PRESENTATIONS 1) Match Bridge & Summer Job Resource Fair (United Way Bay Area)-Larry Berry The Job fair is a partnership between the Mayor’s office, DCYF and United Way. Match Bridge works primary with the 14-18 and 16-24 year olds. A little bit of history, last summer they created over 7,600 employment opportunities which was a combination of private, public sector, internships. 51.9% of those jobs were permanent jobs from some corporate partners. They serve to offer year around services and not just summer opportunities. Young people can get started with the program now, sign-up, create a profile and start looking at opportunities. They work with many of the organizations from the previous year and they have some new ones too. They screen the youth for “work ready” and if they’re not they refer them to somewhere where they can get job readiness training and attend various workshops such Updated on: 3/30/2015 Page 2 BMAGIC COMMUNITY CONVENER MEETING Tuesday, March 17th, 2015 1:00pm – 3:00pm PST Hosted at: 5075 Third Street, San Francisco, CA 94124 Facilitated by: Lyslynn Lacoste & Cherie Cuenca- BMAGIC STAFF as resume development, cover letter development and networking topics and all the training are year around. There are 4 classes in the morning which are: Math, Science, Humanities and a class called Issues & Choices. Our classes are very project based, so they focus on a project base learning, they do inactive group projects, focusing on team work and learning how to work together. A lot of experiments and fun things like that, the math and science is better much straight forward, all of the classes prepare the youth for the next grade up. In the afternoon they do activities and electives. They offer all sorts of sports and the students topically do two to four activities throughout the five weeks of the program. Their all required to do a least one recreational activity, such a graffiti art, DJ, Dancing, Acting, etc. Last year they partnered with Google to offer a computer coding class. It’s really up to the students to what it is that they really want to do hopefully give them opportunity to try something new. The classroom size is typically 16 or 17 students per class and they have 2 or 3 teachers in each class. They have teacher assistants and teach interns who are high school and college students. Students join after 5th or 6th grade, and participate for three or four consecutive summers. Students graduate from Aim High in the summer prior to their freshman year in high school. Aim High works in close partnership with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), the Exploratorium, as well as partner schools, school districts, and universities. Middle school is a crucial juncture in making a difference in young people's lives and the purpose of Aim High is to reach students at this critical crossroads and propel them towards success in high school and college. Research has shown that sustained intervention during the middle school years goes a long way to keeping students engaged in their education, resulting in lower high school drop-out rates and higher rates of college matriculation. Learn more about our results and what makes Aim High so special. Aim High’s summer school program operates a 5-week summer program, Monday through Friday, from 8am to 3pm. Key components and practices of the Aim High Summer Program design support our outcomes for youth. Everything is free at Sunday Streets, they have Bike rentals, Zumba lessons, Dance lessons, all kind of different activities and information booths from various non-profits from different neighborhoods. The purpose of the event has three main goals, 1. Focus on physical activity and health, 2. Foster community building: so you get to know different neighborhoods/neighbors and the work that the organizations are doing in the neighborhood, 3. Encourage people to rethink how public space is used. We have different projects throughout the city that will come out and kind of transform parking spaces into a parklet . It’s an all volunteer ran event which takes about 100 volunteers to put on this event. The volunteers help with helping staff intersections with the city, parking control officers to riding around the route to make sure everyone is safe and nobody is hurt. They invite everyone to participate at Sunday Streets to host an activity or just do informal outreach. It’s a great opportunity to connect with the community. Last year 300 volunteers donated over 1,500 hours of their time to the program. This year, we've added more neighborhood outreach shifts and new event setup and breakdown shifts to make each event as smooth, safe, and pleasant as possible for participants and neighbors. We estimate we'll need at least 2,000 volunteer hours to reach that goal. Will you stand up for Sunday Streets? Most volunteer shifts are just 2-3 hours long, and event volunteers get a free lunch! It takes hundreds of volunteers each year to make Sunday Streets safe and fun for everyone. How will you make sure Sunday Streets 2015 is a success? 2) School Enrollment Update-Rachel Nip Parents for Public Schools Rachel explained Parents for Public Schools is a nonprofit and one of their programs is the enrollment program where they try to help families with the enroll process for public schools. If families applied to attend a SFUSD public school they would have got their letters this week. Once they received the letters, the most important thing for them to remember is they have to register for that school to secure their spot. San Francisco is a choice city, whichever choice they received in round one they can always apply for in the new four rounds. Round two deadlines is April 10th, 2015 and it’s also the same deadline for registration. If you’re interested in the statics of how many people go their first assignment you can go onto the district website http://www.sfusd.edu/ Their also trying to send a message to families that charter schools are also public school options. So that’s one of their choices when looking at the whole enrollment process. Although Charter schools are different then the public schools, they have their own deadline and application process. 3) Children Youth & Their Families Oversight & Advisory Committee-Update Lyslynn explained the children fund which is the funding which DCYF will get for the next twenty five year and then majority of the money will be give out to many organizations that has DCYF funding. Apart of this reauthorization there were three main additions, it increased to TAY Youth, a council will be formed that will be heading by the mayor’s office. The third piece is the oversight which is the advisory committee and the services provider working group. This is a way for some of you to be involved and not only making decisions for Bayview but city wide. With the families and oversight commitment that’s actually going to replacing the citizen advisory committee which DCYF currently has. There are 11 seats all together on that committee, so what’s happening now is there are groups that are getting together to advocate for people to be a part of this committee. Lyslynn is a part of a coalition (children’s fund) which is really instrumental of getting the reauthorization and she wanted to make sure everyone is aware of what’s going on. If you’re receiving DCYF funding than you’re not eligible to be a part of one of these seats. If you have people who can recommend that have expertise with working with children, youth and their families, those are the people they would like to be a part of this committee.
