New Red eNeRGIZed BY High quality Bayferrox „New Red“ pigments suitable for the most demanding red iron oxide applications worldwide. CHINA SHANGHAI NINGBo LANXeSS INoRGANIc PIGmeNtS IS BuILdING A New PLANt IN NINGBo/chINA early in 2016, LANXeSS Inorganic Pigments will launch the New Red range of iron oxides manufactured using a comprehensively improved Penniman production process. the new, purpose built, manufacturing plant for New Red is located in Ningbo, china, in the Ningbo Petrochemical economic & technological development Zone (NPedZ), one of the largest and most modern chemical parks in the world. the focus of this new facility will be the manufacture of highly saturated, bright, yellow-shade reds. by-products. For example, process optimization will lead to a significant reduction of generated carbon dioxide equivalents. Remaining residues will be processed in a nitric acid recovery plant and be re-used as raw material. The traditional Penniman Red process leads to the generation and emission of laughing gas. Since nitrous oxide cannot be converted to nitric acid, an additional treatment is necessary. A special catalyst will be employed to convert the laughing gas to naturally occurring nitrogen gas, oxygen and water. Our very innovative process will not only produce high quality pigments with unique color properties, it will be also be the first sustainable Penniman Red production process with exhaustive recycling and treatment of all The plant is designed for the production of 25,000 metric tons of red iron oxide per year. In addition, a mixing and milling operation will bring the total capacity in Ningbo to approximately 70,000 metric tons per annum. 2 LANXeSS NEW RED coLoR SPAce of New Red Iron oxide red pigments are produced globally by different production processes. the Laux and copperas processes use high temperatures in oxidizing conditions to convert source materials to the desired red shade. In the Penniman Red process, a well-defined hematite seed is grown in the presence of steel, ferrous nitrate and air. Due to the inherent chemical structure of red iron oxide and challenges in production, the range of shades which can be achieved which offer both high red values (a*) and high yellow values (b*) has traditionally been limited. New Red will utilize innovative process developments and control combined with careful raw material selection to produce the reddest iron oxide red pigments. b* Extended New Red color space Regular Penniman Process Copperas Process Our extensive research has Laux led to a very deep understanProcess a* ding of the process and mechanisms required to tightly control the typical color development curve of the process. This has resulted in the saturation and brightness without compromising in terms of development of New Red pigments which exhibit optimum sustainability, energy efficiency or water conservation. New Red PIGmeNtS wIth outStANdING PRoceSS quALItY the extraordinary color development of New Reds is indicated by examining the pure pigment powder. An example of New Red pigment made using the upgraded Penniman process is shown on the left hand side above. the right side shows a typical bright yellow-shade red. New Red pigments will be subjected to intensive milling to ensure that they contain a low amount of aggregates and can therefore be easily processed by our customers. The viscosity course of coating formulations containing high loadings of New Red are approximately Newtonian in behavior. This enables greater versatility during production. Furthermore the pigments show good color stability even when using bead mills.
