QUILTED BEACH BAG
Finished size: approx. 18-‐1/2” wide x 16” high Fabric Requirements: Outer fabric: 2 rectangles, 20” x 22” (5/8 yd) Lining fabric: 2 rectangles, 21” x 23” (2/3 yd) + 1/8 yd if doing covered seams Pocket: 2 rectangles, 11” x 9” (1 fat quarter) Batting: Soft and Stable, 2 rectangles, 21” x 23” Bias Binding: 12” x 12” square Fold each rectangle in half lengthwise and mark the center; open flat. Lay one lining and one outer piece right sides together, matching lengthwise centers and centering the outer piece between the top and bottom of the lining piece. Pin these pieces together. Repeat with other rectangle pair. Lay the wine bag template on top of one of the rectangle pairs (with the outer piece on top), matching center lines and positioning the top of the template about 1/2” below the top of the outer fabric rectangle. Trace the handle oval on the wrong side of the outer fabric piece. Repeat with the other rectangle pair. Do not trace the top of the handle at this point. . Repeat this tracing on the batting pieces, with the top of the template about ¾” from the top. Cut out the oval on the batting pieces along the traced line. Sew the pin-‐basted rectangles together on the traced oval handle line. Cut out the inside of the oval leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Clip the inside curves. With the outer side on the top, remove the pins, lay a piece of batting on top and align the ovals. Reach through the hole and grab the lining fabric from the other side and pull it through the hole. You will need to gently tug at it and pull it into shape so that it lays flat around the opening. You can then iron with steam to get both sides to lay flat. Repeat for the other rectangle pair. With the outer side up, top stitch around the oval handle about 1/8” from the edge. Quilt each piece as desired. After quilting, lay the oval handle template on each rectangle, matching the holes, and trace the top of the handle. Cut each piece along the traced handle line. 21” 21” Square up each piece to the following measurements: 19” wide, 21” long from the side of the cut handle to the bottom. 19”
Adding outside pocket: Lay the two 11” x 9” pocket rectangles right sides together and pin. Stitch around 3 sides of the pocket using 1/4” seam. Clip across corners to reduce bulk taking care not to clip through the stitching. Turn right side out and press. Top stitch along the stitched long edge of pocket approximately 1/8” from edge, and then another line of stitching 1/8” from the first line of stitching. the pocket. Mark a line on the front of the bag approximately 10-‐1/2” below the oval handle opening. Lay raw (unstitched) edge of pocket on this line, top of pocket is facing down; raw edge of pocket is facing toward top of bag, and stitch ¼” from raw edge of pocket. Fold pocket up toward top of bag and press. Top stitch pocket to bag on the two sides and bottom of pocket approximately 1/8” from edge. To reinforce top of pocket, start stitching about ¼” above top of pocket and backstitching, continue stitching down that side, across the bottom and then up the other side, ending by stitching beyond the pocket about ¼” and backstitching. Pocket is complete. Before stitching the two bag pieces together it is recommended that you zigzag or serge the side and bottom edges of each piece. This will give a finished edge and prevent raveling, or you can follow the instructions for the alternate method to finish the seams. Put the two rectangles right sides together, matching the ovals and side and bottom edges, and sew the sides and bottom using a ¼” seam allowance. Start and stop each seam by backstitching a few stitches. Once this is sewn you will create the box bottom. To create the box bottom, trace a 3” square at both corners of the bottom. Cut out along the traced line through all layers of fabric. Pinch the side and bottom seams together, “nesting” the seams by pushing the seam allowance of the side seam one way and the bottom seam the other way. Sew with a ¼” seam, backstitching a few stitches at the beginning and end to reinforce the seams. Finish the edge with a zigzag stitch. Repeat for the other side. Turn piece right side out. Attach bias binding to top of handle using your favorite method. Pattern Courtesy of Old Town Quilt Shop l www.OldTownQuiltShopOrcutt.com 165A W. Alternate method to finish seams: From additional 1/8 yd of fabric cut 2 strips width of fabric 1-‐1/4” wide. Fold strip in half lengthwise and press. Fold one edge to center and press. This will be the binding to cover the raw edge of the bag seams. Put the two rectangles right sides together, matching the ovals, side and bottom edges. Right side down, place the unfolded 1-‐1/4” strip on top of one of the side seams, matching all raw edges. Stitch using a ¼” seam through all layers (it might be useful to use a walking foot at this point). Fold the 1-‐1/4” strip over the seam allowance to the other side to encase the seam. Stitch this seam binding in place on the folded edge of the strip approximately 1/8” from the folded edge. Repeat for the other seam and bottom edge of bag. Cut off any excess binding at the top and bottom edges and create the box bottom as detailed above. Once the box bottom seams have been sewn they can then be encased with binding in the same manner with one change. Turn the edges under on both ends of the binding strip and stitch it on over the box bottom seams. This will leave a finished edge.
