Name:______________________ PreCalculus Journaling/Writing Assignment Ripped Math Tables There are several goals to this activity: 1) Use journaling to create a real-time record of your problem solving process. 2) Think creatively in solving a problem. 3) Participate in an activity where completion takes precedence over deadlines. 4) Develop a research paper from your journals. 5) Extend an extremely familiar branch of math into unfamiliar territory. 6) Work collaboratively with your peers. The engine that is going to drive this process appears on the pages following these instructions. These pages obviously came from a book of some sort. And they obviously have something to do with math. I have not made the problem impossible for you to complete. You need to figure out what information these scraps of paper are trying to convey. Most importantly, you need to document your entire process in approaching this task. a) What questions are you asking? b) What are the answers to those questions? c) Who is helping you? d) How are they helping you? •Your primary goal is to have a pencil and paper out while you are doing this activity. You need to document, in writing, as much as possible of your thought process and communications in solving this puzzle. My main point of assessment will be judging how completely you have captured in writing your process. •When you have deciphered the information on all of the scraps of paper, the task will switch to writing a report. The goal of the report will be to clean up and present your journals in a way that effectively communicates your process and solutions without getting bogged down in every little detail. •You will need to think creatively and communicate with your peers effectively on this project. •We have enough room in the syllabus that we can take enough time to do this right. I want you to work quickly and with intensity. But the emphasis is on doing a good job.
