In the outer circles, give examples from the book that supports Opal’s comment. Proof Proof Miss Franny thought Winn-Dixie was a bear, so Miss Franny became friendly with Opal and told her the "bear story." Winn-Dixie needed a leash and collar, so Opal got a summer job to pay for them at Gertrude's Pets. Just about everything that happened to me that summer happened because of Winn-Dixie. Proof Proof Sweetie Pie saw WinnDixie chasing the mouse at the Open Arms Baptist Church, so she invited Opal to her birthday party. Winn-Dixie ran into Gloria Dump's jungle of a yard. When Opal went in to find him, she met Gloria Dump. They became friends. The test uses litmus paper. Litmus paper is covered in a powder made from certain lichens. The paper is dipped into a mixture. If the paper turns red, the solution is acidic. If the paper turns blue, the solution is alkaline. Name what each character felt when s/he ate a Littmus Lozenge. Explain why the author of Because of Winn-Dixie, Kate DiCamill, named this candy the Littmus Lozenge. A lozenge is a soothing type of medication. This candy soothes people’s emotions. Amanda her younger brother's drowning Otis a need to share music The Dewberry Brothers a need for friends The Preacher #2 Why name the candy Littmus Lozenge? a missing wife The Littmus Lozenge is a combination of both sadness and sweet which are polar opposites just as litmus paper tests for opposites (acidic or alkaline). Miss Franny a need for love and acceptance #3 Explain the similarities and differences? Solutions which are high in acid include lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. These are sour (similar to the sadness in the Littmus Lozenge). It’s kind of like making lemonade, by adding sugar to the lemons, you have a real treat.
