The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. In this keynote presentation, Brian R. King,
LCSW, and an adult with Asperger’s, ADHD and Dyslexia, who is also raising three sons with Asperger’s
and ADHD, will tell you his story as a man and a father. A story of 10 key steps that he discovered
are critical to living a fulfilling life on the autism spectrum.

This panel consists of individuals with ASD as well as siblings of individuals with ASD. Panelists will describe their
successes and challenges living with autism. Siblings will describe opportunities for supporting their siblings and for
enhancing such a relationship. Listen to the unique experiences of these individuals affected by ASD.

information on how to organize an effective
family support group and address some
challenges and strategies for maintaining
and growing them. A unique group, the
Parent to Parent Support Program, will be
highlighted. Come share your experiences
with us, both good and bad, as we
discuss this important topic.
Educators and school staff will gain
a deeper understanding of problem

About the Presenters
Allison D. Curnock, B. S., is a first-year student in the Specialist in School Psychology graduate program at Illinois State University.
During her undergraduate training at Illinois State University, she served as a research assistant at The Autism Program, Illinois State
University site and on a social-emotional learning curriculum project in local schools. She currently serves as a graduate assistant at
The Autism Program, Illinois State University site.
Karla J. Doepke, Ph.D., is an associate professor of psychology and member of the school psychology program faculty at Illinois
State University. She is director of The Autism Program, Illinois State University site. Dr. Doepke completed her Ph.D. in child clinical
psychology at West Virginia University. Her research examines the assessment and treatment of children with autism.

Jose Luis Ovalle works to empower and represent families in the community and is the father of identical adult males with
autism. Also, he is a member of the advisory board of Grupo SALTO, a support group for families who have children with ASD and
whose principle language is Spanish. Mr. Ovalle is an AUCD-LEND 2009-2010 graduate in the family discipline and a member of the
AUCD Act Early Illinois chapter. Additionally, he served an active role in Advancing Futures for Adults with Autism (AFAA). Mr.
Ovalle is an executive board member for the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities (ICDD).
Susan L. Powell, B.S., is a job training coach for Unit Five schools in Central IL. She served as a kindergarten teacher for many
years before assuming this role. She currently supervises adolescents/emerging adults in job training through the school district,
including several individuals gaining job skills at The Autism Program, Illinois State University site.
