The AACS state bill tracking portal is now up and running. Click here to view the bills from your state. While this new member benefit will be of particular benefit to schools without professional statehouse representation, it will allow all AACS members to identify trends and respond to thread in a more cohesive fashion. The association has also retained Brian Newman to serve as a state relations advisor. In addition to setting up and refining AACS’ state tracking portal, Brian will be working with the State Relations Committee to address state legislative and regulatory issues, and compliance with US Department of Education program integrity rules. In this capacity, he will assist members to: Develop and adapt model legislation to specific state code Identify legislative sponsors and committee leadership Ensure YOU have a unified voice when a bill or regulation may impact our schools In order to assist Brian’s efforts to capture the full universe of state legislation of interest to AACS members, please email him if you are aware of bills from your state that are missing from the AACS portal. A regulatory counterpart capturing state rule making notices will also be launched shortly. Brian is currently the principal of Abington Strategies, LLC, a government relations, public affairs and issues management consultant firm. More importantly, he served from 1997 to 2013 in various government relations positions with the Career College Association (CCA) and the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU). As APSCU’s Director of State Affairs, Brian was the principal liaison between APSCU and 30 affiliated state associations to identify and address issues of importance to the for-profit postsecondary education sector. He also selected vendors and established protocols creating a web-based state legislative and regulatory monitoring portal; and organized several successful state legislative days to educate policy makers about the economic impact of private sector colleges and universities. Please welcome Brian to the AACS team! He can be reached directly by email or by phone at 202-491-5254 with any questions or to discuss an issue in your state.
