SHORT SYNOPSIS
A failed dancer intends to take her life on a secluded drawbridge. Her plans are interrupted when she lands in the home of a mysterious vagrant and has to face the
question, was it fate or misfortune?
SYNOPSIS
Bridge is a pitch black comedy that examines fate and failure. An aging dancer at
the end of her rope decides to cut her time short, but her plans are disrupted by a
disturbing turn of events. A strange vagrant and a mysterious photograph bring her
face-to-face with her choices.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
A man who has nothing becomes God-like, controlling fate, and creating his own version of purgatory.
I used the metaphor of a drawbridge to physically manifest the moment when a person is balancing
between life and death. When the bridge is up it forces a new perspective and represents detachment
from reality. As it descends back into place we return to where we left off, only this time with a second chance. The victim leaves believing that everything happens for a reason. Destiny brought them
to this place, and there must be something else to live for. I wanted to create something so heartfelt
that you almost miss the absurdity of a bum conning someone out of suicide.

FILM NOTES
T HE M A N IN T HE DR AW BR IDGE
Bridge is inspired by the true story of a man who
lived for three years inside the girders of a Chicago
River drawbridge. Although to our knowledge, he
never encountered any attempted suicides.

SHOO T ING ‘ INS IDE T HE BR IDGE ’
To capture the movement of a drawbridge, we constructed the set in a woodshop large enough to flip
an entire room on its side. The set was attached to
large hinges and rigged with pulleys that could be
operated by a team of eight burly men. A custom
handcrafted rig was attached to the crossbeams of
the set in order to keep the camera in one positon
during the rotations.

The production design was hinged on creating a set
that answered the challenges of living in a home
that would suddenly shift orientation. Where we
couldn’ t bolt objects down, we rigged surfaces and
lighting to swing from one position to the other. We
focused on creating a space that would be functional, comfortable and efficient using only found
objects.
F INDING T HE C AS T
Our lead actress, Danielle Slavick has been a longAN ALARM SOUNDS
time collaborator, and we knew she could capture
the role. Dwyer met Brian Mendes, the vagrant, after going to see Danielle in an Adam Rapp play,
‘Through the Yellow Hour.’ His performance and
manner during the Q and A after the show prompted Dwyer to ask him to take the role.v
