The symposium will present opportunities through idea sharing, insight, and proven practices for culturally and linguistically diverse learners. It will bring together teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, parents, district administrators, and universities to connect on current and other important topics. A scheduled time will be available for you to network with colleagues and visit exhibits. Continental breakfast, luncheon, and snacks will be included as part of the registration fee. Eligibility: Applicants must be from a Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex BEAM participating district or University (a district or university representative is a member and is represented at a majority of meetings during the current year). High School Senior (two $1000 scholarships) ­ student must have been in a Bilingual or ESL program at one time. Paraprofessional (two $1000 scholarships) – must be working as a teacher aide in a Bilingual­ESL classroom, and pursuing a degree in Bilingual­ESL. University undergraduate student (two $1000 scholarships) –an undergraduate education major with a minor in bilingual or ESL. University graduate student (two $1000 scholarships) –a graduate or doctoral student majoring in education or administration. ▪ When several candidates meet the criteria, PRIORITY will be given to students majoring in bilingual or ESL education and those in greater financial need. ▪ Applicant is not eligible if he/she is related to a scholarship committee member or the Executive Board ▪ If selected for the scholarship award, you must be present to receive scholarship on March 21st, Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Symposium in Arlington, Texas. 31st ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM BILINGUAL EDUCATION & ESL TEACHER OF THE YEAR NOMINATION Deadline for submission: February 2, 2015 INTRODUCTION: At the heart of every successful bilingual program are caring and dedicated teachers who believe in the value of native language instruction to help language minority students excel academically. These are women and men who approach the teaching and learning process with a remarkable sense of responsibility, guided in their actions by a deep­seated conviction that every student is important, that education matters, and that one teacher can make a difference. These are indeed extraordinary educators whose daily work in the classroom is performed con orgullo y excelencia. In recognition of outstanding teaching and exemplary professional service by bilingual and ESL teachers throughout Texas, the Bilingual Education Association of the Metroplex established the BEAM Bilingual Education and ESL Teacher of the Year awards. AWARD: The winners of the 2015 BEAM Bilingual Education and ESL Teacher of the Year competition will be publicly acknowledged and honored during the annual BEAM symposium where a special plaque recognizing outstanding teaching will be presented. The cost of registration for the symposium will be waived. Both the Bilingual Education and ESL Teacher of the Year are welcome to invite up to three guests to the dinner on Friday, March 20, 2015 and the luncheon award presentation. The Teacher of the Year winners will submit required documentation to TABE for consideration of Teacher of the Year at the state level. NOMINATIONS: Only current BEAM members are eligible to nominate Bilingual Education and ESL teachers for the competition. Each member is limited to one nominee for each award. The current BEAM president is ineligible to participate in this competition. The BEAM committee may use any selection method for choosing a candidate for this award as long as the process is fair, impartial and conducted without regard to age, sex, race or ethnicity, disability, or religion. The selection must be based on evidence of outstanding bilingual education or ESL instruction. QUALIFICATIONS: Nominees must meet the following qualification requirements: ­Full­time bilingual education or ESL teacher in a TEA­approved bilingual education or ESL program ­Texas bilingual or ESL certified teacher for at least three consecutive years prior to receiving this award and actively engaged in full­time employment in a bilingual or ESL classroom at the time of nomination ­Current and past year member of BEAM ­ Member of TABE and NABE (fees are the responsibility of the member or nominee) ­Provide documentation that indicates the nominee enjoys the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues ­Exhibit distinguished leadership service to the profession and the community 10
BILINGUAL AND ESL TEACHER OF THE YEAR NOMINATION & APPLICATION Deadline for submission: February 2, 2015 PRESENTATION OF MATERIALS: BEAM members are responsible for submitting one electronic copy and one hard copy of the nominee’s portfolio of materials presented in Spanish/English and in a well­organized notebook. Nominee portfolios will be evaluated on a 100­point system. The following documentation must be included in the portfolio and in the following order: 1. Nomination Letter – this letter must be signed by the teacher’s immediate supervisor and should certify that the nominee meets all of the qualifications cited above to participate in this competition. The supervisor’s address, telephone number, and current e­mail address must be included in the nomination letter. 2. Background Information – use the attached Data Sheet to provide basic information about the candidate. Include curriculum vitae containing such information as: academic preparation, dates and titles of professional certificates/endorsements, professional work experience, membership in professional organizations and number of years as member, honors. 3. Biographical Profile – a narrative written by the nominee describing specific events or experiences leading to his/her involvement in bilingual education. This narrative must be typed, double­spaced and should not exceed five pages. 4. Philosophy of Education ­ an essay written by the candidate reflecting his/her commitment to the profession, including a description of the candidate’s educational values and beliefs in the effectiveness of bilingual instruction. This essay must be typed, double­spaced, and should not exceed five pages. 5. Professional Development – a listing and brief description of the candidate’s participation in professional organizations and service committees, commissions, task forces, workshops, and conferences, etc., including the number of years of service and membership for all of the above. This section should be typed, double­spaced, and should not exceed five pages. 6. Community Service – a listing and brief description of the candidate’s participation in organizations as well as personal efforts to improve bilingual and social conditions of the community. This section should be typed, double­spaced, and should not exceed five pages. 7. Letters of Support – documentation indicating that the candidate has the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues. Should not exceed five entries. 8. Photograph – a 5” by 7” glossy black and white. ***Only requested materials/documentation will be evaluated*** FINALIST INTERVIEW: After all entries are reviewed for the above criteria, two finalists will be notified to attend a scheduled interview with the BEAM Teacher of the Year Selection Committee. Each finalist and local affiliate president will be notified of the selection and scheduled interview. Finalists will be evaluated on their ability to articulate on critical issues on bilingual or ESL topics in a public forum.
