Auction
Many Auctions Wrapped into One Event
Little Town. Big Auction. Great Bidding.
Early Bird Auction. Auction bidding starts at 4:30 pm on Thursday afternoon. Many small
items such as crafts, antiques, tack, and plants will be sold. Come hungry because there are two
options for food: a Haystack Dinner or grab-n-go food such as sandwiches, chips, drinks, and
desserts.
Main Auction. Attendees eagerly await the beginning of bidding at 8 am on Friday
morning and stay till the auction wraps up around 6 pm. All day long fine carriages, miniature
horses, harness, tack, carriage appointments, horse-related items, antiques, furniture, quilts,
crafts, and plants are auctioned to the highest bidders. Of special interest is a donated runabout,
a locally made open four-wheel carriage. The entire proceeds from the sale of the runabout will
benefit the Fire Company.
Plant Auction. An exciting area of growth for both the Early Bird Auction and the Main Auction
is the sale of annuals, perennials, roses, flowering shrubs and bushes, shrubbery, ornamental
grasses, and trees. This year the seating area in the shrubbery and plant tents will be significantly
increased to handle larger crowds.
Staff members will be present on these days to help
consignors unload their wares and display their
goods. On Wednesday and Thursday there will be
24-hour security and on Thursday the food stand will
be open from noon till dark.

Local Businesses Lend Manpower to Fire Co.
Businesses that allow their employees to respond to calls during work hours are a very special gift
to volunteer fire companies. At the Bird-in-Hand Fire Company this cooperation is vital to the fire
company’s existence since there are no paid firefighters on the team. Personnel leave their places of
work at a moment’s notice and are absent for the duration of the fire or accident.
To show the impact that responding to fire calls has on a company’s daily operations, local business
leaders were interviewed.
How many? Number of employees involved… These numbers change from year to year as new
firefighters are trained and long-time firefighters transition into supportive roles. Presently, these
companies release 1-8 people when a call is dispatched.
b.
What? The specific policies that are in place…Only one company has a written policy about
responding during work hours. The other businesses have pre-planned what will happen when the
siren sounds. The season of the year and the work projects that are underway at the time of the call
determine how many will respond and which individuals are free to go.
How? The way the work is covered…When the pagers go off, other employees need to step in for
the firefighters who leave to respond to the calls. These employees are also volunteering since they
go the second mile and take on extra work. In fact, it takes the cooperation of the whole company
to make the volunteer system work, since there can be situations when customers need to wait to be
served.
c.
There are times when work tasks cannot be covered, such as certain painting procedures; disruption
of an assembly line process; or when there are priority projects. Then a split-second decision is made
determining who will respond and who will stay back. Other types of work wait until the firefighters
return. Then firefighters must give the extra effort to catch up with their work.
Why? Reasons companies share their manpower…
“Giving is a natural part of
my being, so we encourage our
employees to get involved.”
“We feel strongly about
supporting our local
communities in East
Lampeter Township with
our time and resources. We
value the goodwill aspect of
serving our community.”
d.
“We want to be involved in our
community and help our neighbors.”
“It’s always been this way. We know if we need
help, there will be people coming to help us.”
“At the Bird-in-Hand Fire
Company we have a good thing
going. It is a good team and
we are glad to do our part.”
“There is give and take in
a community. We want
to serve mankind for the
greater good of everyone.”
“The community supports us as customers, so we
support the community. We want to give back. Plus,
we want the Fire Company to be well-staffed.”
PHOTO CAPTIONS:

Road Trip
Wheel Horses Everywhere
Gifts Traveling Afar
We came to the Carriage Auction every
year when we lived in New York, but this
year we moved to Florida. Your auction
flyer was sent to us there and inspired
us to make the trip! I bought this horse
hitch and washboard. I’ll have to try the
washboard out in the pond in our yard.
We attended the Wheel Horse Tractor
Show in Arendtsville near Gettysburg on
Wednesday. The Wheel Horse brand is
a lawn and garden tractor manufactured
between 1946-2006. We own eleven of
them, all of which I have authentically
restored. We were delighted to see the
homemade ice cream at this auction
being made by a Wheel Horse!
My son found this auction on the Internet.
He collects coffee grinders and flatirons to
display in his home in Puerto Rico. As a
gift to him, I bought him a coffee grinder
today and he is waiting to bid on another
one. I also bought a quilt for his wife. My
friend Abe Bermudez is visiting from Puerto
Rico and is enjoying the day with me.
