Press releases
Anniversary checks in Hadleigh
Police have carried out anniversary checks in the Tayler Road area of Hadleigh as
investigations continue after a teenage girl reported being raped.
Officers spoke to around 20 people who were out in the area, near the junction with
Yeoman Crescent, between 7.30pm and 10pm on Saturday 21 March, a week on from
the incident on Saturday 14 March, in a bid to gather more information that may help
the inquiry.
The details gathered will be fed into the investigation, but no significant new information
was received.
Police are continuing to ask anyone who may have seen a man - described as white,
aged in his early 20s, of medium build, clean shaven, around 5ft 7in tall, and wearing
dark blue jeans and a black Adidas hooded top with the hood up, two black cords
hanging down, three white stripes down both arms and a white Adidas motif on the right
chest area – in this area around 9.30pm on Saturday 14 March to come forward.
Detectives are also looking to identify two males who were in the nearby park, referred
to locally as Cox’ s park, around this time who they wish to trace to eliminate them from
enquiries. One is described as white, in his early 20s, of stocky build and was wearing a
red long-sleeved jumper and possibly jeans and white trainers, while the other was
slightly taller and thinner than the first, white and wore dark clothing and possibly wore
glasses.
Officers are also reassuring residents that none of the three incidents in the town since
the start of the year are linked.
Superintendent Andrew Mason said; "While we appreciate these reports have caused
concern in Hadleigh, our investigations have shown there is no connection between
them. Each of these reports is very different in nature, with the most recent in Angel
Street involving parties known to each other and a 43-year-old man being arrested on
suspicion of rape. Officers are currently carrying out work to ensure this is fully
investigated and he has been bailed to return to police on May 6 to allow this work to be
done. We are confident that he does not pose a risk to the wider public.
"We will, of course, keep residents informed as our enquiries progress following the
Tayler Road incident and a team of officers is dedicated to resolving this. The teenager is
continuing to receive support and we’ d ask anyone with information to come forward.”
Anyone who can help is asked to call the Joint Major Investigation Team by dialling
Suffolk Police on 101 quoting reference HD/15/422.

next few weeks.
More dates have been added to the countywide schedule of evenings.

Advice to keep property safe as evenings get lighter
With the clocks going forward a few weeks ago, householders across Norfolk and Suffolk
are being urged not to make it easy for potential thieves.
Officers are advising people to pay extra attention to home, bike and vehicle security
with the onset of lighter nights – often seen as an opportunist time for this type of
crime.
Suffolk Chief Superintendent Jon Brighton said: "Most thefts are carried out by
opportunist criminals. The coming summer months can bring with them thieves on the
look-out for lapses in security – such as doors and windows left open, bicycles poorly
secured or property left on display at beauty spot car parks.
"People are advised to be aware and make use of simple crime prevention methods
which deprive thieves of the opportunity to steal."
Suffolk Constabulary offers the following advice to residents:
Windows
Always lock your windows when you leave the house.
Remove the keys and keep them in a safe place. However, everyone should know where
the keys are kept so they can escape in an emergency.
Doors
Keep your front and back doors locked or in view when you are at home.
Use or consider fitting a door chain and spy hole - a chain allows you to speak to the
caller without opening the door fully and the spy hole also you to see who is at the door.
Fit five lever mortice locks to all external doors.
Check your cylinder locks on patio/plastic doors and ensure they are snap and bump
resistant - a local Master Locksmith can advise if you are not sure.
Keys
Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat,
burglars know all the usual hiding places.
Never leave your house or car keys in or near a door or window.
Attention should also be paid to the security of sheds and garages and to the property
stored within.
Parked cars – especially those left in remote areas such as beauty spots – should be
left locked and secure with no property left on display and satellite navigation devices,
car audio equipment, cameras, handbags and laptops should be removed from the
vehicle entirely.
Bikes should always be left secure, using a sturdy lock covering the bike stand, wheel
rim and frame together.
People attending large scale events or out and about in busy areas should be mindful of
thieves and keep handbags closed and mobile phones out of sight and kept securely on
their person.
Chief Superintendent Brighton added: "Suffolk is an extremely safe place to live and
your chances of being a victim of such crimes still remain extremely low, but you should
consider making your house look like someone is at home.
"With the weather improving, more of us will be out and about so please remember to
keep your property secure and don’ t become an easy target.
"We would also encourage people to be a good neighbour - if anyone is spotted acting
suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police."
Anyone with information about thieves operating in their area should contact Suffolk
Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.
Shed, garage & outbuilding security
As you will see from the crime information above, there has been an increase in shed
and outbuilding burglaries. In some cases, the building has been insecure, which makes
it all too easy for an offender to get in quickly and quietly. Whilst the police are doing
everything they can to prevent, deter and detect these offences, home-owners also have
a clear part to play if we are to reduce these thefts and keep your possessions where
they should be – in your shed or garage, not in the thief’ s.
Please take a moment to read these ten top tips and implement as many of the
suggestions as you can…
1. Site the shed as close to your house as possible – This will make it harder for the
thief to break-in without being noticed.
2. Add a perimeter of crunchy gravel around the shed or garage, and plant some
nice thorny plants under the windows. Pyracantha, Berberis and Common Hawthorn are
popular and effective.
3. Obscure shed and garage windows with net curtains or whitewash - A burglar
seldom steals what he can't see.
4. If your garage has a rear door, fit it with a 5-lever mortise lock certified to BS
3621. Try to do the same for your shed, but if the door is not suitable, fit a "closeshackled" padlock instead and ensure that the fittings are bolted into the shed, not just
screwed. Alarm padlocks are available from Sudbury Police Station.
5. For garage rear doors, fit hinge-bolts in the back edge of the door. These prevent a
thief from opening it by removing the hinges.
6. For sheds, if the door isn't suitable for hinge bolts, make the hinges harder to
remove by bolting them to the door or by drilling out the screw heads.
7. If your garage has an up-and-over door, you can secure it from the inside by
drilling a hole in each runner, just above the wheel, (with the door is in the closed
position). Snap a padlock through each hole and you now have a simple device to block
the wheel's movement and stop the door opening.
8. Secure cycles, mowers, strimmers, hedge-trimmers etc., with a lockable steel
cable and ground anchor. - Thieves like to work fast, so slow them down!
9. Visibly mark removable items. Thieves seldom steal property that can be traced
back to its owner. Visible marking makes it obvious to a thief that the item is traceable. For details of suitable products, contact your local Crime Reduction Officer on 101.
10. Fit an alarm. If you have a house alarm, you should extend it to cover your garage.
Otherwise, you can always invest in a simple battery-operated alarm to protect your
shed, garage, caravan or boat. Most have a volume of around 130db and few burglars
will be able to stay in the protected area for more than a few seconds. Shed alarms are
available to purchase from Sudbury, Hadleigh & Capel Police Stations.
