The Gateway to Healing:
Art Showcase and Auction
presented by Paley Studios, Ltd.
A burn is one of the most painful injuries a person can endure... especially for children.
Renowned artist and sculptor, Albert Paley knows too well the pain and suffering of surviving a
traumatic burn. On July 26, 2002, Paley, 30 feet in the air, was cutting a piece of metal with a
blowtorch when a gas line burst engulfing him in flames. He was rushed to Strong Memorial
Hospital in Rochester with third degree burns over 30% of his body.
I came close to dying and was put on life support. After a month in the Burn Unit and two
operations for skin grafts I came home to begin the arduous process of physical therapy
accompanied by several other minor surgeries. It was a long road to healing.
The experience was humbling and the journey life changing. It made Albert and his wife,
Frances, realize the importance of helping the victims and families who have endured the painful
physical and psychological suffering of burn injury treatment.
On May 2, 2015, from 7 to 9pm, Albert Paley will join the Finger Lakes Regional Burn
Association (FLRBA) in presenting the 5th Annual Finger Lakes Region Gateway to Healing
Art Showcase and Auction featuring the works of Albert and Frances Paley! Proceeds will
benefit the Burn Association’s programs and services.
Founded by firefighters in 1987, and celebrating more than 28 years of service to the
community, the Burn Association is the local 501(c) (3) nonprofit agency dedicated to reducing
burn injuries and deaths in Western New York and the Finger Lakes Region. Donations and
corporate sponsorships enable FLRBA to fund vital burn research and treatment, educate
thousands of children and adults each year about fire and burn prevention, provide support
services for young adult and adult burn survivors, and conduct FLRBA’s annual Children’s
Camp Courage for children recovering from severe burn injuries.
The Gateway to Healing event will take place at Paley Studios. The event will highlight Albert
and Frances Paley’s work and creative process and include a silent and live auction. Paley
Studios Ltd. is contributing art pieces to the auction along with many other regional artists. The
auction will also include jewelry, special weekend getaway packages, baskets of wines and other
donated gift items. Jazz artist Dave Mancini (former drummer for Doc Severinsen, Maynard
Ferguson and Chuck Mangione) will perform with his trio. The event will also feature food by
Tasteful Connections, wine, beer and a custom cocktail.
Tickets for emergency service personnel are $75 per person and $125 per couple and can be
obtained on the website at: www.flrba.com or by contacting the Finger Lakes Regional Burn
Association at 585-414-2922.
