B u s h designated him as Vice Chairman of the Board for a two-year term. In November 2011, President Barack Obama reappointed Member Sumwalt to an additional five year term. His term of office as a Board Member will run until December 31, 2016. Since joining the Board, Robert has been a fierce advocate for improving safety in all modes of transportation, including teen driver safety, impaired driving, distractions in transportation, and several rail safety initiatives. Prior to coming to the Board, Mr. Sumwalt was a pilot for 32 years, including 24 years as an airline pilot with Piedmont Airlines and US Airways. After his airline career he joined SCANA, a Fortune 500 energy company, where he managed their corporate aviation department. He logged over 14,000 flight hours and earned type ratings in five aircraft. Mr. Sumwalt worked on special assignment to the US Airways Flight Safety Department where he was involved in the development of numerous airline safety programs. He served on the US Airways Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) Monitoring Team. Mr. Sumwalt served as an air safety representative for Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) for 17 years where he chaired ALPA's Human Factors and Training Group. He was a co-founder of that organization's Critical Incident Response Program, which provides guidance to airline personnel involved in traumatic events such as accidents. From 1991 to 1999, Mr. Sumwalt conducted aviation safety research as a consultant to NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System, where he studied flight crew human factors. Mr. Sumwalt co-authored a book on aircraft accidents and he wrote chapters pertaining to aircraft accident investigation in two books. He has written extensively on aviation safety matters, having published over 90 articles and papers. In 2003, Mr. Sumwalt joined the faculty of the University of Southern California's Aviation Safety and Security Program, where he was the primary human factors instructor. In recognition of his contributions to the aviation industry, Mr. Sumwalt received the Flight Safety Foundation's Laura Taber Barbour Award in 2003 and ALPA's Air Safety Award in 2005. He is a 2009 inductee into the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Aeronautical Science (with Distinction) from EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University, specializing in Aviation/ Aerospace Safety Systems and Human Factors Aviation Systems. He is faculty at the University Of Central Florida College Of Medicine and the Florida Institute of Technology College of Aeronautics. Dr. Buza is the author of the FAA accepted “Scenario Based Physiological Training “where flight simulators are integrated into the high altitude chamber for hypoxia training. 6 Featured Speakers Brian Shul - “Sled Driver” Friday, 9:00am - 10:30am Brian was born in Quantico, Virginia, in 1948. He graduated from East C a r o l i n a University in 1970 with a degree in History. That same year he joined the Air Force and attended pilot training at Reese AFB in Texas. Brian served as a Foreign Air Advisor in the Viet Nam conflict, flying 212 close air support missions in conjunction with Air America. Near the end of all hostilities, his AT-28 aircraft was shot down near the Cambodian border. Unable to eject from the aircraft, Brian was forced to crash land into the jungle. Miraculously surviving, he was severely burned in the ensuing fireball. Crawling from the burning wreckage, he was finally found and rescued by a Special Forces team. He was evacuated to a military hospital in Okinawa where he was expected to die. Barely surviving 2 months of intensive care, in 1974 he was flown to the Institute of Surgical Research at Ft Sam Houston, Texas. During the following year, he underwent 15 major operations. During this time he was told he'd never fly again and just lucky to be alive. Months of physical therapy followed, enabling Brian to eventually pass a flight physical and return to active flying duty. Two days after being released from the hospital, Brian was back flying Air Force fighter jet aircraft. He went on to fly the A-7D, and was then selected to be a part of the first operational A-10 squadron at Myrtle Beach, SC, where he was on the first A-10 air show demonstration team. After a tour as an A-10 Instructor Pilot in Arizona, he went on to instruct at the Air Force's Fighter Lead-In School as the Chief of Air-to-Ground Academics. As a final assignment in his career, Brian volunteered for and was selected to fly the super secret spy plane, the SR-71. This assignment required an astronaut type physical just to qualify, and Brian passed with no waivers. Brian's phenomenal comeback story from laying near dead in the jungle of Southeast Asia, to later flying the world's fastest, highest flying jet, has been the subject of numerous magazine articles and an inspiration to many. After 20 years and 5000 hours in fighter jets, Brian retired from the Air Force in 1990. He went on to pursue his writing and photographic interests. In addition to running his own photo studio in northern California, he has authored five books on flying, for which he did all the writing and photography. His first two books are about flying the SR-71 Blackbird. Written in a very non-technical style, these books give the reader a first hand account of being in the cockpit of the world's fastest jet throughout a variety of interesting missions. The books are filled with stunning photos from the author's personal collection and have become the most popular SR-71 books ever done. Brian's third and fourth books are about America's air demonstration teams, the Air Force Thunderbirds, and the Navy Blue Angels. Again filled with unique aerial images, these books take the reader into the dynamic formations of these world famous teams. Brian is now the only man in America to have flown with both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels extensively as a guest in the making of his colorful books. His fifth book is a special remake of his original SR-71 book, entitled Sled Driver, issued in a very richly crafted Limited Edition of only 3500 copies to commemorate the Centennial of Flight in 2003. Brian's story is unique, and he has been asked to speak at numerous functions nationwide on his varied experiences. His entertaining slide show and dynamic message make for an unforgettable presentation. He has been the featured speaker for medical groups, aviation safety seminars, and air museum programs, and frequently has been a motivational keynote speaker for a variety of corporations across America. Most recently his patriotic talks concerning terrorist attacks against America have received national acclaim. Brian was recently honored as an Outstanding Alumni from East Carolina University. He owns Gallery One, a photo studio in northern California, and divides his time between writing, photography, public speaking, and backpacking in the high Sierras. 7 TTCF Convention Educational Seminars • GA Safety Report • Technical Issues Part I & II • Textron/Cessna Update • Upset Training for TTCF Owners • GPS,ADS-B and More • TTCF Member & Accident Survivor • The Future of Aviation Weather • “Sled Driver” (SR-71) • TTCF Model Specific Breakout Sessions • New Avionics Developments • Twin Cessna Market Conditions • Hypoxia and the Aging Pilot • Twin Cessna Safety Issues TTCF Vendor Hall Below is a list of Vendors from last year’s Convention who will Likely come to Colorado Springs. Some fly because they enjoy it, but many are uncomfortable with flying to some degree or another. One important benefit of a Pinch- Hitter course is that it nearly always allays non pilot's fears, spoken or unspoken, about flying. It is probably worth it just for that alone. A flying companion can be a tremendous asset. With training you can make your flying safer, easier and more enjoyable. The Pinch-Hitter course includes basic instruction in aircraft control, navigation and radio usage. It's great to have some knowledgeable assistance when you need it. With a little effort, the companion can take over some of the routine jobs, leaving the pilot more time to better concentrate on flying. In the event of an emergency, wouldn't it be nice to have someone in the right seat who can help rather than panic? To all Flying Companions, if you have ever wanted to know more about what is happening in the cockpit, this course is for you. Taking this class will help you become a better flying partner. The more you know, the more you can relax inflight. Some back seat flying companions will learn to appreciate sitting in the front seat. Most of all, you will be proud to contribute to making each flight safe and enjoyable. This course is ground school only and will be available to all registered TTCF companions on Thursday, May 28th from 9:30am to 12:00pm. There is no charge to all registered TTCF Companions, but please sign up on page 2 of the Member Registration Packet. 11 TTCF Companions’ Suggested Highlights WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 9:00am - 4:00pm Pre-Convention Tour & Lunch - COG Railroad 7:00am - 8:00am Breakfast with Vendors 7:00am - 8:00am Breakfast with Vendors 7:00am - 8:00am Breakfast with Vendors 8:00am - 8:15am Welcome by Bob Thomason 9:00am - 10:30am Brian Shul “Sled Driver” 9:30am - 3:30pm Companions Tour & Lunch Garden of the Gods 11:30am - 3:00pm Airport Day & Barbecue Lunch 12:15pm - 1:15pm Lunch with Vendors if not going on tour 6:00pm - 7:00pm Cocktails 6:00pm - 7:00pm Cocktails 7:00pm - 9:30pm Dinner and Live Auction 7:00pm - 9:00pm Farewell Dinner 6:30pm - 8:30pm Welcome Reception 9:30am - 12:00pm Companions Ground School 12:00pm - 1:15pm Companions Get Acquainted Luncheon 6:00pm - 7:00pm Cocktails 7:00pm - 9:00pm Dinner Dinner and TTCF Live Auction Friday, May 29th, 7:00pm - 9:30pm Dear TTCF Owners, Operators and Vendors: The TTCF Convention is almost upon us.
