Welcome to Berkshire South
A Note from the Executive Director
It never ceases to delight me how interconnected Berkshire South is with the
community it serves. Someone using the pool alongside me during the afternoon
is later that evening enjoying dinner with their family at the same restaurant as
mine. The “hellos” and “see you later or tomorrows” just keep coming as I run
errands or pick up things at the grocery store. I know we live in the Berkshires and
that we are close-knit, but more than that, many of us living here, not to mention
our visitors and summer residents, are further bonded through the Community
Center and the unity it brings.
Berkshire South is a place where we can be comfortable without judgment, where we are accommodated regardless
of financial or physical considerations – a place where we can all belong. It is also where we achieve our fitness and
wellness goals, interact with neighbors and friends, and watch our children thrive and grow. It is heartwarming to see
entire families avail themselves of the programs, events and social opportunities we provide, learning to dance, enjoying
exercise and good nutrition, practicing teen leadership, or helping to teach their babies to swim. All coming together
with a strong sense of community constantly reinforced both within and without the Center’s walls.
With the enjoyment and comradery we experience at Berkshire South, it is sometimes easy to overlook the fact
that we are indeed a nonprofit that relies on the generosity of our donors to survive. People are often surprised when
I tell them that membership and fees cover only 60% of the Center’s operating costs, leaving 40% to be raised from
supportive individuals, foundations and businesses each year. When we accomplish this, we are at a financial breakeven making it ever-more critical to achieve our annual goals. If it seems the fund raising never stops, it’s because it
can’t if we are to continue providing state of the art facilities, cutting-edge programs, and support to families in need
360 days of the year.
A dear friend of the Community Center recently established a bequest remembering us in her final wishes. Over
and above this beneficent gesture, this wonderful person is also a member, responds to our annual appeal, attends our
events, and volunteers a number of hours at Berkshire South. In short, she supports us in every way she can. As we
strive to meet the community’s needs by strengthening or adding activities and programs, we call on you to pursue
every possible avenue in helping us to carry on. We promise in return to keep our doors open wide and your Center
active and welcoming, ensuring that the symbiotic relationship of community and Center will continue to bond us all.
Thank you in advance with gratitude for your generous support!
Jenise Lucey

Kalari Vinyasa
Sundays
11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
Kalarippayattu is an ancient martial art
form originating in the Kerala region of
southern India. It has strong roots in
yoga as well as Ayurvedic medicine and
may pre-date all east Asian martial art
forms. Building upon specific stances and
progressing to more advanced footwork
and combinations of stances, fluid, dancelike movement patterns are developed.
These patterns are designed as exercise
to develop stamina, flexibility, strength,
quickness, and focus. Combining the
grace and body control of dance, the inner
meditative focus of yoga, and the strength
and power of dynamic exercise, this class
offers an environment for the cultivation
of qualities applicable to many aspects of
health and life.

Healthy Backs Basics
Wednesdays
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Back pain and discomfort are common issues. Experts say that 8
out of 10 people will suffer back pain at some point in their lives.
Back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability
and is the second most common reason for a visit to the doctor.
In addition to personal suffering and discomfort, the financial
cost is high. Some estimates say back pain costs more than $100
billion to the national economy in medical costs and lost work
time. In this class we will be using ViniYoga which adapts the
yoga practice to the unique physical condition and needs of each
individual; in other words, the yoga practice fits the individual’s
body, not the other way around. This yoga practice will allow the
gentle stretching of the back to create better flexibility, balance,
and core strength.

Berkshire South
Community Cornerstone
One of the most effective and simplest ways you can ensure that all the things
you care about, including Berkshire South Regional Community Center, last long
after you have gone, is by leaving a bequest in your will. While often thought of
as a “planned gift,” it is much more than that. It is a way for you to leave a lasting
legacy and to help Berkshire South continue to meet the needs of the community
long into the future.
Your gift will list you in the Community Cornerstone. This enthusiastic group of individuals has spelled out their intentions and wishes in
their will. While perhaps you have often thought about leaving a gift for Berkshire South, thinking without action will not make it happen.
It is important that you take the steps to ensure a lasting legacy to the organizations that you care about most. We ask you to consider
including Berkshire South Regional Community Center on your list of those organizations you want to see continue their great work for
generations to come. It’s quite an easy thing to do. Talk with your family, talk with your financial advisors, and then talk with us.
