Brain Strain
Surprising Things That Affect Memory and Thinking
Feeling mentally fuzzy? Having mental
hiccups now and then becomes more
common with age. One reason is older
brains are stuffed with information and,
like an overloaded computer, may need
a little longer to retrieve memories. As
your brain ages, it also processes new
information more slowly than when you
were young.
Easy Ways to Dodge
Spring Allergens
Achoo! Spring is in full bloom, which may
mean you’re feeling that familiar allergic
tickle in your nose. To keep allergy symptoms
at bay and still enjoy the season, try these
strategies to limit pollen exposure.
> Stay indoors in early morning and other
times when pollen counts are high.
Subtle declines in processing speed generally have little impact on everyday
life. However, when memory lapses or muddled thinking interfere with one’s
ability to complete daily tasks, it can indicate a deeper problem, though not
necessarily dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
> Wear a mask while mowing or get someone
else to do the chore!
The brain is a complicated organ that can be affected by everything from lack
of sleep to certain medications. With cognitive problems, it’s important to
identify the root cause so the underlying issue can be addressed.
> Close windows and use an air conditioner
with a high-efficiency particulate air
(HEPA) filter.
Some Reasons for Brain Fog
> Dry clothes in a machine instead of on a
clothesline.
Many factors can influence the ability to think, reason, remember and process
information, including these:
> Shower or change clothes after being
outdoors.
> Keep outdoor pets off furniture as they can
carry pollen in their fur.
> Menopause—Researchers are not sure why, but women can experience lower
scores on tests of verbal learning and verbal memory, particularly in the first
year after their last menstrual cycle.
> Wear wrap-around sunglasses to keep
pollen out of your eyes.
> Sleep apnea or insomnia—Sleep is critical for absorbing and cementing
memories for later recall. Lack of sleep can also affect judgment.
Not seeing an improvement? See an allergist
to identify allergies or other sources of
respiratory trouble and come up with a
treatment plan
> Medications—Certain medications like anxiety drugs, statins, beta-blockers,
painkillers and sleep aids can interfere with memory.
> Too little physical activity—Scientists at the University of Illinois who were
studying adult’s sedentary habits found that sitting a lot can harm memory
and learning, even among daily exercisers.
> Stress—High levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) can lead to short-term
memory loss as you age, according to University of Iowa researchers.
> Smoking—Smokers experience faster cognitive decline with age than
non-smokers.

> Dehydration—Being dehydrated can interfere with your
ability to concentrate on tasks and cause confusion and
drowsiness.
> Fortunately, these brain drainers can usually be managed
with some simple lifestyle tweaks.
Brain Boosters
If you love crosswords, keep puzzling, but don’t expect brain
games to significantly improve your overall cognitive abilities.
A brain needs more than mental calisthenics to stay sharp.
Adopting these habits is a good start.
> Eat right. Avoid trans fats, reduce sodium and stock your
kitchen with produce, legumes and whole grains.
> Seek support from friends and family during tough times. If
anxiety, stress or depression don’t ease with time, see your
doctor.
> Take care of your heart. Vascular problems can lead to
dementia, so take steps to control blood pressure, diabetes
and cholesterol.
> Get physical! Along with keeping your ticker in shape,
exercise can reduce stress, ease depression and lower your
overall disease risks.
> Make a date with friends. Being socially active has been
shown to reduce the risk of dementia
> Limit or eliminate alcohol and tobacco. JAMA Psychiatry
recently reported that when you stop smoking your risk of
cognitive problems will drop within 10 years to the same level
as those who never smoked.
Hit the snooze button or take a nap. Extra winks can make your
mind work better. Seek professional help for chronic insomnia
or sleep apnea.
These steps also help you fight disease and stay fit. What’s good
for the brain is good for the body.

n Tai Chi for Health (Beginners)
In an initial 6-week series of classes you will learn Warm-up and Cool-down exercises that familiarize you with Tai Chi
principles as well as the 6 Core Movements of Dr. Paul Lam’s short Sun Style Tai Chi set, also known as Tai Chi for Arthritis.
This set is a great way to get started in Tai Chi. It is suitable for men and women of any age. The movements are lowimpact, slow and fluid, thus gently keeping the joints mobile. As you focus on the slow-motion movements, you will start to
experience the stress-reducing benefits of Tai Chi while deepening your breathing, strengthening your muscles, increasing
your flexibility, improving your balance and reducing your risk of falling.
Tai Chi is far more than just an exercise program. There is much depth to be discovered as you learn the movements and
begin to integrate the Tai Chi principles.
Cost: $36 per 6-week session, payable to the Instructor at the first meeting.
(If at the end of the first class you feel that Tai Chi is not for you, your payment will be refunded.)
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes suitable for exercise.

n Aquatic Exercise
Aquatic Exercise classes are held in the Blake Medical Center, Out-Patient Rehabilitation Facility, at 1894 59th Street
West, Bradenton, on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a six week session. Cost is $42 for each six week session. Class times are
11:00am, 12:00pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm for the beginner and those who are happy with the existing tempo of the class.
We have identified the 10:00am and the 1:30pm class times for those who are more interested in a more focused exercise regimen.
Class size is limited, reservations and advance payment is required for all participants.
Once you register you will receive a confirmation letter with the date and time of your session, with instructions to deliver
to the H2U Cortez Center, payment by check; payable to H2U in the sum of $42, an Exercise Consent & Release Form with
a Physician Permission to Participate Form, which is also included with the confirmation letter. All new participants and for
participants who have been out due to medical reasons, each must present an Exercise Consent & Release Form with the

Eat Fish
Twice a Week
There are many reasons to eat fish!
Besides being delicious, many types of
seafood are high in healthy omega-3
fatty acids and low in bad fats,
cholesterol and calories. The American
Heart Association recommends
eating fish twice a week, which is our
challenge to you this month.
If you aren’t sure how to pick out the
best-tasting and freshest fish at the
supermarket, these tips will help.
Fresh or previously frozen fish has a
mild smell and should be displayed on
clean, fresh ice or refrigerated. Don’t
buy fillets that smell fishy, sour or like
ammonia. If the fish has a head, its
eyes should be clear. Gills should be
red, not brownish, and the skin should
be firm, shiny and free of slime.
Frozen fish should be frozen solid.
Pick a package from the bottom of
the freezer that isn’t more than three
months old. Also avoid packages that
show signs of freezer burn or have ice
crystals, indicating the fish may have
been frozen a while, or thawed and
refrozen.
Pre-breaded fish should be skipped
altogether. These products are
typically high in fat and calories.
Cooking fish is fast and easy. Varieties
like salmon and tilapia taste great
baked. Simply brush with olive oil and
top with fresh or dried herbs, lemon
zest, salt and pepper.

Reach Out to Old Friends
Make new friends but keep the old … because those social connections supply substantial health benefits. Having a strong network of
friends not only reduces isolation and loneliness, it can also lower your risk of heart disease and dementia. In fact, strong social ties are a key
predictor of a long and healthy life, according to Stanford University.
Tips for Reconnecting
• Schedule a regular lunch date (or coffee hour) with a good
friend. Put it on your calendar with
your other appointments so it becomes part of your routine.
• Take a trip. Plan a day trip or weekend getaway with a school
pal, neighbor or former coworker.
• Throw a party or a picnic. Consider making it a family affair
with kids or grandkids. Include widowed
or divorced friends, as they may be suffering from feelings of
isolation.
• Stay in touch. Set aside time in your schedule each week to
email or telephone good friends.

Practice Defensive Walking
Spring is a great time for taking long walks to benefit the body
and mind. Make your walks safer by following these steps:
• Walk where there are sidewalks, if you can. If not, walk facing
traffic, but as far from passing cars as possible.
• Put away your phone and pay attention to your surroundings.
• Cross only at crosswalks, with the light if there is one.
• Don’t step out from between cars, and look both ways for cars
and bicycles—cyclists sometimes bike on the wrong side of the
road.
• Wear light-colored clothing or a reflective vest to be more
visible at night, as well as at dawn or dusk.|
• Look before crossing driveways and entrances to parking
garages or lots.
• Limit alcohol use before (or while) walking.

6 Tips for Talking to Someone with Dementia
It’s heartbreaking when dementia begins to steal away a loved one or friend. To compound an already difficult situation, interacting
with someone suffering from dementia can be frustrating and stressful.
However, there are ways to improve communication, including the following tried-and-true techniques.
1. Be calm. Approach the person calmly and speak slowly and clearly. The person may pick up on and mirror your body language, so
try to suppress your feelings of anxiety or impatience.
2. Adjust your concept of “reality.” A person with dementia may get agitated if you challenge his memories with facts. Rather than
trying to change his mind, try changing the subject.
3. Tell rather than ask. You may want to involve the individual in decision-making, but she may no longer have the cognitive skills to
process your questions. Try making statements like “We are having chicken for dinner,” instead of asking “What would you like for
dinner?”
4. Eliminate unnecessary distractions. Turn off the TV or radio during interactions. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America also
suggests maintaining eye contact to help the person focus.
5. Use visual cues. Since those with dementia may no longer grasp the meaning of certain words, use props and visual cues to
enhance understanding. Make sure she can see and hear you, which may necessitate checking for hearing aids and glasses.
6. Slow down. Wait patiently for the person to respond to your questions or statements. Don’t rush through an activity or a
conversation, as this can cause confusion.

RECIPE
Pasta Primavera
Makes 4 servings.
Let’s celebrate National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables month with a decadent dish that is deceptively
healthy. Simply toss in season vegetables with whole-grain pasta and a light, Alfredo-like sauce.
INGREDIENTS
12 oz. whole-grain bow-tie pasta
2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
½ medium onion
2 cloves garlic
1 Tbsp. dried tarragon
2 carrots, shredded
1 yellow bell pepper, thin slices
1 zucchini, matchstick-like slices
12 oz. frozen peas
½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved
2 Tbsp. butter
½ cup white wine
1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
DIRECTIONS: Cook pasta in a large pot per package directions. If you prefer not to cook with
wine, reserve ½ cup of pasta water as a replacement. Strain pasta and set aside in a large bowl. Heat
oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic and tarragon and sauté 1 to 2 minutes,
until the onion starts to become translucent. Add carrots, bell pepper and zucchini and cook 3 to 5
minutes. Then add peas and tomatoes and cook 2 minutes more. Spoon vegetable medley over the
pasta. Add wine and butter to the pan. For flavor, scrape up any browned bits stuck to the pan. Stir
Parmesan cheese into the wine and butter to make a thin sauce. Pour sauce over the vegetables and
pasta, tossing to coat. Serve immediately.

Travel season is upon us. And
that means exciting destinations,
packed flights and… germs.
Fortunately, a few easy precautions
can help you stay germ-free on your
flight.
Stay hydrated. Airplane cabin air
is dry, which results in itchy eyes,
dry nasal passages and a greater
risk of catching a cold. Sip water to
combat dehydration.
Use saline nasal sprays. A few
spritzes can ease nasal discomfort
and prevent nosebleeds.
Bring antibacterial wipes and
hand sanitizer. Armrests, tray
tables and other surfaces can
harbor germs. Give them a quick
swipe with your wipe before
takeoff, and use hand sanitizer after
touching unclean surfaces.
Position the air vent to blow
directly in front of your face.
Recirculated air is filtered and will
help keep airborne viruses out of
your airspace.
Bring your own blanket and
pillow. Although the blankets and
pillows are meant to be swapped
after every flight, this is not
government-regulated or required.
Unless the pillow or blanket is prepackaged, use your own to avoid
germs.
Avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis
With In-Seat Exercises. Cramped
seating and limited ability to
move about can cause deep vein
thrombosis (DVT), where blood
collects in the veins and develops
into clots. If a blood clot breaks
free and travels to the lung, it can
cause sudden death. To prevent
DVT, move around the cabin every
30 minutes and do seated exercises
like ankle pumps and stretches.
Since legs are especially susceptible
to DVT, try these moves to reduce
risk:
• Knee lifts. Keeping knees bent,
alternate raising each leg 20–30
times.
• Ankle turns. Lift feet off the floor
and move the toes in a circular
motion, one foot clockwise, the
other counterclockwise. Change
direction and repeat.
