Snake Alley Criterium
Get ready for great cycling action in downtown
Burlington at the 33rd annual Snake Alley Criterium on Memorial Day weekend. The excitement
begins with the Burlington Road Races, finishing in the 300 block of N. Main in the evening on
Friday, May 22. Afterwards, join in the fun with
live music and refreshments during Friday Fest
at the Port of Burlington.
The Criterium races begin at 8:30 a.m. downtown on Saturday, May 23, as hundreds of
athletes from around the country compete for
thousands of dollars in prizes. The popular kids’
races and Cobble Climb take place at noon, and
the final Category 1/2/Pro race begins at 4 p.m.
Spend your day cheering on the racers as they
make their way up Snake Alley, with spectators
literally in the middle of the action.

is called “one of the most physically challenging

Want some hot and sticky
summer reading? Try “Ninety-Two in the Shade” or any
book by Thomas McGuane.
He’s at home writing a roughand-tumble Montana cowboy
tale, or a Key West, sail-to-Cuba story. Writers write about
what they know. McGuane is
as knowledgeable about shoeing a horse or building fence
as he is sailing a sloop and
navigating by the stars.
Keep the dictionary handy,
or make it easy on yourself
by ordering up any of McGuane’s numerous books on
a digital reader or Kindle.
With the Kindle, all one has
to do to decipher the meaning
of a word is move the cursor to the word. Voila, the
internal Oxford American
Dictionary obliges. And with
McGuane, for me, there was a
lot of looking up, i.e., read-
ing McGuane is a learning
experience, or what is popularly called
empty nesT a “teachable
moment.”
Perhaps
more enjoyable for men
readers, McGuane tends
to be sort of
a misogynist
in the old
HemingCurt Swarm
way style,
but as with
Hemingway, it’s his prose
that carries the day. Unlike
Hemingway, however, McGuane can often get carried
away in extra long sentences
that leave you wondering,
and going back to the beginning several times to figure
out what’s going on. But
the effort is worth it. “They
threaded the keys amid this
aerial display over uncounted
fish coursing the tidal basin,
over a bottom itself home to a
million kinds of animal, that
walked, stalked, and scuttled
by every tropism from heat to
light, and lived in intermeshing layers, layer upon layer,
that passed through each
other like light and never
touched.”
If I were in a college literature class, and we were
reading “Ninety-Two in the
Shade”, I would ask for an
explanation as to why, in the
beginning of the book, McGuane weaves in and out of
italics print in the middle of
sentences. My interpretation
is that the protagonist, Skelton, is weaving in and out of
reality. It’s quite an unusual
technique, but McGuane is
no ordinary writer. When I
finished “Ninety-Two in the
Shade”, I went right back to
the beginning and started
over, as I did with several of
his short stories.
Other McGuane books
available through Amazon
are “Gallatin Canyon”, “The
Longest Silence: A Life in
Fishing”, “The Sporting
Club”, and “Crow Fair Stories”, but there are a whole
slew of others, both fiction
and non-fiction. Many of his
short stores, although superbly written, left me dangling,
and wishing he had written
more. From “Gallatin Canyon”:

repetitious anyway, without quite realizing that the
source of despair’s enduring
power was that it was always
brand-spanking new.”
