native American twill techniques and shares her excitement
and enthusiasm for weaving with everyone she encounters while maintaining the fascination of a child with every new
idea, lesson and experience.
Laura Lee has also written basketry poems, instructional books and a novel. Her goal is to enlighten everyone on
the thrill of twill weaving in the Native American tradition of the single and double woven baskets.
