BCSD students test mettle with numbers in Math Bowl THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN The Bakersfield City School District held its 29th annual BCSD Math Bowl Wednesday at Chipman Junior High. About 250 students competed in one of two divisions, a gold division for sixth-graders and a silver for fifth-graders. Gold results by category Fantastic Flash: Diego Rodriguez, of Downtown School, in first; Nathaniel Nuñez, of Harding School, in second; and Alex Peña, of Franklin Elementary, in third. Super Star: Brian Varona, of Franklin School, in first; Philip Kessler, of Thorner Elementary, and Mustafa Hugais of Downtown School tied in second; and Donovan Nguyen, of Chavez Elementary; and James Juarez, of Harding School tied in third. Thinker: Ethan Flores, of Thorner School, in first place; Jose Rangel, of Harding School, in second place; and Duncan Louden of Franklin Elementary in third place. Dynamic Duo: Celeste Bojorquez and Allyson Reyes, of Thorner School, in first place; Alex Cantu and Matt George, of Harding School, tied with Christian Walters and Marcos Jimenez, of Chavez, in second; and Jayden Canales and Jenna Taylor, of Cato Middle School, in third. Power Relay: A Harding School team in first; Owens Intermediate School in second; and Downtown School in third. Team Round: Chavez School and Owens Intermediate tied in first place; Thorner Elementary in second; and Harding (which also won the schoolwide trophy) in third. Traditional Relay: Downtown School in first, Owens Intermediate in second and Chavez School in third. Silver results by category Super Star: Robert Lopez, of Pauly Elementary in first place; Victor Ibarra, of Casa Loma Elementary in second; and Lailani Strickland, of Harris Elementary; Xavier Lopez, of Hills Elementary; and Bryan Reyes, of Williams Elementary, tied in third. Dynamic Duo: Andrew Salgado and Eziquio Villegas, of Casa Loma School, in first; Madilyn Fernandez-Bell and Johnathan Gresham, of Harris School, in second; and Angel Galvan and Benito Triana, of Pauly School, in third. Team Round: Horace Mann Elementary in first place, Casa Loma (which also won the school-wide trophy) in second and Hills Elementary in third. Traditional Relay: Horace Mann Elementary in first place, Hills in second and Casa Loma in third. Sequoia Middle School submitted the most creative poster, and Casa Loma had the poster with the best representation of this year’s theme.
