Local Virginia artist Michelle Haley has poured her imagination

canvas would certainly cheer-up any room with a monotone

#103: Soapstone Plate from Kenya
Kenyan soapstone, also known as Kisii stone, comes from the
western highlands of Kenya where over centuries the Kisii
people used to make pots and other practical tools. Today,
skilled artists paint and carve the stone into beautiful,
decorative pieces. They start with a large block of stone, carve it
into the desired shape, polish it, dye it and incise a design into
it, all by hand! There is no room for error as the artist carefully
carves the design into the piece. This beautiful, hand-carved
16” soapstone plate would look great on a table or on the
wall. It should be used for decorative purpose only.

#104: Camel Koor “Neck Bell” from Somalia
The Somali Nomadic lifestyle of camel herders and pastoralists
is what defines the Somali culture. Koor is the Somali term for
the wooden bell that adorns the most prized camel in the herd
so the nomads can keep track of the grazing herd by the sound
of the bell. This traditional artifact hand-carved from wood and
string will bring you images of camels wandering along dry
plateaus, sandy valleys and watering holes.
