From the Principal’s Desk
This is our last newsletter for the term. Time goes quickly when you enjoy the ups and downs of your
work!
We were very fortunate to have eleven of our Year 5 students spend 10 days at the Department of
Education owned Somers Camp. Some of you probably attended during your primary school years and
have fond memories of the time spent there. Mr. Hannah enjoys it so much he volunteered to attend as a
supervising teacher. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that Mr. Hodgson had also volunteered to
be there! This opportunity is available every two years however the time of year varies. The adventure
activities are so good it seems the weather is insignificant. I’d just rather do canoeing in summer!
As you will see from the calendar, the last two weeks will be very busy. Added to this, the staff will be
saying farewell to Coral Lloyd after a long association with our school. We would have loved to have had
a function to see her off in style however at her request; it will be a very low key staff morning tea. Coral’s
last day will be Thursday 26th March so if you want to drop in to wish her all the best, I suspect she will be
ensconced in the Library.
This past week has been sad with the news of Jodie Walsham’s passing from a motor bike accident last
weekend. The family and particularly Dayna and Reece have our sympathy. The school and community
have offered assistance in any way possible.
Our School Chaplain, Peter Sellars has made himself known to the students via classroom visits and
supervising activities in the playground. Some have asked to speak with him and we will follow the usual
procedure of enabling the children to have a visit however letting parents know of the visit. Sometimes it
is just out of curiosity as to the games he has in his office or because their friend has been to see Peter.
Remember that Peter is also available for parents who might like some advice or just an ear to share
concerns we all have at different times of our life.
Our first School Council Meeting for the year will be held in the staffroom tonight. The Finance
Subcommittee will meet at 7 p.m. and the School Council Meeting will follow at 7:30. As always, you are
welcome to attend. There are also four subcommittees – Finance, Education, Buildings and Grounds and
Health Promotion. School Council members choose to lead one of the subcommittees however we do
need other parent representatives. Meetings are held at a time that is most convenient for the group. Last
year the Education subcommittee met after school once a month. Please let me know if you would like to
assist by “having a say in this way” on any committee.
Once again I need to remind parents to ensure all clothing is clearly named. We have great difficulty
deciphering washed out names which had been written in pen. Please use an iron on label, laundry
marker or puff paint so the jackets that will be required in a couple of weeks can be returned to their
owners. Any unnamed items will be washed and available as second hand uniform.
The Walk to School Day was a HUGE success. 309 student or 91% of students were active travellers.
We didn’t count the parents! Thank you to Miss Reilly and her class for the organisation and also the staff
members and parents who participated. We all enjoyed it so much I think we need to put it on the
calendar once a term. What a great demonstration of the B.N.P.S. community spirit.
This week is Cultural Diversity Week. The children have done some fantastic work in the Art Room with
Mrs. Dijk. Some of it is on display in the agora and is certainly worthwhile stopping to have a look. The
slogan is Different Individuals Valuing Each other Regardless of Skin Intellect Talents or Years.

RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY
Last Friday we celebrated “Ride to School Day” and it was great to
see so many students riding or walking to school. The teachers
joined the groups at various intervals outside the school and
walked to school with the students, while Mr Gamble donned his
helmet and also rode his bike.

We hope that children will continue to ride in this beautiful Autumn
weather to reduce traffic congestion while also maintaining their
fitness.
Photo Day Tuesday March 24.
Each child will have received a photo envelope. Please complete
and return these envelopes to school if you wish to purchase a
class and or individual student photo.
If you would also like a family photo please ask your child to
collect another Family photo envelope from the office or pop in
yourself and collect an envelope and complete the necessary
details.
It is very important that all envelopes are returned before Photo
Day to ensure the correct photos are taken on the day.

National Day of Action against
Bullying and Violence
The fifth National Day of Action against Bullying and
Violence will be held on Friday, 20 March 2015.
This annual day provides a focus for all schools to say
Bullying. No Way! and to strengthen our existing
everyday messages that bullying and violence at school
are not okay at any time.
During this day our students will be involved in various
activities designed to reinforce this positive behaviour
message.
We ask that children wear casual clothes which
heightens the message that “difference is OK” and
never an excuse to treat others without respect.
Children are also asked to bring a gold coin donation
which goes to support the Alannah and Madeline
Foundation, and the students who participate will
receive a wrist band to help celebrate the event.
Stolen Bike
A white BMX bike was stolen from the gym foyer on
Wednesday March 11.
If you have any information about this bike please contact
the school.

Chaplain’s News
PTFA NEWS
Hi Everyone,
I still can’t believe that 1st term ends at the end of next week.
I hope that all the holiday plans are in place and eagerly look
forward to hearing the exciting stories of what happened
during the break.
This is an exciting time of the year as footy season also
begins in a few weeks, you might say that it has already
begun with the NAB Cup, but I am talking about the real
season! “Go the Mighty Hawks”
I am gradually settling into the school routine and over the
last couple of weeks I have been familiarizing myself with as
many children as possible by going into classes throughout
the school. Several children have already indicated that they
used to see the previous chaplain on a regular basis. So if
you would like me to meet up with your child on a regular
basis for a chat, you can obtain a permission form from
either myself or from the office.
Just a reminder that my hours at the BNPS are as follows:
 Monday: 8.45am till 4.15pm
 Wednesday: 8.45am till 4.15pm
Our Easter Raffle donations are looking great with some
fantastic looking prizes, we will continue to take donations
right up to Wednesday 25th March. 10 raffle tickets were
distributed to families last week, tickets are 0.50c each. If
you wish to purchase more tickets please see the office staff.
The raffle will be drawn on Friday 27th March at 2.00pm there will be a 2 prize limit to each family.
Easter food means lots of Chocolate and Hot Cross Buns - to
show support and appreciation to our local Bakers Delight
Store Kilsyth (for our fantastic bread donation at the mini
fete) we are running a Hot Cross Bun Fundraising Drive.
Notices and Order forms will be given out on Monday 16th
March.
The Easter Raffle and Hot Cross Bun Drive are our first 2
fundraisers for the year and complete our term 1 fundraising
calender. Term 2 will see some exciting events and we look
forward to your continued support.
Our next PTFA meeting is Wednesday 18th March at 9.05am
in the staff room
Please feel free to come along we are always looking for
new members and ideas.

weekly times at BNPS, please don’t be shy from coming up
and saying hello. If you need to chat to me urgently outside

Before School / After School Care
Program
Program Update
My goodness, in the last newsletter I was talking about what a wonderful first month we have had
at After School Care and here I am now talking about the end of the term. Term 1 has gone so
quickly and has been simply wonderful. It has been a happy and productive term indeed.
Thank you to everyone for your help in making our transition into 2015 easy. The parents have
helped in so many ways and the children all settled back beautifully. The Preps and new children
are very much at home in our program. The children who attended previously have done very well
looking after our new friends. They have been buddies and have been very attentive as they have
helped others to feel a part of our After School Care Family.
Sometimes we think that we simply have fun at After School Care but when we look at what we have achieved already this year,
it is quite amazing. This term we have made pikelets, fruit kebabs, sandwiches, fruit salad with yoghurt, trifle and funny food
plates. We have made ‘About Me’ posters and ‘Wall of Fame’ pictures. We have made special name tags that look fantastic
outside our room. We have made box constructions and box people and we have built buildings using blocks and Jenga as well
as cars, trains and trucks using Mobilo. We have played with the train sets, cars, car mats and tracks. We have made and flown
many paper planes and used clever problem solving ideas along the way. We have played with the Doll’s Houses and have made
some furniture with boxes. We have loved the Home Corner and all of the new equipment – particularly the cash register with
microphone. We have made office and restaurant play great fun and have created many games where we have role-played
numerous different characters. We have played many new board games and had great fun opening lots of boxes with secret
treasures in. We have not yet started to use the new craft items we have received – maybe we will simply have anothert Art
Extravaganza in the future.
We have really enjoyed the new Air Hockey Table and the many new pieces of sports equipment given to us. We thoroughly
enjoy playing outside together and have had many cricket matches, basketball fun, sandpit creativity and playground equipment
activities.
We have worked together to start to make a wonderful Beach Mural on the large glass sliding door and hope it will be finished
before the end of term. The children painted “sand” and “the sea” on clear contact that we then put onto the glass. We made
many colourful Beach Boxes (so many children enthusiastically did this) for the sand and are now making sea creatures, beach
goers, boats etc. and of course a Combie Van. When it is finished it will be spectacular.
Wow, what a great time we have at After School Care. Please come in and see our room. You are invited to come in and say
“HELLO” or come in to ask about our program and the enrolment procedure. We have some pamphlets with information about
enrolling children and the booking and cancellation process. Enrolments are completed online at www.oshclub.com.au.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ON THE LAST DAY OF TERM 1 WE ARE OPEN WHEN THE CHILDREN FINISH AT 2:30
and of course will have our favourite end of the term treat of hot chips.

IMPACT Neighbour Day
Thursday March 19
Glen Park Community Centre.
3pm to 7pm
This event hopes to provide the opportunity for people from Bayswater North to explore and connect with a range of
organisations that service their community and directly address the social and economic barriers many in their
community face.
The event starts at 3pm with a range of adult and children’s activities and workshops being hosted throughout the
centre as well as live music from 3pm to 7pm in the café and on the outdoor stage.
Apart from the expo of services, workshops include:
Budget cooking - an interactive workshop hosted by Gracehope (ingredients will also be provided to participants to
cook the meal at home).
Potting station in the Community Garden where herb & vegetable seedlings will be provided for people to pot up and
take home to grow.
Fashion Show promoting low cost, high quality clothing suitable for job interviews and work and modelled by
SCOPE and other participants.
Mini Makeovers – hair and make-up provided by KYM.
Reiki – provided by Nicole Van’t Foort (GPCC & Reiki Studio).
Woodworking in the Community Shed
Didgeridoo making (Stax the Didgeman), Face painting, Fitness Fun, Chalk play and Toy Library
Live music in the café features Tracey Roberts, Stewart Kohinga and Neesy Smith and instrumentalist, Nathan
Varga.
Live music on the outdoor stage features Lloyd Spiegel and Up, Up Away.

FLAIR SCHOOL OF DANCE
New Students Welcome at Flair School of Dance!
Flair is all about Fun and learning to dance in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
We hold classes here at Bayswater North Primary School on Wednesday nights in the school hall.
Class times are as follows:
Juniors: Kinder, Prep and Grade 1 from 3.45pm – 4.30pm
Intermediates: Grades 2, 3 and 4 from 4.30pm – 5.30pm
Sub Seniors: Grades 5 and 6 from 5.30pm – 6.30pm
Seniors: High School from 6.30pm – 7.30pm
Class prices $7 per week, payable per school term. Classes do not run on school holidays.
You can turn up any week and your first class is FREE when you come to try out our school.

RE: Youth Led Design Work for the Dandenong Creek Trail Upgrades Project
Project Update
Late in 2014 students from Grade 5 and 6 took part in an Ideas Competition held by Maroondah City Council through CoDesign Studio's Youth
Led Design program to design projects for the improvement of parkland along the Dandenong Creek Trail.
Following this, a design jury was held to select winning ideas that could go on to become built projects along the creek.
We wish to congratulate all students who submitted ideas for the inventiveness and quality of their work, and make special mention of following
students on their entries:
Shortlisted by Jury as a great idea for the reserve:
- Mikayla - water fountain and water wall
- Daniel - Skate Park
- Joshua - graffiti wall
- Jake - BMX jumps
Shortlisted by Jury for creativity and inspiration:
- Felicity and Kasey - giant snakes and ladders (3 votes)
- Ebony, Katie, Kassi and Tara - frog slide (2 votes)
For the next stage of this project we would like to invite everybody from the school community (particularly around the students from year 6 who
have been involved in the project) to attend a Community Design Workshop where you will be able to contribute to the development of the
student's ideas. Certificates of Appreciation are available for all student participants, with special mention to those whose ideas that have been
shortlisted.
Community Working Bees will be coming in April to install much of the finalised project work.

Host Families Needed For New Exchange Students in 2015
Many girls and boys aged between 15 and 18 from exciting countries like Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Canada, Japan,
Switzerland, Brazil, Norway, Sweden, Argentina, Finland and Austria are hoping to come here to study for 3, 5 or 10 months from July this year
and stay with a volunteer family that is willing to host and welcome them and can afford an extra member at the family table. If you feel you could
do this for them for the length of their stay or even some of it, please contact Klaus Schumann on (03) 9758 4279 and let me know of your
interest.
