KEYNOTESESSIONS
Jeff Gomez | CEO, Starlight Runner Entertainment
The Future of Print In a Transmedia World
With printers facing an array of challenges, pundits and gurus have been calling for new directions
and “creative entrepreneurism” in order to maintain the vitality of the industry. But what about the
specifics? In the age of pervasive communications, transmedia storytelling has risen to become one
of the most powerful and lucrative creative approaches for reaching a mass audience. What started
in Hollywood, and has moved into the world of video games and advertising, can now be applied to
print. In this exclusive keynote, Jeff Gomez, the world’s leading expert in transmedia development and production, will discuss new models
for successful multi-platform projects sourced to print. These include new ways to collaborate with clients to expand brand and intellectual
property franchises and new creative applications of vanguard digital print technologies. Born and bred in the print industry, Jeff will
illustrate his points with case studies drawn directly from his exciting career.
Jeff Gomez, CEO, Starlight Runner Entertainment, is the world’s leading transmedia producer. As a consultant to Fortune 500 companies,
Jeff contributes strategic planning and production for the extension of entertainment content and brands across traditional and new
media platforms. He also leverages data, digital assets, and creative skills to extend the story worlds of films, television shows, toys, books,
comics, animation, and videogame titles across multiple media platforms, which deepen audience engagement and generate massive fan
communities and multiple revenue streams.
Michael Murphy | President, Japs-Olson
Why It’s Time to Reinvest in Your Business!
Michael Murphy believes the best way to ensure long-term success in the printing industry is to
provide a top quality product while remaining laser focused on productivity and efficiency in the plant.
His 100-year old-firm, Japs-Olson, did not get to be one of the largest commercial printing and direct
mail production firms in the country by taking a “hunker down” approach to business. The company
has a long history of investment in innovative equipment and technologies, most recently high speed
full-color inkjet presses. In this keynote session, Michael will share how Japs-Olson has prospered under this reinvestment philosophy and
why right now is the right time to reinvest in your business.
Michael Murphy is President of Japs-Olson, a commercial and direct mail printing company located in St. Louis Park, MN. Japs-Olson has
$150MM sales and employs over 600 people.
Michael has been in the graphic arts for his entire career. A third-generation printer, he has been with Japs-Olson since his graduation from
RIT in 1993. He started his career in prepress, where he was responsible for the digital conversion of Japs-Olson’s prepress systems, and
entry into CTP in 1996. He has managed the plant in the roles of VP of technology, COO, and President where he is responsible for all of JapsOlson’s production operations.

KEYNOTESESSIONS
Ron Rosenberg | President, Quality Talk, Inc.
How to Dominate Your Market Niche!
These are challenging times in the printing industry. To stay successful, you have to understand
your market and offer your customers something truly unique. Anything less and you become a
commodity and allow people to make their decisions on price alone.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. Marketing and customer service expert Ron Rosenberg will share
his proven strategies for unprecedented business growth. In this highly interactive and entertaining session you will discover:
• The 5 keys to understanding your business
• How to dominate your market with your “Unique Selling Proposition”
• The 4 “Ms” of outrageous marketing—ignore them at your peril!
• The long-term value of a customer and its importance to your bottom line
• Why you should rethink your entire marketing strategy to grow your business
Ron Rosenberg is a nationally recognized, award-winning expert on marketing and customer service and a winner of the prestigious
“Marketer of the Year” award at the International Marketing Summit. He has authored numerous books and learning systems. His newest
program, the Business Self-Defense 90-Day Implementation Fast-Track offers tools, strategies, and resources to help people effectively
define their goals and objectives, overcome obstacles that might impede their efforts, and develop concrete action plans to achieve
dramatic results.
Nancy Lyons | CEO, Clockwork Active Media
There Is No Work-Life Balance. It’s All Life!
Culture is deliberate. You build it just like you build your business. The way people feel at work
has a direct impact on the bottom line. What’s more, your brand and your culture are inextricably
intertwined. And yet most organizations spend more time on their story than they spend thinking
about how to align that story with their culture in a way that best supports their people. And the
people are everything. So how do you build a values-driven culture that promotes whole life balance
while also emphasizing the work ethic you need to fuel a successful business? We’re going to answer that question and others you didn’t
even know you had. Because there is no work/life balance. It’s way better than that.
Nancy Lyons speaks extensively about work culture, entrepreneurship, social media, technology, and leadership. Her guiding philosophy
is that a human-centered approach to technology is the only way to get results that make a difference. Problem solving is about
empowerment: motivated people create good products. Nancy supports clients and teams by fostering a collaborative, idea-driven culture
that nurtures creativity and brainpower.

LEADERSHIPSESSIONS
Mergers and Acquisitions from the Printer’s Perspective
Panel of business owners moderated by Paul Reilly, Partner, New Direction Partners
Monday, May 18: 9:40–10:40 a.m.
You have heard the experts, now hear from the voices in the trenches. Paul Reilly from New Direction Partners will
lead this panel of printers who will discuss their decisions to participate in M&A, their views of the process, and their
results. This session will provide a different view on the benefits and pitfalls of today’s very active M&A market.
Meet the TechCreative: Your Next Mission-Critical Employee
Brian Regan, President, Semper International
Monday, May 18: 11:00 a.m.–Noon
A recent study by MIT Sloan Management concluded that companies now face a digital imperative: Adopt new
technologies effectively or face competitive obsolescence. This is especially significant in the light of technology
advances where the rate of change has nearly eclipsed our ability to teach and train for it. Brian Regan has been watching a new role evolve
over the past two decades–one he and his Semper colleagues call the TechCreative. In this session, Brian defines this critical movement and
shows how top businesses are currently deploying their TechCreative assets. He’ll discuss questions you should ask your team to evaluate
their current technological abilities and roles to recognize and respond to these new industry challenges.
Capitol Connection: Top “Pay Attention” Issues for Printers
Lisbeth Lyons, Vice President of Government Affairs, Printing Industries of America
Monday, May 18: 2:10–3:10 p.m.
As the head of government affairs for Printing Industries of America, there is no one better to connect you to what’s
hot on Capitol Hill than Lisbeth Lyons. Legislative debates, potential tax hikes, health insurance issues, and of course
postal reform are just a few of the government affairs topics that matter to our industry today. Join Lisbeth Lyons in what’s sure to be an
eye-opening session in which you will learn about key legislative challenges and opportunities for the industry and how your company can
help affect legislative outcomes.
Yes, You Can Beat the Commodity Price Game—with Quality!
David Hunter, Principal, Pilot Marketing
Monday, May 18: 3:40–4:40 p.m.
The old “price, quality, or speed—pick two” adage is considered a thing of the past; it’s commonly held that
customers today expect all three. But is that really true? David Hunter posits that quality can indeed be a
differentiator today, not only when the competition is one of those low-cost online printing services, but for high-end work as well. David
explains how important it is for owners and managers of printing firms to establish their own color tolerances and quality levels based on
capabilities, and he’ll describe how to build consensus around them with internal sales and operational staff as well as clients. Attendees
have the opportunity to take a color tolerance test during this interactive session to gauge their own quality tolerance.

LEADERSHIPSESSIONS
How to Build a Margin-Healthy Business
Waleed Ashoo, President/CEO, Lithexcel
Monday, May 18: 4:50–5:50 p.m.
Growing the bottom line is ultimately what every successful business is all about. In his business, Lithexcel, Waleed
Ashoo has proven that despite the ups and downs in the marketplace, it’s possible to continue to grow a healthier
bottom line—he consistently recognizes net profits many times higher than industry averages. In this session, Waleed will share his strategy
for building a margin-healthy business. He’ll discuss how his team is growing the print business without actually selling “print” and share
how he avoids the “cost plus” model—pricing projects based on opportunity—and what the market will bear, much like technology
companies operate. This is a great opportunity to get some new ideas directly from an industry profit leader.

John Foley, Jr., CEO and CMO, interlinkONE and Grow Socially
Tuesday, May 19: 9:30–10:30 a.m.

can cut through the clutter and focus on precisely what you need to do to succeed as a print and marketing service provider. This thoughtprovoking presentation will cover how to create a business plan, develop a strategic marketing strategy, track your efforts, and more.
The Big Shake-Up: A Total Business Transformation Story
Joe Gass, President, Heritage Printing
Tuesday, May 19: 11:00 a.m.–Noon
Most printing companies have added new products and services over the years and many have changed their
company names, but few have reinvented themselves as thoroughly as Heritage Printing. Once a greater
Washington, DC-based publication printer, Heritage has grown into a successful wide-format business with a second location in Charlotte,
NC. Heritage President Joe Gass shares the story of his journey reinventing just about every aspect of this family-owned company,
eliminating sales staff entirely while mastering Internet marketing to successfully compete head-to-head with much larger Web-based

BUSINESSDEVELOPMENTSESSIONS
Print, Profit, and Integrated Marketing Communications
Thad Kubis, Founder, Institute for Media Convergence
Monday, May 18: 4:50–5:50 p.m.
If profit is your goal then why are you still offering a single-tier business model? Printing is viewed by your
marketing partners (clients) as a shallow, limited-in-scope media that is normally positioned at the end of the
advertising, marketing, and communications pipeline. To expand your profits you must alter this incorrect belief. Your profit is in part driven
by your clients’, customers’, or prospects’ vision of who you are and what you can do for them. In short, can you offer a skill set that will
reduce their cost and/or increase their profits?
Integrated Marketing (Brand) Communications (IMC) is not the answer but can be the vehicle of change, a map, a chart, your tool-based GPS
device that will allow you to change the perspective, alter the view, and open your firm to be seen as a multi-channel trusted advisor and
partner offering a defined, needed skill set based on profit advocacy.
11 Ways to Engage Prospects and Customers without Picking Up the Phone
Kelly Quinn Mallozzi, Coach and Mentor, Success.In.Print
Tuesday, May 19: 9:30–10:30 a.m.
The phone rings. Voicemail. No one calls back. Voicemail. Connecting with a person is more vital today than ever.

way. This session is for anyone who wants to learn more about some great new (and a few old) tools to better enable you to drive sales, get
new customers, and even serve your existing customers better!
Competitive Differentiation: How to Tell a Story That Sells
Kevin McArdle, President, McArdle Business Advisors
Tuesday, May 19: 11:00 a.m.–Noon
When your prospects struggle to tell the difference between you and your competitors, your survival comes down to
your company’s story. What you say and how you say it has to be unique, believable, and powerful enough to inspire
your prospective customers to make a change—and choose you over your competition. In this practical, hands-on session, Kevin McArdle
will walk you through an interactive look at nine messaging tools that will help you develop a unique story for your company. This story will
enable you to differentiate yourself from your competitors, hold firm on your margins, and grow your business by closing more deals.
How to Use Visual Analysis Tools as a Sales Differentiator
Kelly Canavan, Global Market Development Manager, Visual Attention Technologies and Applications,
3M Company
Tuesday, May 19: 1:00–2:00 p.m.
Imagine a tool that can analyze photos and designs and actually predict what’s likely to grab a viewer’s attention
in the first three to five seconds of viewing. That’s what Visual Attention Software (VAS) does, and it’s a remarkable tool that can help
designers, marketing, and brand managers understand attention-getting power of their graphic design projects. In this session, 3M’s
Kelly Canavan shows off this remarkable software and explains how having VAS software is an essential tool to help guide creative design
decisions with science and finalize designs with fewer revisions. It’s also a great new offering that can provide your salespeople with a
reason to call on both prospective and existing clients.
