NATIONAL JUNIOR TRIALS – COUNTY PLAYERS INVOLVED
BOWLS ENGLAND holds its Junior International Trials on Monday, 25th May, 2015, and County players are
involved. They will be held at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa from 10.0 a.m.
Women:
Katie Smith, Desborough Town BC, who has moved to this County from Leicestershire, and Chloe
Wordingham, Higham Ferrers Town BC, have been selected to play, and Jasmin Spear,
Kingsthorpe BC has been selected as a travelling reserve.
Men:
Jamie Walker, Northampton West End BC, Callum Height, Thrapston BC & Connor Cinato,
Kettering Midland Band BC have all been selected to play.
We wish them the best of bowling on the day and hope that they catch the selectors’ eyes for the season’s International
Series to be held later in the year.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEN ‘MIDLAND COUNTIES’ versus DERBYSHIRE
The men of Jackson Grundy sponsored Bowls Northamptonshire made the journey to Long Eaton Town BC, on
Saturday, 16th May, 2015, for the first of the County’s competitive matches in the Midland Counties Championship
and their opponents on a bright, albeit a little cool, afternoon, were Derbyshire. Despite a bit of a mixed start, when
after 5 ends Derbyshire had a 2 shots lead across the board, the County men really got to grips with what appeared to
be a very tricky surface, and they secured a very impressive win by 32 shots.
This margin of victory could not be forecast after 15 ends of play, for the County had a slender lead of 7 shots, but
over the last quarter of the match Vernon’s men really pressed the accelerator to dominate the remainder of the match,
and one of the losing rinks even picked up a score of 7 shots on its last end to aid the cause. . The result was 4 very
good winning rinks for Northamptonshire, with the highest scoring one being that skipped by Team Manager Vernon
Gearey, which had a 14 shots advantage, but mention should be made of the other 3 winning rinks, each of which
picked up wins by 11 shots, skipped by Jamie Walker, Darren Childs & Roger Tansley..
The final score was Northamptonshire 136 shots (18 points) – Derbyshire 104 shots (4 points). Rink scores,

On a warm and bright afternoon the men of Northamptonshire Vice Presidents Bowling Association paid a visit to
Spalding BC, Lincolnshire, on Wednesday, 13th May, 2015, to play that County’s VP’s, and on as good a green as
most of the visitors had ever seen, the match was very keenly fought. The County took the match by just 6 shots, with
3 winning rinks, 2 drawn rinks and just 1 losing, and the highest scoring rink was that skipped by the VP’s Chairman,
Colin Incles, which had a 12 shots advantage.

The ladies of Jackson Grundy Bowls Northamptonshire took a trip to Wolvey BC, on Tuesday, 12th May, 2015, to
play Warwickshire in the Middle England League, and, despite having 2 good winning rinks, the 4 losing did so by
sufficient shots to lose the match by 22 shots. The highest scoring rink for the County was that skipped by Brenda
Bishop with a 12 shots advantage, with the other winning rink skipped by Jeannie Flippance taking a 4 shots win.
Final score was Northamptonshire 120 shots (4 points) – Warwickshire 142 shots (13 points). Rink scores,

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE BOWLS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SCHEME COMPETITIONS
Players under the age of 18 years are invited to enter the outdoor competitions being organised by Northamptonshire
Bowls Youth Development Scheme for clubs affiliated in the County. Entry forms have been sent to all the County’s
clubs, and there are three separate competitions, they being Under 15 Singles, 15-18 years Singles, and Under 18 Pairs
.
All competitions are open to both genders, and the relevant age restriction is dependent upon the players age on the 1 st
May, 2015.
The Pairs has a requirement that the joint aged of the two players does not exceed 33 years.
The Finals will be played in conjunction with the men’s and mixed County Finals at Irchester BC on Sunday, 31 st
August, 2015.
Closing date for entries is Sunday, 31st May, 2015.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEN ‘FRIENDLY’ versus OXFORDSHIRE – RESULT
The men of Jackson Grundy sponsored Bowls Northamptonshire took a trip to Bicester BC on Tuesday, 12 th May,
2015, for a ‘Friendly’ match against Oxfordshire, hoping to avenge the defeat inflicted by that County on the previous
Saturday in the ‘Middleton Cup’ practice match.
It was not to be, however, for, although the rink wins were shared, the win went to the home county by 18 shots, very
much due to the lambasting given to one of the County’s rinks, skipped by yours truly!
The highest scoring County rink was that skipped by Paul Green with an advantage of 18 shots.

CEREBRAL PALSY SPORT – ‘BOWLSTART’ DAY IN COUNTY
A ‘Bowlstart Taster Day’ has been arranged by Cerebral Palsy Sport, in connection with the ‘Hotspot’ status of
Northamptonshire, and under the auspices of the Bowls Development Alliance, and this will take place at Desborough
Indoor Bowling Club, rear of 35, High Street, Desborough, NN14 2NB, on Sunday, 14th June, 2015, from 2.0 p.m. to
4.0 p.m.
This new opportunity will be open to players of all ability levels with Cerebral Palsy and other physical
disabilities, either as a first step into Bowls or an additional playing opportunity. This opportunity is being
developed in partnership with Northamptonshire Sport and the Bowls Development Alliance. The aim is to
get more players with Cerebral Palsy and other physical disabilities enjoying the game, and this event is a
great opportunity to give it a try.
The 2 hour event will focus on providing fun skills based activities designed to engage participants and
develop the skills used in playing Bowls. This will then hopefully lead on to the participant taking part in a
regular Bowls session held at a local club and from there into the club’s membership programme if they so

The ladies of the Women’s Section of Jackson Grundy sponsored Bowls Northamptonshire entertained their
opposite numbers from Cambridgeshire to a ‘Middle England League’ match on Thursday, 14 th May, 2015, at Roade
BC, and in appalling conditions of wind and rain, the two counties had a very tight match, which went to the visitors
by just 1 shot. The County actually won on more rinks than Cambridgeshire, taking 4 wins to 2 losses, with the
highest scoring rink being that skipped by Val Betts which had a 13 shots advantage.
The final score was Northamptonshire 110 shots (8 points) – Cambridgeshire 111 shots (9 points). Rink scores,

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE UNDER 25’S DOUBLE RINK ‘WHITE ROSE TROPHY’
The match between the Men’s Under 25’s of Jackson Grundy sponsored Bowls Northamptonshire, in the Inter
County ‘White Rose Trophy’ competition, has been cancelled, as the County’s opponents, Suffolk, have conceded the
tie on being unable to raise a team.
The match was scheduled for Sunday, 17 th May, 2015, at Wellingborough, but the concession now leads to the
County’s young players having to wait for the Regional Finals to have a ‘work out’ and these are being held on
Sunday, 14th June, 2015, at a venue to be confirmed.

Semi-Finals:

Margaret Taylor, Wilma Walker & Eleanor Winters, Corby Forest BC 28-15 shots. This was a match in which
initially the St Crispin rink went ahead 9-1 after 5 ends, but the Corby Forest rink struck back and after 11 ends of play
the scores were very close at 11-10 to St Crispin. From this point on, however, St Crispin ‘steamed’ ahead to be
leading 25-10 shots after 18 ends of play, and the Forest quartet looked beaten.
Strange things happen in bowls, sometimes, and in the next end the Forest rink picked up a count of 5 shots to give
them just an outside chance in the match, but in the 20th end the St Crispin rink collected 3 shots to win and thus
qualify for the National Championships at Royal Leamington Spa later in the season.
The other Semi-Final has been arranged to be played at Thrapston BC on the evening of Wednesday, 20th May, 2015,
between the Higham Ferrers rink and the Desborough Town rink.

Approval for the Wearing of Shorts
Bowls England is delighted to announce approved shorts that may be worn in National Competitions and National
Championships (including county qualifying rounds) as well as other club and county events are now on sale. The
new white shorts have been introduced to meet demand from players who wished to replicate the more sporty style
favoured by many bowls players during the 2014 Commonwealth Games. They are available in a variety of sizes from
XS (28” waist) up to 4XL (46” waist) and feature an elasticated waist, zipped pockets and the Bowls England logo on
the left leg.
Tony Allcock MBE, Bowls England Chief Executive, said: “There was clear demand from members to allow shorts to
be worn and we are delighted to have been able to source these shorts for our members to wear in events under our
jurisdiction. However, we must stress that only shorts bearing the Bowls England logo will be allowed at our events.
Subject to demand, we will continue to source other merchandise to make the sport more attractive to both this and
future generations.”
-9Additional colours and styles of shorts will be available later this season. Whilst there is no condition in Bowls
England events that all members of a team or side must wear shorts, it is a requirement that the colour worn below the
waist is matching. The dress code for all other activities that players participate in, for example club friendly matches
and leagues, is a matter for the relevant organising body to determine. The shorts can be purchased from the Bowls
England website at www.bowlsengland.com or by calling the Bowls England Office on 01926 334609 for £24.99 plus
post and packing.

Coaching Courses
A number of places are available on some upcoming Level 2 Coach Bowls Courses organised in conjunction with the
Bowls Development Alliance and Sport Structures.
The qualifications are delivered in partnership with 1 st 4 Sport Qualifications (Awarding Body) and gives an externally
accredited Nationally recognised qualification (regulated by Ofqual). It is also the only Nationally Recognised
Qualification for the sport of Bowls in England and is wholly supported by Bowls England and EIBA Ltd.
The Level 2 qualification will support coaches to effectively PLAN and DELIVER series of structured sessions to
bowlers from beginner stages through to competitive club players. It puts the bowler at the centre of all developments
and concentrates not just on what to coach but on how to get the best from the people you are working with.
The course takes 5 days to complete in total followed by the completion of a portfolio and an assessment and costs
£220. Bursaries for coaches from Bowls England and EIBA Ltd affiliated clubs are available.

BOWLS DEVELOPMENT ALLIANCE
‘Hot Spot’ Packages
The Bowls Development Alliance has received a number of package applications from clubs within ‘Hot Spots’
whose delivery has already begun in the form of Play Bowls Days or Play Bowls 4 Fun sessions. To clarify, the BDA
does not fund any activity retrospectively and all package applications should be submitted to the BDA Office with a
minimum of 14 days’ notice in order for the appropriate checks to be made and necessary paperwork sent to the club
contacts. The paperwork is of particular importance, as without it there is a risk that the events will not be monitored
correctly and, as such, the new participants recruited at those events will not be declared. This is a situation which
everyone should want to avoid.
On this occasion, the applications concerned will be approved (where they meet the application criteria) but the BDA
asks that it is stressed to all clubs considering applications to make them in good time as any future applications
involving activity that has already begun will be rejected. It is also stressed that any applications made are exactly that,
applications, and as such no delivery should commence which is reliant on package funding until the applications have
been approved.

Walter Stanners, Corby Seagrave House
Walter, who died a few days ago, was a very long serving member of Corby Seagrave House BC, formerly Stewarts &
Lloyds.
His funeral is arranged to take place at Kettering Crematorium at 12.45 p.m. on Tuesday, 19 th May, 2015.
