Timeline of Bishan 6 1870 1890 1900 1936 1942 1948 1960 1969 Kwong Wai Siew federation builds Peck San Theng cemetery, marking the start of Bishan’s history. Peck San temple is built for worshippers and visitors to the cemetery. Kampong San Theng is established. Peck San Theng Chinese School is opened to provide free education for the children of the kampong. Peck San Theng is embroiled in a fierce battle between British and Japanese forces. An additional 175 acres of land is bought to expand the cemetery. Gang activities reach their peak in Peck San Theng Cemetery. Electricity comes to Kampong San Theng under nation-wide Electrification Scheme 1979 1985 1987 1990 1994 2008 2011 Today Government buys over the cemetery land. 100,000 graves are exhumed to make way for Bishan New Town. Kwong Wai Siew federation completes construction of new columbarium to house exhumed remains of the old cemetery. First section of NorthSouth Line is opened, including “San Theng” MRT Station, later renamed Bishan Station. First phase of public housing in Bishan East completed. Residents start moving in, along with schools such as Raffles Institution and Catholic High. Junction 8 Shopping Centre is built near Bishan MRT station. Name derived from Bishan MRT’s station number at the time NS8. Bishan MRT Station is added to the new Circle Line. Bishan Public Library also opens in this year. Bishan Park completes renovations and creates a naturalised river. Construction of the award-winning “Sky Habitat” also begins. Bishan remains one of the most popular and well-known towns in Singapore. 7
